Ok, I am seriously technically challenged, I am thinking about an I-Touch (is that the one without the phone? or I-Phone, whatever) for my daughter for Christmas- Now, my questions:

I know the phone is $199, how much is the service monthly? Is that with our without the phone? Do I need to have AT&T service or can I keep my T-Mobile service? Does the internet work without the phone? :confused3

Can someone explain this gadget to me please! HELP!

I am technically challenged as well, but will tell you what I've learned so far. iPhone has a phone and requires monthly fee and contract with at&t. iPod Touch does not have a phone and does not require monthly fee. If you have a wireless router hooked up to your computer at home, you can access the internett at home on the Touch for no extra fee. If you don't have a wireless router and do not plan to get one, there are still lots of apps that do not require internet service, plus of course songs, movies, tv shows, etc. HTH

the I touch is the one without the phone. There are a couple of different versions and a couple of different storage levels. Lowest price currently for a new current generation 8GB one is about $195 but Target has a printable 10% off coupon on their website and there may be other deals out there. Refurbished models are also available.

The iphone is only available thru AT&T or Apple and you have to take out an AT&T service contract to buy it. The contract is expensive as you have to have phone service with a monthly data service as well. We currently have AT&T and I calculated the monthly service at about $100 minimum but you might be able to get a better deal as you are currently not with AT&T.

The phone can be had for much less than $199 as there are refurbished versions out there for as low as $49.99 for the 8GB but you have to take out a contract for two years.

As others have told you the iphone is a phone with camera still & video, mp3, games, video(movies, tv etc) and other apps.

The Touch does not have a phone but can be used as one with skype it does every thing iphone does except camera.

As 3boymthr said the iphone requires a two year contract with ATT but our plan only increased by $35 not $100 the data plan is $30 and I got 200 text a month for $5 not required.

You do not have to have wireless internet to download apps the touch can be attached directly to your computer to do so (it is how you charge it unless you buy a wall adapter)

You can get a 32 gig 3rd generation touch through amazon for $274 with free shipping and no tax you also get a years subscription to wired magazine, $5 in free MP3 downloads and $3 in video downloads.

I would go with the 32 gig over an 8 gig for 4 times the storage and the upgrades in hardware that the 8 gig does not have.

If the iphone is the way you decide to go keep checking apple and att as both have had refurbished iphone 3GS for as low as $49.

Oh, sorry, I meant my total cost was going to be $100/month not increase by $100/month. The increase was about $40/month. But I don't have any data or texting right now.

The iPod Touch is the non-phone equivalent of the iPhone. The iPhone can only be had (legally) through AT&T with a service commitment of two years. If you don't need the functions of calling, texting, and "internet anywhere" then the iPhone is not for you.

The iPod Touch has wifi connectivity, so if you are in the presence of a free wireless network (just an FYI - Starbucks wireless internet is NOT free) such as certain libraries, coffee shops, and friends' & family's houses, you can connect to the internet to browse and use apps that require internet. There are other apps that do not require internet connection - in fact, most apps do not require internet connection.

A lot of apps are free, and there are also a lot of paid apps. You purchase them through iTunes and connect your iPod Touch to your computer to sync the apps to your device. Not only can you sync apps, but you can sync contacts, calendars, music, movies, podcasts, and more... all of which you can either purchase from iTunes or other means. Any music that is already in your iTunes Library is able to be synced.

Hope this helped.

And to point out (like on another thread), be careful with the free shipping/no tax thing as mentioned before from Amazon. That is not the case for all states, as some charge tax. But other than that, Amazon is a great place to look!
