I was suspended from Ebay

Thanks! Did you have to provide a copy of your driver's license, or some other official document?

I'd be very leery of sending a copy of my driver's license. The state I used to live in had your social security number on it!! I hope they've changed that!
With identity theft the way it is I just wouldn't chance it. Maybe they'd take a notarized letter stating that the notary saw the license and declares you are who you say you are. Whew!
As far as them telling you they truly are ebay and not a scam, what's to say I'm who I am? I could tell you I'm ebay too. What's to say I'm not if you can't see me?
Just a thought...
good luck!
ann

No, I didn't. They asked me to verify something that I purchased earlier in the year, that only I would know the answer (unless someone really did their homework and tracked my stuff). My item was tickets to Kings Island in Ohio. It was beyond the time that anyone could just look at the items sold or bought and pull up the description.

I sent them copies of the emails I received "from Ebay" to spoof@ebay.com...the email address they provide on their website as the place to send emails "from Ebay" that you're not sure are scams...and they replied to my email to that address saying that yes, they DID in fact send me the emails. At this point, I don't doubt that I AM dealing with Ebay. And again...my account IS suspended, so yes, it was Ebay that has taken these actions.

Our driver's licenses in this state no longer use the social security number...there's a different number on it. They did mention blackening out personal information on some forms of ID, so if I do decide to go ahead and send a copy of my driver's license, I will blacken out the number and see if that's acceptable to them. If not, I have to figure out Plan B.

You might want to read this website.
Yes, I've read TONS of information about Ebay scams in the last couple of days. That's why Ebay set up the email address...spoof@ebay.com...so that members can confirm which emails are scams, and which emails are, in fact, from Ebay. The email I received IS from Ebay.

MaryAnnDVC,
Don't do ANYTHING via email. You should be able to go to Ebay direct and at the bottom go to Security Center/Protecting Your Ebay Account. Live Chat if you need help. Don't send anyone anything via mail and bananiem is right, anyone can say they are someone they aren't. If you go direct through the site though, you will be protected!

Very sorry to hear this action has been taken by eBay.
I find your post very interesting as I received the very same email.
I did not reply, as when I ck'd on 'Snoops' it was a fake.
I forwarded it to eBay and immediately rec'd following reply.

Hello
Thank you for contacting eBay's Trust and Safety Department about email solicitations that are falsely made to appear to have come from eBay. These emails, commonly referred to as "spoof" messages, are sent in an attempt to collect sensitive personal information from recipients who reply to the message or click on a link to a Web page requesting this information.

The email you reported did not originate from, nor is it endorsed by, eBay. We are very concerned about this problem and are working diligently to address the situation. We have investigated the source of this email and have taken appropriate action. You may rest assured that your account standing has not changed and that your listings have not been affected.

We advise you to be very cautious of email messages that ask you to submit information such as your credit card number or your email password. eBay will never ask you for sensitive personal information such as passwords, bank account or credit card numbers, Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), or Social Security numbers in an email itself. If you ever need to provide information to eBay please open a new Web browser, type www.ebay.com, and click on the "site map" link
located at the top the page to access the eBay page you need.

If you have any doubt about whether an email message is from eBay, please forward it immediately to spoof@ebay.com and do not respond to it or click on any of the links in the email message. Please do not change the subject line or forward the email as an attachment.

If you entered personal information such as your password, social security number or credit card numbers into a Website based on a request from a spoofed email, you need to take immediate action to protect your identity. We have developed an eBay Help page with valuable information regarding the steps you should take to protect yourself.

To get to the "Protecting Your Identity" Help page from the eBay site, please click on the "help" link located at the top of most eBay pages and select the following topics when the "eBay Help Center" window appears:

Safe Trading > If Something Goes Wrong > Identity Theft

We encourage you to review additional information about protecting your identity found in the eBay Help system. Please click on the "help" link located at the top of most eBay pages and select the following topics when the "eBay Help Center" window appears:

Safe Trading > If Something Goes Wrong& > Account Theft > Account Protection

Once again, thank you for alerting us to the spoof email you received. Your vigilance helps us ensure that eBay remains a safe and vibrant online marketplace.
Regards,

Ian

Important: eBay will not ask you for sensitive personal information (such as your password, credit card and bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, etc.) in an email.

Yikes, that is scary! I was just going to go on there and look for swimming/diving stuff!

Good luck! Hope you straighten it out! :sunny:

Thanks, Lewski...I'm waiting for an agent now. :)

4nana, Ebay HAS CONFIRMED, through the email address listed in the email from Ebay that you posted, that the emails ARE from them. I don't think you got THE SAME email as I did. The email I received was not on Snopes, nor on Ebay's website as fake. Was your acct suspended? And none of the emails asked for password, credit card and bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, etc., because the emails ARE from Ebay.

MaryAnnDVC,
Hope you get it resolved. Hope I helped!

Mary Ann,
I hope eBay gets things worked out with your situation. I can imagine, thru no fault of your own, how frustrating it must be. No, my acct. was was not suspended. This is the spoof email I rec'd w/eBay logo.

This is the live chat transcript:

Thank you for your chat request; an agent will be with you as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience.

ME: My acct was suspended, and although I’ve sent copies of the emails I received to spoof@ebay.com and ebay has confirmed that the emails are from them, I’m leary about sending copies of something like my driver’s license to try to clear this up. I’m also concerned about this “investigation” involving my ebay acct, and what’s going on.

EBAY: Your chat session has started.

GREY: Hello and thank you for contacting ATO live chat., my name is Grey. How may I assist you today?

GREY: I’m sorry to hear that. Let me take a look at your account. Please confirm both your user ID and email address.

ME: (I did so).

(waited)

GREY: I do show Ebay has requested documentation relating to proof of identity.

ME: Isn’t a copy of a driver’s license personal info?

GREY: It is actually public information.

ME: Does it have to include my driver’s license number?

GREY: We requested this to ensure we only restore the account to the true owner.

GREY: It does.

ME: OK. I’ll have DH fax it tomorrow. Can you tell me what went on with my acct??

GREY: While I do appreciate your wanting to have that answered, I am unable to provide any account information until we receive and review the requested proof of identity.

ME: Oh…OK. But then you will??

GREY: Yes. Please include a telephone number so we can call you if needed and explain further the situation.

ME: OK…will do. Thanks, Grey.

GREY: Thanks for visiting ATO live chat. Have a great day. Grey.

EBAY: The agent ended your chat session.
So, that's that. I hope this helps someone else in the future! I'll post what happened with my acct, if I ever really find out.

That Grey guy helped me too, along with others. He was great. I would trust the Live Chat help. No one can imposter a direct link with Ebay.

MY DH had same probem with Ebay suspending him and he has been very active. He contacted safe harbor and got it resolved. Never had to send Copy of DL to them.

Your Dh's problem is probably different from Mare's and that is why she had to send a copy of her DL to Ebay.

Mare I hope you let us know what Ebay says regarding why your account was compromised. :earseek:

Wow!! I just got home from work and couldn't wait to read this thread - was thinking about it all day.. I work with college financial aid and many times the student or parents driver's license #'s are in fact their SS#'s and I was SOOOOOO afraid you were going to give that out to someone..

I'm glad to hear that you pretty much talked to someone "live".. I've never heard of this happening before and I will be anxious to hear how it's resolved in case it ever happens to me..

Make sure you keep us updated - okay?

And thanks SOOOOO much for bringing this to everyones attention!

Hope it gets taken care of lickety split!! ;)
