I wish some people would think before they talk while at WDW

There is no more Anti-Canadian Sentiment in the U.S. than there is Anti-American sentiment in Canada. I hear it all the time when I am there. Why am I there? Because my In-laws are Canadian and my DH was Canadian, he is now a naturalized U.S. citizen.

I'm sure your 10yr old son has heard FAR worse on his bus-ride to school. Again, you cannot force people to act the way that you want them to, so why try? I worry more how I bring my kids up, and hope that they react accordingly when anything off-color is said.

The world would be much better if people would worry about themselves rather than what everyone else is doing and saying.

I'm not sure I get your whole drift. I am "worrying" about myself and my son! I ignored the guy but I sure as heck wasn't going to ignore my son's question. And I wanted him to hear my thoughts on this so that he could react accordingly in the future if he heard it again. What am I supposed to say to my kid when he asks the question? Oh, nothing, honey, just don't worry about it, worry about yourself. I kept my answer to him brief, told him I thought that attitude was not right and that was the end of it. I guess I don't see where my answering my son's question is somehow forcing this guy to act the way I want him to.

And you are right. My son has heard and seen far worse. Like when some kid put a photocopy of a bunch of dead Jewish people at a concentration camp during WWII in my son's best friends desk. Underneath the picture some kid had written "Jews having a sleepover". That happened before the incident at WDW so my son certainly had his radar up.

While you are apparently being sarcastic, I DO love that. I think walking away without a confrontation during your vacation and then discussing it later is absolutely the smartest thing. Letting things roll off your back doesn't mean you don't at some point want to discuss them. I think that's exactly the kind of things community boards are made for.

My comment wasn't meant directly for you.........except for the school-bus comment. You're right, it is up to you to choose or not choose to explain to YOUR son. That is why he is YOUR son.

Its one thing to post a thread as "listen to what I heard while on vacation".............it is a completely different issue when you start putting morality, racial accusations, and 'hate crimes' (my favorite in this thread) into it.

Again, some people act as if they do NO wrong.......I'd love to have a tape recorder w/them all day to see their 'true' selves.

Oh yeah, I agree with you on both those points! When I first responded to this thread last night, it was on the Theme Parks Attractions/Strategies board. I remember thinking, I should let this one go and stick to my trip planning, this will only get out of hand and crazy! Have a great day.

If you sit in a queue and start listening to people you hear all kinds of rude comments including terrible things about Americans said by people from other countries. In fact it's hard to keep a striaght face and ignore sometimes, but we always do it. Last thing I want to do on my vacation is get into it with some stranger about how they feel about American eating habits or clothing.

A hate crime? I think you need more than just 'words' to convict a hate crime.........I think the original post just made some reference to someone saying something about foreingers being at the park----I didn't see anything racially-specific in the original post?

I think some of you are being overly-dramatic.........if you are honestly offended, then just walk away. The world is not perfect, and none of us here will ever make it that way.

I have read the OP a few times, and I can see how someone may be offended by what the stranger said, but what if it was just an observation? I mean, I myself am amazed at how many foreigners choose WDW as a vacation destination. Maybe that is what the stranger meant. That people come from ALL OVER THE WORLD to vacation in Orlando Florida.

So, I agree, too many people on this thread are too quick to assume it was negative comment, when even the OP admitted that they weren't sure what he meant.

I guess it depends on the tone the person used when they said it, but just reading the words, I don't see any type of insult or ignorance. I know that one time when we were at WDW, I noticed that there were a lot more British people than we usually see, and I did make a remark in observation to my DH. I don't have anything at all against British people, it was just unusual that it seemed like everyone we heard had a British accent. If one would have said "Well, I'm British" I would have asked if this was a common time of year to take vacation in the UK.

As far as the use of "God" in the sentence, s lot of people use the word "God" just as another way to say "wow". (I don't use, and don't allow my son to use, "God" as an expression, but it doesn't offend me to hear someone else use it that way. I think sometimes people just look for things to be offended by.)

Wow I really need to watch it. When we came back from Orlando last year we kept talking about all of the foreigners that were there. I didn't mean it in a derogatory way. I guess it just amazes us that so many choose Orlando as their vacation spot. We've told friends funny stories about all of the European men we ran into wearing speedos, how sometimes we almost felt we were in some sort of hybrid country. It was really fascinating and when I've said man (could insert God,wow etc.) there were alot of foreigners especially Europeans while we were there I'm NOT being racist.

A co-worker of mine gave a talk a UT-Austin one time. He told (clean) Aggie jokes as openers because he thought it was appropriate since he was in the Longhorn territory. Little did he realize it was a statewide professional meeting that including people from A&M. Now that will get a real fight going on!

Seriously I understand what the OP was saying and it sounds like (I may be wrong) she was directly addressed by this man. That was the problem. My country dad used to make comments in public that would make me cringe so I'm probably overly sensitive to that kind of thing. Heck I get uncomfortable if my DH talks (he's loud) about his political views when we're in the wrong county. Again just me. One thing I do appreciate is that people like the OP do post when they get home, and the board has, for the most part, respectful discussions about the subject. Let's me see things from both sides I don't normally get to see in my little town.

I guess I need to stick to reading and not posting because this board seems to be getting way to Liberal for me. But still has good points or tips for when we go to Disney.

I believe only those that are in, or have family serving in the military will understand me. I clap my hands to the individual how has become naturalized.

As far as being from this country"HECK YEAH" I might not type like a professionial or someone who has a degree in english but apparently you understood what I was saying. Individuals like you, that think they are better than the next person are ones that truly make me sick. So what your income might be 6 digits or have a stay at home parent but that dont make you better. I was considering on getting some green ribbon to wear ans show Dis pride but if I might run into you or people similiar to you then thats not going to happen.

Anyways I love the fact I fight to defend rights like these, the right to not get along and to speak my mind. If anyone truly thinks that eventually everyone will get along they are wrong, people will only tolerate each other for the brief time they are together.

I live in Austin, but I did not go to UT or A&M, nor am I a fan of either team, but I must tell you that Aggies have the WORST sense of humor! They get offended by everything! I am now prepared for the onslaught of Aggie hate mail!

Unless someone is speaking directly to me or my family I don't let it bother me. Yes, I wouild like to ask them why they have that opinion but everyone has a right to say what they wish to say. Lets face it, we can't even get along with our neighbors half the time because of our "opinions" right? People from other parts of the world certainly have their opinions and usually don't hesitate to make them known but you have to remember that things are different where they come from...some better, some worse. If we could get along just while we are at DW it would definately be a start in the right direction. So,next time you hear something you don't like...either do something about it or let it go!

You should feel very good about yourself....

Before attacking grammar, you should strive to make sure your own is rock solid. For instance, I think you might have meant "Those were exactly my thoughts", or "That was exactly my thought", not "That were exactly my thoughts"....

Also, what is the relationship between patriotism and grammar? I don't think there is one.....
