DD came downstairs this morning with head cold symptoms - stuffy nose and sore throat. She was moving slow but no fever. She had two major tests today and a final review for a big exam tomorrow. She knew she wasn't feeling great but didn't want to miss these. Asked me to make the call whether or not to stay home. I told her that, without a fever, she should go. We treated the symptoms and off she went. Just got a call from the school - her French teacher took one look at her and told her to go home! Sent her to the office to call me. So now, she's home and tells me that her homeroom teacher told her she looked terrible and that she had to explain to her French teacher why she was even there. (out of concern - the teacher is really nice) But I feel terrible.................how could everybody else have seen it but me??? (We should have a bad mom icon to insert here :guilty: )

Editted to add: I think I feel so bad because DD says she was 'sooooo embarassed' when the teacher asked her to go to the office. You know how sensitive 13 year olds are !!!

I swear, this is a damned if you do, damned if you don't issue. I know our school's policy is to stay home with fever, diarrhea, or contagious rashes. Other than that I guess it's up to parent. It's so hard when missing that day means your daughter will be behind. I hope you both feel better soon.

Don't feel bad, I think we've all been there! It's always so hard to tell which way to go.

Agreed..Try not to beat yourself up over it. I have been guilty of this also. We try to do what is right for our children, no harm in that. Perhaps she got worse. You did the right thing...:)

Under those circumstances, I'd have sent my son, too. It's a hard call to make, but sometimes when they feel bad in the morning, once they wake up a little it goes away. You're not a bad mom. Don't let it get to you.

Hope y'all feel better soon!

been dealing with something similar: week or so ago DD came home from nurses office in the middle of the day - first time for her(I had also sent her in due to a major test). Now that she personally realizes it is an option - she wants to excercise that option. Nurse called yesterday....I explained dilemma to nurse, knew DD was feeling a little stomach thing but no fever or anything horrible, ended up leaving it up to the nurse. She had DD lay down for 10-15 mins then go back to class...fast forward to 4 o'clock and DD wants to go sledding with friends - miraculous recovery!!!!

So, she tried to pull the "my stomach doesn't feel good today" .....everyone at school yesterday was covinced today would be a snow day, but it didn't turn out that way, so she was disappointed.....I sent her in - and no call from nurse yet!!!

sometimes it is so hard to make the call....:) I think you did the best you could!!!!

Don't feel bad, it happens to everyone. Earlier this year my kindergartener threw up around 6:00 am but seemed fine after that. He ate breakfast and said he felt okay, so I sent him off to school (you know where this is going, right). Yep, about 9:00 I get the call that he just threw up in his classroom. I went and picked him up, but he was absolutely fine the rest of the day. :confused3

I would have done (and have done) the same thing. You couldn't know in advance how she would feel as the day progressed.

Like a PP, our schools' policy is that you must keep them home with a temp over a certain level, or with vomiting or diarrhea. But it's hard to know where to draw the line beyond that. Does this mean that they're EXPECTED to be in school if they have a 99 temp and no vomiting or diarrhea? I keep them home with any temp, and hope I'm not violating something!

Don't beat yourself up. Sometimes they look borderline and rapidly decline and other times they perk up. It has happened to lots of moms and everyone just tries to do their best. My daughter had her coat on this am ready to get in the car when she told me her stomach hurt and she can't make it to school. She is sleeping right now so she really doesn't feel good. I thought she looked ok and if she didn't say anything I would have brought her to school. It happens. Hope yours and mine both get better quick.:wizard:

:grouphug: Sometimes stuff just happens-I think even adults sometimes *think* they'll be ok, but they're not.

Sometimes it can get worse the further away from your bed you get. You saw her when she was fairly well rested. By the time she took a bus ride and walked through the crowded halls, she may have felt totally different - and looked it too.

I have a cold right now. I feel fine in the morning, horrible part way through my work day(5 hours), and fine again in the afternoon after a nap. If I could take a brief nap every three hours, I'd probably be fine - but about 3 hours from my bed, I look/feel horrible!

Don't beat yourself up over it. You did what you thought was the right thing. When mu kids are a little under the weather they usually perk up after they have been up for a while, and make it through the day just fine. I am sure there will be some day when the nurse calls for me to pick one of them up, and complains that I sent them in sick.

We're all just doing the best we can.

Sounds like we've all been there and would have, and have made the same call. There is no guidebook on this, so don't beat yourself up.

Hope your DD is her perky self again soon. :sunny:

We've always been a "suck it up and go" family even if you are sick so I would have made the same call you did. A lot of times, once they get going they feel better.
