i-pod touches at BCV/BWV?

Thanks for the info that has been provided. I do have a question that I don't think has been answered yet. Would just a regular wireless router work. I saw the airport express from apple and I don't want to spend 100 for trip when I can use a regular router. Also, would I need to do anything special with the router before I go.

Yes, a regular wireless router will work. We use an older Linksys router at home for our laptops and iTouch. You will probably want to set up the router/iTouch connection at home first. It'll make it easier when you get to your room. Also, if it is your first time with a wireless connection you can call the router manufacturer while at home as opposed to on vacation if you have a problem setting it up! Once set up between the devices, just hook up the router in your room and, on your iTouch, go through internet access process for DVC members.

I think you can pick a plain-jane wireless router for around 40 bucks!

Thanks Bevis for your reply. I will get one and set it up. It would be nice without having to bring computer to do basic stuff if I have an itouch.

If you're already bringing a MacBook, you don't need a wireless router. Save your money!

Before you begin, hook up the MacBook to the wired network and verify that you have connectivity. Once the MacBook is online, you can begin.

1. Go to the System Preferences window.
2. Open the Sharing preferences pane.
3. Look for Internet Sharing.
4. Select the following options BEFORE you place a checkmark next to Internet Sharing:

Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet. To computers using: AirPort.

5. Click the AirPort Options... button that appears. You can name your network and give it a password. Click OK once you enter the settings you want to use.
6. Click the box next to Internet Sharing. This will turn Internet Sharing on. You'll be asked if you really want to do so; you do.

You kids will now be able to see the network you just created. They will need to enter the password you selected. The connection will be secure; no one can join the network without the password.

Please remember me when you have extra money to spend at World of Disney.

One reason a lot of people use the airport express is that it's very compact, and rugged. A regular Linksys or D-Link have a lot of air in the box, so if you travel the express is very nice.

Yes but that doesn't help you use the macbook wirelessly. Which is why I carry a router it's not really to use my iPhone, it's so I can use my MacBook on the balcony or in the living room, or where ever.

Agreed, but the OP said he planned to use his MacBook on the wired connection. If he wants everything to be wireless, then, yes, he would need to buy a router to do so.

I am almost positive that I got my ipod touch to work at BCV.

Since DVC members now get free wired access and many people are starting to travel with their own portable access points, it's possible that you simply tapped into a fellow guest's unencrypted AP. That's sort of a hit-and-miss proposition.

Disney is still charging for use of its wifi hotspots and they are few and far between.

When I had trouble with my old computer's ethernet port last year, the Disney techs told me to go to the Boardwalk, Coronado Springs, etc. ( I don't remember the whole list but it was any of the convention hotels) for free wireless access ( I am pretty sure that the WiFi was free) so that I could download a new driver for my ethernet port.

They said that I would have wireless access in all of the public areas such as the lobby and the pool area. Sure enough, I was able to connect in both places at the BWI. I didn't try the BC, but I would bet that they have it too.

Have fun!

Question,

If the airport express is configured for at home as just an extender, can it be used at DVC resorts without additional configuration? I know that it will not have a password, but I will only have it plugged in when i am using it with my touch.

Pj

You can't just plug and go with the AE at WDW. You'll need a computer to configure it the first time.

Thanks again for all the information, and to iteachlit for the advice on using the i-touches with the Macbook on the wired connection without a router, sounds promising. I have had second thoughts about buying the airport express router (though it looks great) and will probably wait to see how things pan out. Maybe we won't actually use the internet that much anyway.

And if you're in the Epcot resorts area over the next two weeks, look out for me and two tall teenage boys wandering around with i-touches looking for possible connection spots!

Cheers, Angie
