I noticed the updated rooms at SSR have door on the tub, any thoughts?

My DH uses grab bars at home in shower. In April , he did ok with the one bar and shower curtain at BLT. I'm concern those doors will give him issues Aside from cutting down on space climbing in and out, there is no way for me to help.

I didn't expect the need to request an accessible room and I don't know if we can still get one. DH only needs a little help in the shower area, nothing more as far as the room. I did just email MS to ask if all the rooms have the glass doors and explain the need.

I would go ahead and try to get a roll-in shower room; that way you can help him easier, and don't have the worry about the glass doors getting in the way.

Personally, I take a couple of lengths of this stuff (I try to buy the widest possible) with me on every trip, and put one outside the shower, and one on the shower floor for extra safety. It's washable (I put it in a lingerie bag, and wash as usual, then hang to dry).

Can you take or ship to the hotel the portable grab bars? I have balance issues on a good day and showers/tubs are one of my problem areas. I got suction cup grab bars off Amazon and they work well. I have DH tug on them before I get in and we've never had an issue.

I've seen them, but was always afraid they would pull off the wall. My DH is not light on his feet, and I'm concern he would rely too much on them.

Edited to add.....after surgery 3 years ago, we had grab bars at home installed and he really , really needed them at the time. Now it's more age and knee related, that he needs them

One note about the suction cup grab bars -- they will not hold if there is any texture to the surface on which you want to place them. We tried some at home for when my father would visit, but the tub/shower surround on my guest bath has a very slight texture (almost unnoticeable) and they wouldn't grab.

I have written to Member Services many times RE: this issue (grab bars in the bathrooms, not just in the tub/shower area but also near the toilets.) We are an aging population and many, many baby boomers own DVC. Some of us need a little help and others need more help with our balance, etc. in the bathrooms. Heck! Many hotel/resort chains have grab bars in their rooms (I am not referring to ADA rooms; they install them in all their rooms.) As a "deluxe" resort, I think that it should be a "no brainer" for DVC. It may avoid injuries for guests and will certainly make a difference to many of us.

My one and only experience with a roll-in shower almost resulted in a bad fall for me. The floor was wet when I stepped out, it was slippery as ice. I haven't ice skated in many years but the balance maneuver came back quickly and I was spared the fall. After that, we put towels down on the floor. If dh had been the first to encounter the floor (he is the reason I asked for an ADA room, but he is not in a wheelchair), he would not have been able to recover due to his balance problems.

However, I love your suggestion of the shelf liner. I will definitely look into this. Traveling is becoming hard. We can get a tub with grab bars or a step-in shower but we can't get a step-in shower with grab bars.

Good idea! What sort of answer do you receive?

I have balance issues and it‘s very difficult for me to use a tub. When I get a studio I almost always request the wheelchair roll in shower stall. I have to be very careful regarding the wet floors. I think it’s at VB where there are no OV inn rooms with the roll in shower. I have to get or bring a shower chair and thats very difficult. The suction cup grab bars do not adhere to the tile.

I think I also have written to DVC regarding grab bars in tubs when I first began the balance issues. I forget the response.

If you search Amazon for portable grab bars, the Ameriluck ones are the one I have, they are grey and white. I am overweight and not had any issues of them popping off. We also have textured tile in our shower and they work great

There are more options in wheelchair accessibility than just roll in shower.
If you want a tub, you need to change your reservation to WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE WITH TUB.
Those do exist and have grab bars in the tub area. I have not seen pictures of that class of room updated, but I’m sure they would not have the glass doors - they wouldn’t be accessible that way.
This is a screenshot from the Disney website, which does NOT have updated pictures. I think you said you had contacted Member Services - they should even be able to get some pictures for you. We contacted them about OKW and they did that for us.

That is the kind of room we had POFQ in 2013. Rm 5101, king bed, wheelchair accessible with bathtub. It was the room assigned to us, we did not request it. That was when I discovered the value of grab bars for dh.

Which is crazy to me. Step in showers need grab bars. It can be the difference in a fall and remaining upright.

DVC hasn't been about being "deluxe" maybe ever. I mean, no bathrobes, no concierge, you can't even get someone on the phone. When DVC can't even run a functional website website, it's hard for me to imagine any unnecessary costs and extra things to clean and maintain and break. I wouldn't expect anything beyond the required ADA rooms.
