i-pod touches at BCV/BWV?

I think I've read here before that our i-pod touches won't work at the Beach Club or the Boardwalk, where we are staying later this month. (Haven't broken the news to teenage sons yet...) Just wondered if anyone knew if they can be used for free anywhere nearby, eg the Swan or Dolphin? Presumably our Apple Macbook should work ok on the cabled connection in our villas?

Also haven't told the boys that their favourite place, the Virgin Megastore at DDD has shut down, they will be very disappointed. Is there anything else comparable in the Orlando area?

You can bring your wireless router and use it in your room. I think you will be hard pressed to find anywhere on property, including Swan/Dolphin with free wireless access. I'm sure there are locations off property though.

I got an Apple Airport Express to use as a router for wireless. The first time you use the Airport Express you will need to use your MacBook to configure it. Then you will be good to go. The last couple of times I have gone to WDW I have left by MacBook at home and just used my iPhone for internet and mail. (Of course I also had the choice of only using 3G.)

If the airport express is configured for at home as just an extender, can it be used at DVC resorts without additional configuration? I know that it will not have a password, but I will only have it plugged in when i am using it with my touch.

Might be a blessing in disguise. I have a 18 year old son. We ban electronic devices like that while we are on vacation. We seem to spend alot more time together when we do. We did it on our last vacation in fact. Amazingly, he survived!

Orlando has your usual Best Buys, Borders, Wal-Marts around. They are all cheaper then Virgin Megastore ever was.

Some of the functions (e.g. internet access) on an iPod Touch need a wi-fi internet connection. Other functions (e.g. listening to music) do not need an internet connection.

If it's setup as an "extender" it's expecting to be a member of Wireless Distribution System (WDS.)

So no it won't work, you need to have it in either bridge mode, or router mode.

We were able to use our Itouches in YC lobby using the free WiFi there. It was slow but it worked. Many people were using their laptops also. I don't know if BCV's lobby is wireless!

Free wifi in the lobby? Do you mean there was no charge at all or it was free to you a a DVC member?

Oooh, johno, you really impress me with your knowledge of this. You need to write a column or a sticky thread for the DIS on using the internet at DVC.

We were not on points at this stay. We were on a cash ressie for 7 days @ the Yacht Club. We had a 2 night member stay at SSR. I was able to surf web check my personal and corporate email with no additional charge. Again I do not know if BCV has wifi in their lobby.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I will probably invest in an express router to take with us, although as I'd be buying it in the UK, I guess I'd better check with Apple that there won't be any voltage/adaptor issues in the US.

It is also possible that we could all actually survive for the two weeks without using the internet facilities on the i-pod touches.....!

The unit will work fine. However, you'll have the wrong type of progs on it. But any Apple A/C cord will fit it.

Infact I took an extra Apple Laptop cord and put it on my Airport Express. Because sometimes at hotels you can't get the unit into the power strip they provide you.

I also carry my own Cat5 ethernet cable. I know mine is good, and it tends to be a bit longer than hotels provide.

You'll want to bring a laptop along too, with the configuration program loaded. The one downside to the Apple Aiport Express, is that it takes special software to configure it, there are other ones that you just need a web browser.

As for configuration, I've used my airport express many times. The vanilla, "get an IP address automatically" in the setup wizard is what you need.

One of the great features of the Airport Express is that you can create multiple setups and save them under "profiles." I have a setup for home and one specifically for Disney. Launch the airport utility, select your airport express and the choose "manage profiles" from the "Base Station" menu. You can then create a profile for home and Disney configurations. Before you leave for Disney, launch the Airport Utility and select the Disney profile from the drop down list and you should be good to go. When you get home, switch it back and you are done. Very easy once you have it setup properly.
