I want to cry!

In PA we have state inspections every year so no way you could buy a car that didn't get inspected if you lived in PA. The bad part is that we have to fix things before they can pass inspection. Unless you did some serious off roading, your car would not have that much damage.

I work for a very reputable and honest repair shop, whenever a vehicle comes in we always do a free inspection. That free inspection is part of our job as well as an obligation to our customers. There are times that everything checks out fine and cars do not need any maintenance or repairs. But there are many times that there are a lot of issues with customers vehicles, we list them in order of importance for the customer. It is our job to explain everything to the customer so that can make an informed decision. I think that it is ridiculous when a customer gets upset that we have found something wrong with their vehicle, would you be happy if you weren't told and that part failed leaving you stranded on the side of the road? If you are skeptical about a recommendation ask the person to show you what they are seeing wrong with your vehicle. They should be able to demonstrate the failure to you.

I have been in the service side of the car business for over 17 years and the amount of good guys by far exceeds the number of bad guys, but the bad guys ruin the image for all of us.

yes i have a copy of the report. im glad to know that there may not be anything wrong with it. if there is something wrong with it, and if it cost around $400 or under to fix (with labor) then i will be happy!

WARNING . . . DANGER WILL ROBINSON . . . WARNING
1) Go and take the car to another dealer - definitely!
2) Ask for a safety check.
3) DO NOT show them the previous report.
4) Let them inspect and see what they find.
5) Then, do a comparison side-by-side of the two reports.

I think the honda place wants money. What kind and year of your Honda we have a pilot? Haven't heard of any recalls.

today i took my van in to the honda dealership because the shift interlock was recalled. so i take it in and they ask if i want to do a free multi-point inspection. i said yeah sure why not. i was going to get my van looked over anyway before our trip. so i get a call saying my van was done but they found alot of problems.
my right side engine mount is broken, front engine mount is broken, p/s pump is leaking and making noise, r/f strut is leaking, right side axle boot has a small hole (leaking grease), leak from the trans. side rec diag., r.f outer tie rob boot is weather crack, and there is an oil leak somewhere.

this is NOT what i needed when we are getting ready to leave for a very long car drive to Fl. in just over a month.:furious:

Honda estimated a little over $2000 to fix everything! we just got the van in Nov. (my birthday gift) and then i get hit with this.

and this is stuff i just cant ignore and wait till we get back. ugh! if i lived alot lot lot closer to WDW (like 15 mins away) then yeah, maybe. but we are driving over 27 hrs. no way im taking that chance!

Everything on that list should be able to be demonstrated to you while the vehicle is on a lift. I am going to guess that this vehicle has over 100,000 miles on it and you did not buy it from an actual manufacturer dealership (Honda, Chevy, etc...). Am I correct in guessing that?

I greatly dislike *most* mechanics ~ we need our vehicles and they know it, they charge so much for their "work" - I believe many make up problems.

Luckily I have a neighbor engine guy ~ he got my Altima that sat for over 3 years going ~ $170 in parts *he replaced the fuel pump, air filter, fuel filter and a hose of some sort* I gave him $148 for his time.

I'd maybe get a 2nd opinion ~ I'd for sure stay away from this first place, I bet your car is fine.

We're missing too much info, but I suspect this a used car, and of course, lemon laws only apply to new cars

Not true, here in MA we have lemon laws for used cars. However restrictions do apply, such as time since you bought it.

Best of Luck OP. Hope it works out for you. Im not one that believes all dealerships/mechanics are bad. And I LOVE my Honda Pilot, just sold my Honda CRV last week, a 97 with 158K miles :thumbsup2 and have a Honda Accord as well. Hondas are great vehicles...
Id much rather know that there were issues than be UNpleasantly surprised by them ...especially while on a vacation.

Get a second place to review the vehicle (and clearly not the one that sold it to you).
perhaps some of it can be delayed until absolutely necessary and maybe some is just "over reaching" for now???

Hope you ll let us know how you made out! pixiedust:

I loved my Honda Odyssey, but I only had it 3 years so I never developed any problems except for one-the transmission. Mine was a 2007 and the transmission problems were supposedly solved starting with the 2007. I would still have it had my dealership been able to repair it to my satisfaction. That being said, check the Odyclub forum for any info on your year model. If there are any problems specific to that year and make, they have experienced it and some of the posts are lifesavers for how to get it fixed and what to expect price wise. Great group of people on there too! Good luck!

We are AAA members, and have had excellent luck with AAA certified mechanics. A dealership is the LAST place I would ever take a car, unless it was something that was covered under a dealer warranty, or a recall. I'd recommend locating a AAA certified shop (most will advertise this fact), or if you have an Angie's List in your area, look on there for a recommendation. Also ask friends and neighbors who they use and trust to get your second (or third) opinion. Good luck! :)

Had a 2003 accord that needed extensive work for the number of miles that were on it. Had work done (approximately $3000). My husband wrote Honda and complained and we received a partial refund. That car now has over 200,000 miles. We were original owners and the car was maybe 3 or 4 years old at the time. True story. Still can't believe they gave us $ back.

I stand corrected. Restrictions is an understatement. I don't think any of the OP's issues would be coverd, and the maximum warranty perior is 90 days
or 3,750 miles if the car has less than 40,000 miles

From the website: http://www.mass.gov/ocabr/business/autos-transportation/lemon-law-used.html

Warranty Length: The coverage depends on the mileage of the vehicle at the time of purchase as outlined below:

Mileage

Warranty Period

Less than 40,000 miles

90 days or 3,750 miles, whichever comes first

40,000 to 79,999 miles

60 days or 2,500 miles, whichever comes first

80,000 to 124,999 miles

30 days or 1,250 miles, whichever comes first

125,000 miles or over

No express warranty

I grew up in PA, believe me there are many crocked mechanics that would pass cars that should not be passed.

no im not upset that they found so much wrong. im upset that there IS so much wrong. and to your other question, yes i bought it from a used car dealership and it had just over 160,000 miles on it. but thats the reason i want to cry. we are so close to our trip only to have all these problems.

That is a high mileage car. The list could all be legitimate for a vehicle with that many miles on it.

I just looooove when these repair shops offer a "free multi-point inspection" and go on to find everything wrong with your car.

From what you're saying they've found, I'm thinking they're full of it!

I would take it to a regular mechanic and have them check it. DON'T tell them what the Honda place told you. Just tell them you're getting ready to take a long road trip and want the car checked out to make sure everything is safe.

Another thing, dealers typically charge 2 or 3x what a regular mechanic would charge.

Finally, if you only bought the car in November, you should be covered by the Lemon Law. Look into this NOW before it's too late!

I agree, get a second opinion.

But, I wouldn't be surprised if all of that was wrong since the vehicle has 160,000 miles on it.

For the age and mileage of the car, what were listed as problems aren't completely unreasonable.

If it will make you feel better, take it to another mechanic and get a second opinion.

WOW! Yep, those things could possibly be wrong with a car that has over 160,000 miles on it.
