I was told by a CM waiter that in Jan they will add 18% to DDE users

bills. He said they are notoriously bad tippers and the union has worked it out for them to get 18% added on automatically. He said there would be a lot of other changes too...but I didn't really ask. Now that I have read on another post that they are taking the tip out of the DDP...in Jan 08...that is weird.

we weren't on the ddp so I didn't ask anything about it. He was having lunch next to us and just chit chatted for a bit about the DDE card and that its a great discount.

just some interesting tid bits...;)

I'm surprised - we always tip 20% on the original bill - I guess not every one does. The 18% will end up saving us money, so it won't be so bad!

You said exactly what I was going to say... I tip on the original bill, not the discounted one. Who knows, it seems like a lot of things will be changing next year. I'll believe it when I see it!:)

I agree. It was alway so easy to just throw the 20% saved back on there as a tip. Woo hoo 2% savings. ;)

We'll see if it really happens though.

I agree here.

Considering all these changes are dependent on union negotions I would not worry about it at this time. Anything could change.

Same here I take the original pre discount amount and add a few bucks to it. So they get a little more then 20% and usually more then that if I'm happy. But I hate places that automatically add the tip and I usually don't add more to brign it up.

We always do 15 - 25% on the original, so it isn't a big deal unless we had very poor service.

My ex served at disney, and I still know several that do. From what they've told me, like 1 in 4 tip a decent amount(close to if not up to the 20% disncount amount) based on the original amount of the check. 2 in 4 tip about 15% of the discounted price. Then, 1 in 4 have the card because they are locals and trying to eat at disney as cheap as possible and tip 50% of the discounted 20%(100 bill, thus a $20 discount, followed by a $10 tip).

Plus I've heard rumors this may be an effort to have people to stop purchasing the cards, as the current system is not what disney originally planned it to be. I've been told it was started as some sort of wine club at the wilderness lodge, and being a member of this, also got you 20% off your meal while enjoying the wine. Then people just started being a member for the 20% discount, and thus how its known now.

That interesting. If they're adding on an automatic 18% gratuity for DDE, that would make me more readily disbelieve the rumor that they're removing the 18% gratuity for the Dining Plan.

Ditto here, too! Based on this limited sampling I don't believe that DDE people are bad tippers. If they go to an automatic 18%, I think the servers will lose money.

I would agree..they go to adding the 18% automatically I think servers would loose money also. I really do not like automatic tip adding. We tip 20% minimum, usually more..if the tip is added automatically I wouldn't worry about it anymore.

Me too. It seems like maybe someone misunderstood what was happening. To me, the automatic addition of an 18% tip to DDE purchases makes much more sense than doing away with the DDP gratuity included.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I have had the Disney Dining Experience card for about 10 years. I don't remember it having anything to do with the Wilderness Lodge. I believe it used to be called the Food and Wine card, and I think at one point they were two separate cards (that was before I had it, so I'm not positive - but a loooong time ago it worked a little differently).

I doubt they are planning to stop it, though it isn't as good a deal anymore for locals as it's harder (with the DDP) to get into restaurants at the last minute.

As far tippers - I don't doubt that there are people who don't tip enough. I don't know anyone like that, though I'd expect that the average person tips on the original amount.

I am not sure I totally agree with having a tip 'forced' upon you. I know about the minimum wage not being applicable to servers but surely the level of service determines a tip, how can you then make it known that service was not good if you are forced to pay 18%? I must say we have rarely tipped less than 15 usually it is about 20%. I also agree about the whole 18% not going to the server, if I pay by CC I still leave a cash tip, just feel better leaving cash rather than adding it onto the CC.

Actually it's the same rumor. Disney wants to remove the included gratuity as part of the dining plan. The union obtained the 18% gratuity for DDE guests as well as lowering the table size for "automatic tip" from 8 or more to 6 or more in exchange. Disney saves on the DDP tip and doesn't give up anything that costs WDW a penny.

20% of the net check is only 16% of the gross check. If the average tip was anything close to 18% this wouldn't be an issue.

So you are saying those who pay a fixed amount don't have to tip yet those on DDE have to tip as it is now included :confused3 What about someone who has no plan or discounts do they have to tip? Also the AP discount do you have the tip included or not?
