I signed up!

I just signed up too....

I keep thinking it will be neat if my Soldier was someone I knew from when I was in the Army, like someone I went to Basic with or something....:scratchin

I've had three emails from my soldier and emailed him back three times so far (once every day since I got his name.) He seems really nice....he's married with three daughters and is originally from Oklahoma. I didn't expect to have an actual email pen pal, but I can't wait to send him his first care package.

Just giving this a bump....

And a quick question....What about microwave popcorn, or wouldnt they have a microwave around? I love my movie theator butter and it make a long day a little bit better. (Especially if I melt some chocolate chips on the top.....)

Great question.

I have questions too about what they have. Should I send DVD's?? What if they are out in the "boonies" for weeks on end living in a foxhole and would be mad if they got a darn DVD they couldn't play anywhere??? :rotfl:

Honestly, I'm embarrassed to say I don't really understand the type of living arrangements they have and would hate to upset them by sending the wrong thing.

First, I'm so excited. It's the first time I've ever multiquoted. I've met one my new year's resolutions:cool1: :rotfl: Sad I know

Okay, do ya'll have your soldier's email or already been in contact with him/her? I would ask that person what their living quarters are like. Some places are great with access to everything and some are pretty crappy with not a whole lot of anything. I'm not sure if everyone has access to microwaves unless it's in the DFAC.

I think that dvd's are safe to send because most people have some sort of way to watch dvd's either with a buddy or on their own personal player or in a make shift dayroom.

You'd be really suprised what the living areas are like. My husband just moved to a new area and there is squat there. Really small and not built up. He is living in a tent and one hot meal a day from what I understand. Mail is sent up to them once a week from the big camp.

The last camp he was at was an okay area but they had Guitar Hero tournaments and MWR tents with phone banks and computers and make shift libraries. In his office, a portable trailer, were a few rooms that includes having a telvision with Armed Forces Network, which is cable but not all the stuff that we have to choose from. I understand that AFN is a day behind. Whatever we seen on American Idol on Tuesday night is not seen until Wednesday night there time.

Sorry that was probably way too long to answer's ya'll questions.

SA has a thread which is similar if not the same organization for troops from other countries, such as Canada.

lovemygoofy-appreciate all your info. Your answers can never be too long.

On the other SA thread (in the Budget Boards) someone posted about anysoldier.com. I signed up as a SA a few weeks ago and think it is a wonderful organization. I also enjoy visiting the anysoldier website as you can send a card or care package only once if you want. Everyday soldiers post there wants. I am surprised how many want cards/letters. I have sent out a lot of postcards. There are also some great ideas of what to send. Plus unique requests like used golf balls, legos, etc. And the difference in living arrangements really surprised me. But what I love the most is the great pictures showing all the wonderful things our troops are doing that does not make it into the news. You may see a picture of a soldier helping Iraq women open a clothing store, giving toys to local children etc. It also surprised me that soldiers need batteries, hand warmers, blankets. I just assumed they were provided with those basic items.

Sorry for the long post.

I just signed up! :thumbsup2 This is such a cool program, I can't wait to find out all the info and start sending stuff!

My family and I were inspired by this thread and adopted a soldier this weekend. The information we receive besides his name was

HHC SCOUTS 1-87TH IN 10TH MTN
FOB WARRIOR
APO, AE 09338

I've never had to send mail to anyone in the military before. Do I include all of this information on the envelope? Also he is a PFC, do I need to put this or just his name and other info. TIA for any answers.:flower3:

I believe that there are instructions for sending mail on the soldier website where you adopted but yes you need to put his rank and name and write this on the box, envelope, customs form exactly the way it's listed.

BTW in case you didn't know what the address means:

HHC-Headquarters Headquarters Company
1-is his batallion of the 87th Infantry Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division
FOB Warrior-Forward Operating Base Warrior is where he lives
APO-Army Post Office and the numbers is like the zipcode

How long does it normally take to get your soldier? I signed up on Friday and have not gotten mine yet.

I just signed up. I am a girl scout leader and think this will be a great experience for the girls.

Yours is annoying you huh? :)

How do you get emails for your guys, one was not provided for my guy.

Well, I guess I am just not meant to be an angel. It has been almost a week since I signed up and I still have not heard anything. They did not even answer the e-mail I sent them on Mondy.:confused3

Oh well, I tried to do the right thing.
