1 Dead In Disney Monorail Crash
No Magic Kingdom Guests Injured, Officials Say

One person is killed when two monorails collide at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Walt Disney World employee was killed when two monorails carrying several guests collided at Magic Kingdom, emergency officials said.

According to Reedy Creek Emergency Services, the monorails collided at about 2 a.m. Sunday, killing one of the train operators.

The name of the driver has not been released. The operator of the other monorail was not injured.

Eight other people were evaluated after the crash, but no other injuries were reported.

A witness told Local 6 News that he heard a loud crashing noise when the monorails collided. Video obtained exclusively by Local 6 News shows guests trying to help the driver who was killed in the crash.

The monorail has been closed, and an investigation into the fatal accident is under way.

Walt Disney World vice president of public affairs Mike Griffin issued a statement offering condolences to the employee's family.

"Today, we mourn the loss of a fellow cast member. Our hearts go out to the family and fellow cast members who lost a coworker and a friend. Safety of our guests and cast members is our top priority. We will work with law enforcement to determine what happened," Griffin said in the statement.

A Disney spokeswoman declined to discuss details of the accident.

My thoughts go out to his family.

I made a thread about 3 hours ago, but no matter.

It's just lucky it happened at such a late time, and not in the morning, or another time when the monorails would be packed.

Prayers to everyone involved.

Don't all the monorails go in the same direction? It's like that at Disney land but I don't know about Disney World.

^^^^
They were going the same way. But you know how when they get too close the one behind stops for the one infront to pull ahead. Something must have messed up and the monorail (sp?) didnt stop and crashed into the one ahead of it. the system got messed up.

I'll be in WDW tomorrow, and I really hope they are back up and running! Which, i bet they will be, It's a main source of transportation.

^No, they have monorails going in the opposite direction at WDW. However, this ones were going the same way.

My guess is that the driver must have fallen asleep at the wheel. Only logical thing I can think of, unless something within the monorail failed.

I had just woken up, and I didn't see it. sorry.

If he had fallen asleep, there are sensors and computer systems that will automatically stop the monorail if it gets to close to another one. Also, there are certain buttons and safetly checks that the driver must push at a certain time, and if he doesn't, again the monorail will stop.

So my thinking is that the brakes and whatever computer system that was running must have failed or malfunctioned.

I'm so scared! I'll never want to go on the monorail agian! I love the monorail! I feel so bad for the driver and his family

I hope you're seriously not scared of the monorail because of this one incident. It's the first monorail crash that has resulted in a fatality. There have been rides that have crashed before, you know..

I heard about this hours ago. But it is really sad that that happened. Plus, my brother was at Disney and had just missed the crash. Good thing he wasn't on that monorail.

No, its their first at WDW it sa in the article.

What a sad story!
Geez, the DIS is super depressing tonight!

My father did a little research on this subject and he found another place (Not sure where) It said that the purple backed into the pink. I'm not saying this is reliable source but that's what he found. :scared1:

It's not the first accident. A train had to be evacuated once due to an onboard fire, and I'm sure there have been other injuries as well.

As somebody else said though, this was the first the resulted in a death.
Prayers to his family.

Sounds possible, chances are they were transfering one train from one beam to another.

my cousin works there and at about 1:30 in the morning yesterday he sent me a text saying "holy **** there was a monorail crash" so I went online but there weren't any news stories yet and today I wake up and it's all over the place.

I heard that the purple train was stationary, and the pink train rammed it. after the collision they somehow pushed both trains into the loading area at ticket and transportation so that the people could get off of the monorail and paramedics could get to it easier. Also I heard that there was no one in the control center.
