In November of 2007, I bought a laptop I've nicknamed POC (take a guess). Since then, this thing has crashed multiple times. I have both hard drives replaced twice and then 1 hard drive replaced 2 more times. Finally, they replaced the motherboard and some other pieces. Thankfully, I've been able to fight with the manufacturer and have it covered because the thing is clearly defective.

The last time it crashed was right before I went into the hospital to have #3. Lucky for me, this time it crashed in the middle of my back up! Yay! So, that meant I got to bring it to my local computer place to attempt to retrieve information since my last back-up. I try to do it every week, but 2 kids, another on the way, I kind of slacked off and it had been about 3wks since my last back up.

$50. later and they say they can't get the most recent information.

I lost a bunch of songs in my iTunes library. They're still on my iPod, but not in the library. I've also since downloaded songs that are on the computer, but not the iPod because I'm afraid if I plug my iPod into my computer, it'll delete the songs on the iPod that aren't on the computer.

Is there any way to put the songs from the iPod onto the computer? Obviously, I want the 2 libraries to be the same.

Also....I have a Maxtor external drive and my stuff is on there.....but, I can only access it when it's plugged in. If I take POC to another room and unplug the external drive, the only songs on there are ones I've downloaded since the last crash. I have to plug the external drive in to have access to those songs.

I have no idea if that made any sense....I basically just want my songs from the external drive onto iTunes and the songs from the iPod onto iTunes.

I tried getting help online from iTunes, but they wanted $30. just to talk to me. I did an online search and all I find is information on how to do it sneaky and that it violates copyright laws. I don't want to violate laws - I bought these songs legally. I just want them back onto the computer so I can put my new songs onto my iPod and not lose the ones I already bought when POC crashed.

Thank you! :)

I just did this and I am pretty sure it asked me almost every time if I wanted to sync to this computer (which would cause me to lose what was on the ipod if it didn't match what was on the computer), but I swear there was a time when it asked me if I wanted to load the newest stuff from the ipod into itunes. I can't remember what triggered that, though... or if I'm just imagining it... :rotfl:

You shouldn't have a problem loading your songs from the external hard drive, but you have to load them into your documents or music folder, etc., not just load them directly into itunes.

I can help with getting your songs off the iPod and back onto the library.

Hopefully this link works - page 2 is probably the most helpful for you.

You basically have to manually manage your iPod so it works like an external hard drive - then find the "hidden" iTunes folder, drag it to your desktop, then drop it back into your iTunes library and it will reload everything.

I did it when I moved my library from my parents' computer to my laptop.

HTH!

Thank you!

I'll try those out tomorrow when I'm not under the influence of Ambien. :goodvibes

I'm also going to sign up for an online back-up system that will back things up every day automatically because I'm pretty sure POC is going to crash again and I'm sick of losing things.
