I've said before, that this Summer, I want to go to California to get some perspective on following a career in screenwriting, but I also want it to be a fun trip with my friends, going to Disneyland, and hanging around California some. We'll all be sixteen, my best friend, who will be driving, will have been driving since November, and since my birthday this year is my 16th, I'm asking for cash and me being able to go on this trip for my present.

Well, I need help in convincing my parents to let me go...

So far, I have these to help back me up:

  • I want to get serious about following a screenwriting career (you guys will probably help most with ideas related to this one)
  • I think I'm old enough; mature enough; and 'good' enough to handle a couple of days out there
  • I'm a good kid (do chores, doesn't get in trouble, good grades, etc)
  • It'd be a good B-day present (?)
  • I think I deserve it
  • It'd only take about 3 hours to get there.

What else should I tell them? Any ideas? Help would be appreciated, thanks! :goodvibes

Oh, and I've decided that I have to stay in the BEST of behavior. And act really mature, and crud. I'm also gonna do double the chores. :smooth:

Sounds good.
Except I'm 16 and no way in a thousand years would they let me go!
Good luck!

*Remember to say your very responsible ;)

Umm.. well I guess you would have to do well in school.. and you could do something to help your community.

just make sure not to say the words 'i think'...it makes you sound cocky and weak. another thing is, get notes from your teachers saying youre a good, serious, hardworking student. maybe a couple saying how helpful you are, as well.

never in a million years would my parents have let me drive to another state when I was sixteen [but they let me go to italy with a bunch a friends when I was 15 so they're weird lol]. That said, act extra responsible, and stress the importance this trip could have on your future. my parents like proof, so start researching what you're going to do when you're there and show them everything. Start hinting about it now so they get used to the idea.

I've got that covered. And for my community...well, I'm in MCJROTC, (Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) and they request us to volunteer, which I have done.

Cool...but I've already got a reputation as a good student and stuff. Never occurred to me to get a note, though! ;)

Italy? Lol I probably wouldn't leave the U.S., ever!

And I will take your advice...I'm gonna tell them how "if I want to get serious about this career, I need to start now, etc, etc," and stuff like that. And for the past few days, I've been researching about places to visit, even asking some people who've had experience in the screenwriting field. I've been told to visit the WGA building, among other places...

Well, time to be a COMPLETE 'angel'.

It depends how far across the country your going

For me Cali is a long ways

VA is literally all the way across the country

but if your only a few states away then its more likely

just sayin

Another thing I thought of:

We won't stay out late. (Honestly, we won't. You think I'm stupid enough to run around California at night? :rotfl: :rotfl: No. Way.) By, eh, 8:00 or 9:00 or so, we're back at the hotel. That should help some, eh?

Oh, I'm just a state over. It would take about 3 hours to get there.

Heres some ideas:
- Write out an itenery (a plan) for every day and what you plan to do/ when you'll be back at your hotel.
- Say you will have ur cell phone at all times, and will be able to be contacted in case, and will respect if they want to 'check up' on you regularly.
- Find out prices for everything, do a budget and expected expenditure lists (gas, spending money, hotel etc)
- Get your friends to do the same thing, and both present it to your parent and theirs. Get all the parents to agree that you are doing the right thing, even suggest the parents meeting up to discuss their approval.

Try and show you are negotiable as possible, and that you want to work together to do this amazing oppertunity. If they disagree ask them (calmly) their reasons why, and how you can try and make it better or suggest a change of plans. Keep them thinking you are working for the same goal keeps them on board a lot better!

Hope this helps :)

oh btw, witht he itenerary, Stick To It!!!
If you dont, they may not trust you again in future.

Also pick ur timming of asking them very carefully.
Ask them when would be an appropriate time to discuss a trip you have been planning. Then wait till they are in a good mood (always helps!), then talk about it as calmly as possible, and have all ur research with you.
