I think my dog is dying . .EDITED: The medicine is working!

We have a 13 yr young chocolate lab she had a similar thing a few years ago happen to her she got weak and wouldn't eat turned out to be a tick type disease and antibiotics helped her she is doing great now
we also have a 14 yr young brittany who is doing pretty well he had throat surgery last year in feb. and is slower but still gets around good and loves to snuggle on couch so as long as there is quality of life thats what counts good luck and hopefully the meds work

I hope the antibiotics work out. Glad you took her to the vet.
My thoughts are with you. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

It is really hard. I wish they lived longer. We lost both of our kitties last year. It was VERY hard. They had been part of our lives for such a long time. They are our kids. One was almost 13 we found out he had cancer and the other was a little over 15 1/2 and he had a stroke. The 15 1/2 year old was in my life before my husband and I got married which will be 15 years in November.

It was hard to make the choice to put them to sleep but I couldn't let them suffer. I miss them so much. :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

I dread something happening to our dogs. One will be 10 this year and the other 9.

Let's us know how you make out with the vet visit.

Hey auntie - I did go this afternoon (see post 17) - the dog did eat some soft food and took her antibiotic. Now we'll just watch the next few days to see if there is some pep in her step and if she's eating more.

Those of you familiar with dogs this size might be interested to know that she weighed 54 lbs today.

I hope your dog is feeling better. As a dog hits their old age it is very difficult knowing what to do. Just take it one day at a time. I hope the anitbiotics work.
I had a Doberman that I had to put down at the age of 11. She had Wobbler's , which eventually parallized her. At the time, it was such a hard decision. We took lots of pictures of her right before, as things got worse. I never felt right about putting her down until months later, when I looked at those pictures and saw all the pain she had on her face.

I hope the meds work. I will say a little doggie prayer tonight ....

Kim..sorry I missed your update. I read the poem..and frankly that was IT for me. Anyone with a pet is in your situation sooner or later. I hope your pup gets some relief and it turns out to be an infection, that the antibiotics will help with. Our Sheltie did have a tumor..that was benign (sorry sp?) on his chest when he was about 9. We had it removed and he lived another four years..without incident from it.

Kim it's good to hear shes eating a little bit. A couple of weeks ago I had to take my lab to the vet she's 13 or 15 I can' remember if she's a 95 model or a 93, but I took her boo whoing something terrible. I thought for sure that they would have to put her down. It was just terrible... Anyway the vet took one look at me and could not decide who looked worse me or BJ. Anyway just a simple vet examine and we walked out together a whole lot happier then when we went in LOL! She's doing great. My thoughts and my prayers are with you and your Lab. I hope she gains some strengh and make a full recovery!

A Pet's Last Request

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, this I know,
Don't let your grief be allowed to grow,
For on this day, more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stands the test.

We had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears,
Would you want me to suffer so?
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they tend,
and stay with me until the end,
And hug me tight and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see,
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Do not grieve that it should be you,
who must decide this thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Now Im a hardened "farmer" type but you made me weep like a baby.

Im so glad to hear you went to the Vet- I hope it all turns out well - Whip

Glad you went to the Vet...I hope the meds help! Keep us posted!!:goodvibes

Wow, that is small. I have a yellow lab. She weighs 83lbs (she was much heavier but did well or her diet which has helped her arthritis). She will be 9 in October.

I hope she improves with the meds.

My dog has so much more pep in her step!

After a few doses of antibiotic and a cortisone shot, our lab seems to be doing much, much better. She is moving on and off the couch easier and is also eating! She isn't hanging her head as low as she was and I'm also not noticing as much drool. The drool was coming from the side of her mouth that has the tumor/lump. The vet said the excessive drooling could be due to a blocked salvia gland.

I'm glad I took her to the vet. It did cost a little over 100.00, but was well worth that. I don't know what my breaking point would've been had I needed more test run on her. And I'm so glad that something as simple as antibiotic gave her more energy and appears to make her feel so much better.

Thanks to all of you for sharing your stories of sick and loved pets. I really felt a little uneducated about this. I'm glad I asked here!

Have a good weekend - and if you're from the deep south, then "Happy Mardi Gras"!

Kim,
I was so sad to hear about your sweety being ill. I'm not real good at consoling, so I didn't say anything,,,but the the truly wonderful and loving folk of these boards are the kinda friends to have around when you need advice, help and encouragement.
It really did my heart good to read this morning that your sweety is doing much better.

i'm glad to hear your pup is doing much better. sometimes it is just something simple (so to say). thankfully, you don't have to worry about where that breaking point would be.

i had to put both of my cats down one at 16 yrs and the other at 18. they were brother and sister and we had them from 9 weeks. the first one we took to the vet at least 7 times to put her down. we brought her home each time. it was so hard to make that call. we stayed with each one at their last moments. i feel i owe them that. i feel much better knowing that i was there for them all the way to the end. yes, it would of been so much easier had they gone on their own. but, i couldn't let them be in pain.

keep them pets happy and healthy ;) .
