Now keep in mind before I tell this story, that I love my mom to death... she is truly my best friend, but some days even your best friends can drive you crazy!

Tamie and I and another co-worker are throwing a shower for one of the girls in the office tomorrow night. Tamie (who by the way, should be a party coordinator), did most of the planning and put together some super cute invitations, baskets, and party favors. That was just a plug for her and her hard work.

I am in charge of the cake. Saturday Tamie called left a message... she had purchased a box carrot cake to try. I mention it to my mom (just in conversation).

"Oh yuck! Box cake! I got a really good recipe for carrot cake" :)

"Is it easy?"

"Oh yeah, really easy"

Hmmmm.... sounds good to me. Tamie confirms that the box cake is actually very good, but no.... I say "You know, I'm gonna try my mom's cake."

I work until 6:00, stop at Paper Warehouse.... call my mom to tell her I'm on my way home, and that I won't be going to the Republican District Chair meeting as I have this cake to bake (by the way, I don't live with them, but 95% of the time I eat supper with them, and I don't have an oven, so I will be baking there tonight). "Oh", she says, "if you have the ingredients, I'll help you make it." Sounds good to me.

"Do we have a Bundt Pan?"

"Oh, you don't want to do it in a Bundt Pan."

"Yes, they (Tamie and Sarah) want a Bundt cake."

"Why? It would be so much easier in a cake pan."

"I don't know, that's just what they want. It will look nicer."

I get home... again, because I eat with them, I don't keep any food at my house.... while I often buy groceries, I always do so to supply and "return" what I eat with them. I eat quick, and then write a list of ingredients I will need to purchase. I go to the store. I come home. I start the cake. We don't have oil!! We always have oil. I go to the store. I come home. I resume the cake. We don't have enough salt. I go to the store. I come home. It's now 9:00. My mom says, "I told you to start the cake earlier.... you have to bake it an hour yet!" I kid you not, I got home at 6:45. I finished eating at 7:00. I wrote the list and left for the store. While I was writing the list, my mom says "You better start that cake." I'm not sure what she thought I was doing, but I certainly was NOT writing a 15 page essay on Paul Revere!! Sure glad she told me to start that cake early!!! I got a little irritated, and reminded her that 1) She said this was an easy recipe 2) I started the cake pretty much as soon as I could and 3) She said she was going to help! Now, she certainly didn't need to help, but then don't bother "helping" with remarks like that. (I didn't say that last part by the way.... that would have been disrespectful). She takes out some carrots and peels them, and then leaves the kitchen to put something cooler on cuz it was hot in there. Meanwhile I grate some carrots, but have to quit to stir the flour in quick.... she comes back and cleans off the counter.... gratings and all right into the garbage!! *sigh*

I survive all the "extra" instructions, how-tos, and clean the kitchen as you go regiment (this is why I don't cook while she is home). I put the cake in the oven, set the timer, clean up and come to lurk with you for awhile.

The cream cheese and butter should be soft enough... I go to make the frosting. I survive. I clean up......the powdered sugar container gets left on the counter (now for me, this is no big deal.... while I am a perfectionist to a fault, as long as the container is neatly setting there with the other tools I will still need, this is okay. I have to clean the whole kitchen up when I am done anyway.) I go back to DIS. She walks in the kitchen.... "YOU DIDN'T PUT THE POWDERED SUGAR AWAY.". It would have taken her less energy (if it really bothered her that much), to open up the cupboard and set it in there. I get up and put it away.

The cake is done. I go take it out. I am flipping it out of the Bundt Pan. She comes in.... "I told you to use a cake pan." "Gee thanks.... now that you've made that perfectly clear, will you help me get this out?" "Yeah, but you should have used a cake pan."

I am literally setting down the hot Bundt Pan and turning around to put the knife in the dishwasher, and she picks up some pans we store in the oven, and says, "You need to put these back." I am now fully sick of being nagged, and I say (very nicely, I might add). "I know that." "Well you didn't do it." *double sigh*. I JUST TOOK THE CAKE OUT OF THE OVEN!!!!!!!! "MOM!! SHEESH!!!" She says, "I'm going to bed." I say, "Good! I love you, but I think that's a good idea."

No wonder I don't like to cook!!!!

Okay, that was longer than I intended it to be. SORRY!!!

My goodness what an experience you had;)

Sure do hope the cake was worth it all in the end:p :Pinkbounc :bounce: LOL!!

Oh my, what a night!

I hope the shower is a success!

Yikes!! Good thing you LOVE your Mom!!!

All the things you said you WOULDN'T/DIDN'T say to her, I'd have had No Problem saying to my Mom under those circumstances! I love my Mom too but, we're kinda 'out there' with our feelings/opinions, good and/or bad.

I'm sure everyone's gonna love your cake! (Have faith, at least Dopeygirl wasn't helping you ~ she broke her finger over cookies!) :p

Oh Heidi. I am sorry. But having survived a cake disaster for Ian's Birthday Cake in June, I am allowed to laugh at another Cake Issue.

I am sure it is delicious, and everyone will be impressed that you did make it from scratch.

Have fun at the shower!

Debbie

My mom would have done the same thing, except, she would have totally taken over. "You're not doing it right!"

I hope the cake is good after all that. :)

Wow..I am impressed at your restraint!!! Good for you...I would have lost it....actually no I wouldn't, because there is no way I would have cooked with my mom around...lol. Glad the cake did turn out well though.

LOL!

I never knew that suggesting a bundt cake (because it would look nicer and serve up easier ;) ) would be such a hassle for you Fish! YIKES!!

Glad it turned out and I can't wait to taste it tonight!

Tamie

LOL!!
This is why I would never cook w/ my mom around! :teeth:
I hope the shower goes well. :)

LOL! I don't like to cook with my mom either - at least not in HER kitchen! LOL! She is great helping out in my kitchen, but things have to be "her way" in hers. I guess we are all like that really. ;) :)

Fishbonet, that was a very funny story!! I can see myself and my 15 year old in the same scenerio. Only I hope I wouldn't throw out ingredients :p
