Alot of people I Know who like these bands like ben folds and vice versa (Ben Folds worked with Amanda on her solo album).

Tori Amos (wonderful woman, though the album The Beekeeper isn't a great release so I don't recommend listening to anything from that for a first time listener, "Little Earthquakes" is from what I'm told a good place for the first listener to start then work on up to her newest albums.).
