We have a whirlpool countertop microwave 1.5 cuft 1200 watts. Its only 3 years old. I love this microwave. I have never been this completely happy with an appliance before.

Last night in the midst of cooking dinner and doing homework, I put some rolls in the oven and set the timer on the microwave for 6 1/2 min. and walked away. At least I thought I set the timer. After about 3 min. I noticed a loud humming and rattling noise, ran out to the kitchen and realized what I did.

This morning I tried to use the microwave again - this time with food in it :(
It ran, but it was loud and rattley and crackley, and it barely heated the food at all. It took 3 times as long to heat up a small breakfast sandwich.

I'm glad it was me and not DH or DS...and that's probably what they are thinking too. I am just sick about it.

Do I have any options besides a pricey repair or replacement? Thank you for any suggestions and help.

My wife did the same thing. You cooked the magnatron. Most of the microwaves warranty the magnatron for 5 years. Check your owners manual. We had ours fixed and just had to pay for the repair call. The repair visit cost 75.00, but the microwave cost much more to replace as it is the type with vent fan over the range. Working like new now.

I looked up the owners manual online. Our warranty is only one year. That's not very good, considering I bought what I would consider a "good microwave".

I called an appliance repair store and they said the part alone would be over $100. Since this is a counter top model it is not as expensive to replace as the kind with the built in hood fan. Still, its $150-200 to replace. I am so bummed. And I am so mad at myself for being so careless. :(

Last night I went to use our micro and when I hit the start button...WHAP... this loud zapping sound. Now it still runs but won't heat up...guess ours is fried too. Really stinks as it's a built in over the range kind and we have no $$$ to fix it at dh;s truck cost 2k to fix last week.

This happened to us a few years ago. 5 year old microwave (above the range type - GE brand). Horrible sound came out of it. It worked otherwise - turntable turned, lgihts came on etc. But it couldn't heat a cup of water!

We ended up replacing it. We were out of warranty, and our appliance store said it would be more to repair than replace.
