I Usually Don't Notice Things Like This But....

Oh dear....and I have just found a REALLY good part time BSN nursing program that I want to start in January 2008. And I am 44 years old! I would have done this 16 years ago but was stupid enough to get married (another long story!).

Please tell me I am going to be okay....

PS....I already work shift work....9-1-1 operator....just got subpoened for a murder case...a call I took 2 years ago that I don't even remember....and the worst part....I never knew the woman died....
By all means, go to nursing school. Yes, it's hard work. But the one patient you take care of that always remembers your name, gives you a smile and says 'thank you" no matter how little the thing you do for him/her, makes it all worth it. Plus, we need good people in this profession.

And for all those who look to the hospital for overweight people, (I am not one of them) just take a look around you the next time you go to an amusement park at the teens and even the little kids. They have no stress. Their only excuse is the poor diet their parents (me included at times) expose them to because we are all in such a hurry these days to get on to the next thing we have to do that a fast, frozen dinner or (Heaven forbid) fast food dinner is easier than taking time to fix a healthy meal.

I have been an RN for 5 years. I work in OB in a hospital. It is so tough. As the years have passed it seems to have only become more difficult. That is because the emotional stress threatens to suck away your spirit. It's not the physical work that causes dread... it's the emotional stress.

Nurses, we must do all we can to increase awareness of what we do. We are highly skilled professionals that are overworked, and underpaid. The media and entertainment have been a large detriment to us. Shows like House, Grey's Anatomy, and ER not only portray us incorrectly, but they dis us! Check out The Center for Nursing Advocacy.

Here is a photo of some of the amazing people we call nurses. Our own hospital does not even recognize nurses week. Instead it gives us a day during "hospital week". This year (for nurses day) a local mega-resturant gave us a nice dinner, prizes and open bar in thanks for all we do. :cloud9:  This is a photo from that night. It felt so very very good to be recognized.

You're gonna be FINE! I had to reply becuz I too used to be a 911 Dispatcher. I LOVED the job - hated the politics...now I know you can't run away from politics...

Sorry to hear about the court case...ugh - I had to do that once...it wasn't so bad as the defense attorney didn't ask me much. The most embarassing part was it came in as a 911 hang-up and when I hit the redial button on our phone I didn't realize it was still recording - so the whole time the phone is dialing and ringing you can hear me humming the funeral march song....daaa dum da dum...the call was from a well known family... OOPS!

I had to go to the ER several weeks ago and the doctor I saw just reeked of cigarette smoke.
Can't say all the staff was overweight though.

I've not seen to may overweight but while my godson was being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer hospital for cancer it made me sick to see Dr's and nurses standing outside smoking! The absolute worst though was seeing the cancer patients hooked up to their IV poles, sitting outside on the bench smoking!
