I had a hysterectomy last Thursday (the 10th). It was done laproscopically (however that's spelled...), and it has really been a lot easier and less painful than I expected. I got my staples out yesterday, and that was the first trip out of the house since getting home from the hospital. Stopped at Michael's on the way home, was there less than 10 mins. And went up and down the stairs in my two-story house several times.

and then... well, I did just a FEW weight training exercises for my arms... just one 5lb weight, and only 5 reps 3 times each arm, about 4-5 different exercises. I've been feeling like such a slug sitting around all the last week. It was no problem at the time, but today I'm back to taking Advil and sitting around doing nothing.

I'm a big stupid idiot, and I'm whining. A great combination.:sad2:

Sorry you're not feeling so great. I had my gall bladder removed laproscopically in December. I felt pretty good after a few days and hubby thought a stroll around Walmart would perk me up because I was feeling pretty trapped. Well....after about 15 minutes I was ready to go home, and the next day I was just exhausted. It's tough to remember that you just had organs removed when you have such small incisions and don't hurt much!

Take it easy and hope you are better soon :) I would not be lifting weights though. I had a D & C on Monday due to a missed miscarriage and my discharge instructions were no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for 2 weeks....I would imagine a hysterectomy would have similar limitations, if not more. I know I feel like resuming normal activities but I am determined not to overdo it and have a set back.....it is tough though since I have a 2 yr old who does not understand why mommy cannot pick her up :(

I am scheduled to have an endometrial ablation on Wednesday but just found out this past Thursday that my endometrial biopsy came back bad and my Dr. repeated it to make sure and said that if the repeat one is bad too I might be looking at having a hysterectomy instead. I am FREAKED OUT about it. I find out tomorrow what the results are. I have to say, it is VERY encouraging to hear you say that you are feeling so good so soon after.... I am reading all about them online incase I have to have one and it seems like people recover a lot faster now than they used to. I remember my aunt having one years ago and being in bed FOREVER.

Take care, and feel better soon!!!

The whole thing really has been a lot easier than I expected. Hopefully you're situation won't come to that, but if it does, if you're anything like me, it won't be so bad. Let us know, though, ok?

That's so often the problem with the laparoscopy hysterectomy....the fact that you really do feel pretty darn good soon afterwards makes you do more than you're supposed to. If I remember correctly I had strict instructions not to lift anything over 2 pounds for several WEEKS.........so I'd stop the weight training stuff for the time being. One of the problems with lifting heavy weights after this kind of surgery is that even though you look healed on the outside, you're still healing on the inside and can easily tear an internal incision open.
You really don't want that!

Also this is a prime time for adhesions to form and lifting more than you should just encourages adhesions.

Can you believe in the *olden* days when women had this done and they were sometimes hospitalized for weeks? My how things have changed!!

BIG difference from what my mom went through 17 years ago, that's for sure!

I was actually told I couldn't lift anything over 15 lbs, that's why I didn't think the 5lb weights would be a big deal. I'll definitely be putting it off, though.

I think I might have figured out what I did, though... at the doctor's office after he removed the staples I tried to sit straight up using my ab muscles. Didn't even think about it until I felt the pulling. What's particularly bothering me is where the ovary was removed. Dull, achy, Advil really isn't doing a lot for it. I'll just be taking it easy. I'll be the one making sure the couch doesn't go anywhere. :)

I had a radical hysterectomy 4 years ago(stage 4 endometriosis). It is easy to overdo. I found that if I made that mistake the best thing I could do was to have a day in bed. I agree with those that say no weights. Lifting weigths is a total body activity (everything is connected). I would wait until you are relased from the Dr.'s care. Not something I would mess around with. It is just a few weeks.
