My 16 yo nephew wishes to receive an i-pad for Christmas. His mother and I in discussing that possibility came up with a question .....

is it possible to put a daily limit on the i pad so it "works" for ...say.... an hour per day ?? 1/2 hour ?? more on weekends ??

thanks

No it won't but the kindle fire will let you do that. I hope this helps.

Not the Ipad. Although their could be apps you could download that does this. I just haven't had the need to search for them.

The Kindle Fire has all kinds of controls. You can control the time of day, the amount of time and even what apps they can use. For instance, you can block games but you can still allow him/her to read books.

Not that I know of. I am the "app" that limits the use of the iPad in this house. I say to the boy (who is 9) "Hand me the iPad in five minutes, you are done for today".

The nephew is 16, he should be able to understand time limits and time management. If he doesn't, having Mom hold it after hours should be sufficient.

My kids use iPads for homework. A few sites for school do not work properly on the iPad, but for the most part, they do research, type papers, create spreadsheets and slideshows (with Mac apps such as "Pages", "Numbers" and "Keynote", each around $10, worth every penny and more). Wireless printing is a snap.

Do they kill some time, too? Yes. Do they need to learn how to manage their time on their own? Yes. This skill comes with experience.

For that matter, I am now turning Disboards off, and will get some work done...:wizard:

Yeah we have the same app here too :lmao:

I am taking classes in a BSN-MSN bridge program and use my ipad more than I thought I would. :thumbsup2 I think the limits that were mentioned in the OP are a little stringent for a 16 year old, personally.

We block all of our kids' devices from having Internet after a certain time and dd is supposed to leave her phone in the kitchen at night so she isn't tempted to text all night. ;) Dh reads on his ipad, though, so not sure how a time limit would work.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm thinking that many of you are spot on, that at 16, the nephew needs to budget his own time. After all, college and independence is just around the corner ...

Around the corner is still in the future. 16 is still 16, and you can't expect him to be anything but 16. The average 16 year old still needs a nudge away from fun activities and towards his homework. The difference between 16 and college is IMMENSE.

I should know. I have an almost 16-year old and a college student. The older one is tremendously more mature, has a much better ability to budget her time, is much more responsible, etc., etc., etc. It's not an insult to the younger one; it's just where she is in life -- a few years ago, the older child was just the same.

I asked my dad about that for my daughter b/c she wants an iPad. He says you can somehow program devices individually thru your router so they won't be able to access wifi during restricted times. I haven't tried yet, but he says it will work.
