It's very weird. All of a sudden I started smelling something burning in my foyer. I've checked all the rooms and the basement. I've checked all the appliances and lamps. But, I only smell it in the foyer. There's nothing there. I had my dad come over and look. He smelled it too, but couldn't find anything. There's even a warm spot of air near where I smell it. My dad was able to open the attic door, but he didn't see or smell anything in there either. I'm not sure what to do. I don't really want to call the fire dept if there is nothing wrong. But, it's just so strange that I would smell something burning for no reason.

I have had that happen in my home, too. Just disappeared as quickly as it came and never did find out what it was. Since it was the foyer, did you check to see if it was coming from outside?

Hope all is well.

Do you have a fireplace? Sometimes, even in the summer, ours starts to smell like it's being used....when it obviously isn't.

Just a thought, hope nothing's wrong!

Steph

Do other people smell it?
Could a neighbor be cooking out?
Is there anything that was left in the window with hot sun beating on it?

I would call just in case. Better safe than sorry.

We had a strong smell of burning in our house one day. Couldn't find the source either. Our friend who came over while we were looking said there was a car fire near us. That is what it turned out to be:sunny:

If you still smell it I would call the FD to come have a look. Years back at my grandma's house I smelled a really strange smell. It was like fire but I couldnt put my finger on it. My mom and grandma were there too but didnt smell a thing. Anyway turns our she had an electrical fire and it started on the inside of her wall burning to the outside of the back of the house. If I hadnt kept on about the smell it would have been a much worse fire than it was, considering neither one of them smelled anything.

Did your house get hit by lighting last night? We had some pretty wicked lightning! They just showed something on the news about all the lightning strikes we've had..(especially last night) that will hit a house and smolder and then catch fire. They said it could get between the walls. There is a company there in St. Louis that deals with this and they have some equipment that can actually check the walls/areas for hot spots. I would keep an eye..er in these case nose on it!

Check for burned out wires between the walls. Had that happen to the folks across the street. Martha stewart wanna be

Sorry for not getting back sooner. I think we found out what it was. There is a halogen lamp in the living room right near the foyer. I know those can be a fire hazard and I checked there, but I didn't smell anything near it. When DH got home, he looked in it and saw that there was a fly in there that had been "charred" (his word). So, I'm sure that must've been what it was because the smell was gone by the time he got home. I'm glad we found out what the problem was because it probably would have kept me up all night.

We've had that happen before. Bugs love the light, but halogens are worse than bug zappers. They don't get many bugs, but they do......EWWWWWW!
