had a blood test a week ago for my annual totals and I blew it all....
My bp is good and my weight is good.......but
Cholesterol is bad bad and I am on meds......
My sugar is up and I am totally confused......

SO I need help to eat what is right and ignore the bad things........

It sounds like you need to cut out the bad carbs such as anything white (potatoes, white bread, regular pasta, etc.) You can replace then with whole grains and sweet potatoes. Also, you need to avoid sweets. Substitute with things sweetened with Splenda. Good luck!

Sounds like you have bad genes! Bummer! You've really got to watch the saturated fats (and fats in general). I've been told that when watching your cholesterol, fats should make up less thatn 30% of the total calories as a rule of thumb.

Another thing to really watch for is foods that are advertised to be low carb, tend to be higher in fat and vice versa.

Whole grains and low fat food are your first step.

Good luck!

I tried to keep my husband healthy by not cooking green items or salads...cause he is on a med that would interact with that......so cooked him the veggies he can have and likes and those are all high in carbs......
I have been giving him pasta and stuff and I am messing up royally......doctor said my levels were fine last january so he wants me to do what I was doing before.
Just upset me

Pumba - Have your dh get a new doctor! It sounds like he is on coumadin (sp?) If I'm wrong, please ignore the rant. My df has been living with coumdin for ~ a year now. His cardiologist told him just to make sure that he keeps the number of green veggies a day consistant and he will be fine. His regulart doctor said not to eat this stuff. Well, he's also diabetic and it's almost impossible to follow a diabetic diet without green veggies.

He started getting his meds through the VA and had to go there for checkups. Low and behold, they agreed with the cardiologist. Seeing as they were checking his blood levels and prescribing his meds, he went back to green veggies. (DM is thrilled, because she was at a loss for what to cook.) He has green tea with breakfast every day and at least one other green veggie with lunch or dinner. Everything's been great since they got on track with this.

Please check with dh's doctor or get a second opinion on this one. Staying away from nutritious food is just not a good thing. Sorry for the rant, I just see how much happier my df and dm are since they've gottent this cleared up. Green veggies just make up want too much of the healthy foods to go without them.

Good luck!!!! You'll get there, although it's got to be soooo frustrating!

You're right, Carrie. Green veggies can interact with Coumadin, but consistency is the key.
Pumba, if your DH wants to eat green veggies 3 times a week or daily or whatever, that should be fine, as long as he's consistent with it. If he stops the veggies or starts eating more than he had been, that will most likely mean a change in his Coumadin dose.

Just want to toss in my support and best wishes for you as you go through this. It may be a bit of a challenge as each of you need to consume differently. I hope you can find common ground. Don't forget to try to throw in some sort of exercise in the mix if you can. That will help more than you can imagine.
