So I did it. Ordered me a cannon xsi 450d. My first DSLR.

So, now I need help on what type of glass I should be picking up.

I got the kit lens (18-55 IS) can anyone tell me how bad or good it is?

I also hear that EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM is a good lens.

Looking forward to some feedback

Thanks

Mike

i've heard the 18-55 is is decent for the price but never used it http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=335&sort=2&cat=27&page=1... since this is your first dslr i'd hold off any other lens purchases till you use your camera for a while and then you will know if you usually think "rats i wish i could go wider" or "rats i wish i could zoom closer" then buy accordingly. if you are looking for a lower light, the 50 f1.8 is regarded as good and under $100

The newer kit lens (the one with IS, that comes with the Xsi) is not bad, quite good for the price. A lot of people want something longer for those distant shots (like AK), Canon's 55-250 is a good match for the 18-55.

Canon's 17-55 is a very nice lens but costs more than the camera. If the price is not an issue Canon's 24-105 is also very nice for a walkaround lens. Canon's 10-22 is great for those wide angle photos. Of course, no one should be without a 50mm for those low light shots, I used mine at a wedding last night for some good candid photos.

here is my take.

the first thing you need to do is to and use the camera with the lens you have. Learn what it will do at this moment and what it will not do. Then and only then figure out what pictures you want to take that you can't currently get with your equipment. Then that will tell you want lens you need inorder to get those pictures. Using this method you will save yourself a bunch of money buying lenses you will seldom if ever use.

This from the guy that has an entire backpack full of lenses he doesn't use.

thanks for the tip. will be a while before i can afford anything anyway.

I really want to be able to take great night shots, and fireworks down the road.
