I survived Disney without my wallet (experiment)

Tips are included in the price of Uber, at Table Service meals you can leave the tip on the receipt (although as I mentioned, my mom left cash) and my mom tipped the housekeeping. Should probably tag this more as "I survived the parks without a wallet."

All in all... obviously it had its flaws. I'm not saying it worked as much as I'm analyzing its success. I personally survived the parks, but I made sure to call out its flaws.
No, they are not

I never go anywhere without id, a cc and some cash. I keep them in a money clip in my front pocket which is no burden at all. Magic bands are convenient but it's stupid to rely on them too much.
I learned this the hard way about Apple Pay. I didn't realize I left the house without my wallet, and happened to have run out to a store that takes Apple Pay, so problem solved, right? Nope. This particular store, even though they say they take apple pay, makes you swipe anyway. Luckily I had emergency money in my car.

I see nothing faster in having to awkwardly touch Mickey to Mickey then reposition the hand to input the pin etc. using a card is faster for me. My height and arm length and wrist flexibility means that watches and scanners don't mix.

If you can't charge the day of checkout then the perk is lessened since MBs. We've charged to the room post checkout before.

Since you carried id and ap card I just can't call this touring without a wallet. You used a rubber band instead of a wallet, but you still carried more than just MB, and highlighted why they dropped the marketing concept of touring with only the band early on.

IT goes down you're sunk.
Asked for ID, same.
Need to use a discount for something...
Want to buy a balloon from a cash only balloon vendor...
Want to visit Dvc lounge...
Trip off a curb and break your nose and get to go to the hospital where you need id and insurance card...
Take a taxi home and need to pay them...
As to the bold, when was the last time you went? Noticed this week they have new machines at 90% of the locations. So much easier to use

As for hospital card surely I'm not the only one who's provider has an app with our ID card on it
I've never carried my card unless I'm going to the doctor.

I like the overall idea but I'm coming from a perspective of never having carried a full wallet to begin with. No way would my husband want to have his wallet in his back pocket stabbing him all day at a theme park and no way do I want to carry a large wallet.

Now for the past couple of years I have been carrying my cards in a Vera Bradley ID pouch but even when I'm going to WDW and USO in September I won't carry that around even with the key ring attached to it it just would take up too much space in the small bag I'll be taking than if I just had the cards without the ID pouch.

Last time my husband and I went in 2011 we just put cash, ID, and 1 card each (I believe at that time we were using our debit cards) in the ziplock bag along with our cell phones that was then put inside our bag (a small bag meant to be used for scubba divers). The ziplock bag was meant as double protection for water rides just in case the scubba bag failed (it didn't but I still like the extra protection of the ziplock bag). Now last time we didn't bring our medical cards with us in the actual parks but I may consider adding that for this upcoming trip. Both our names are on each card so we would only have to bring one.

I loved reading it, I always wondered if it was possible , thank you :)

No, they are not

No, but the Uber app does not allow tips. As most people don't carry cash (in normal lives, not vacation) those Uber drivers miss out on a lot of tips. That's one of their big complaints. I myself am guilty of being in an Uber and remembering I have no cash to tip. :(

I don't think I have ever tipped an Uber driver. My passenger rating is 4.8 so I also don't think they really expect it.

Uber is supposed to be cashless & I will fight for that until the end! :stir:

That said, if the app allowed tipping, I would tip.

DH uses an app. I take a picture of the front and back of the insurance card for each member of the family when we travel. I normally switch to a smaller ID/card holder vs the normal large wallet.

I always carry a bit of cash and one credit card with me when we go into the parks but I've never had to use either. I only carry that in the event that the system goes down but we've not had problems. While technically they are supposed to ask for ID every time you order a drink, I've not been asked for it in WDW since I was about 24 (and I definitely don't look that age now!) so I don't bother to bring that with me. But if you look under 30 they will ask you. I carry my iPhone with me so now Apple pay will also be a possibility. But I will continue to carry a bit of cash and one credit card just in case of system issues.

Interesting experiment - thank you for your report! I love the idea of traveling light, but I even take my insurance cards along (had to take one of my kids to urgent care in Orlando, so it's good I had those).

You are not the only one, that's for sure. I think a lot of Uber passengers don't tip. Especially at Disney as cash is not something many have on hand, even those not relying on MB. It was a pain to have to find change for Uber when we used it. And we won't use it without tipping. To us that would be like dining out without tipping. I was glad to learn Lyft allowed it. Uber could but have opted not to. Then they would be truly cashless. Having small bills for tips was one less thing to worry about at Disney

The taxi commission here in NYC is pushing Uber to allow tipping via app, and it looks like it will probably happen. Uber did advertise themselves at first as being "no tips" because the drivers were contractors and not employees. In fact, their policy as recently as May 2016 was "there's no need to tip" but that verbiage has changed on their website. So, I think a lot of the confusion is Uber's own fault.

Usually when I get to Disney the big wallet goes in the safe and I breakout this little "cash zipper" thingie that I got durring food and wine from the chase lounge one year. It has a plastic window that I put the ID in and a zipper pouch that houses my Disney visa. It has a clip on it so I can either just put it in my pocket or clip it to a lanyard

Last year I just showed my phones Apple Pay chase card to gain access to the chase fireworks area and lounge

It would be nice and I said it in a different thread before but when a magic band is scanned at a store the Disney visa discount should apply automatically. DCL just added the "DV" to the keycard so there is no longer a need to present your physical card.

I haven't tried showing My phones Apple Pay Disney visa to get the discount but if that worked that leaves me with just my ID but, I drive the rental car so I really need to carry that with me, however it could probably slide behind my phone in its case

Left my wallet on the roof of my car while leaving DS once with everything in it, thankfully an honest soul, parking lot attendant probably, found it and turned it in with everything in it ,made for a very nerve wracking afternoon. They were nice enough to let me in for free when I went back to lost and found to claim it. Since then I buy a cheap nylon wallet every few years and take only ID, single credit card and copy of insurance card with a little cash. Also once lost my keys while on the Kraken coaster at SW, had them in a zippered pocket, but unknowns to me a tear just big enough for them to fall through had happened. Thank God for AAA, sent a very nice locksmith to meet me in the parking lot who cut me a new key and did it for less than the AAA maximum. Now carry a key ring with something attached and a a single key when I drive and use the lockers on the big coasters whether required or not.
