I need 3yr old birthday help please

Ok I kind of know the theme I want. Kind of a Back to school theme. This all came about because my son LOVES school buses. So I found this cute cake on familyfun.com

ok so that is taken care of.

I got a lot of school supplies (kid friendly) for favors. While they were on sale.

Thats about as far as I got. My problem is our son is an only child with most of his family living cross country. Very few of our friends have kids his age. There will only be like 4 kids ranging from 1-5
So I decided not to have a party so much, more like a family BBQ.

Ok so now I just wonder how I can make it special for John (DS). Kind of hard with so few kids and all different ages.

Anyone have any ideas to save this disaster waiting to happen??

ALso I am looking for a cute idea to hold the favors. Any ideas at all???

My daughter will be 2 and she has the same age range of kids coming to her party, so it is a bit hard trying to plan games and such.
I am doing a pinata-if you want to stay on the safe side, you could always get the pull string type.
You could put the party favors in those colorful pencil boxes or lunch bags.
You could get a very large box, cut it out in a shape of a box, and have the kids color it yellow, then have them decorate it with stamps, pens, .... then they can go inside of it and play.
For the kids foods, you could put it in a brown paper decorated package that has their name on it and write-Richard's lunch... just like what they would take to school, and you could add a special birthday or apple shaped cookie.

I think you're party plan sounds great. When kids are young parties can get overwhelming. I would add a few easy projects that all the kids could do and set it up in stations so they can rotate around. Anything related to school or school subjects could fit your theme.

1. Decorate a cardstock picture frame with school related stickers. Then take each child's pic at the party so they can take it home. You can send the pics later with a thank you note if you don't have digital or polaroid camera available.

2. How about an activity with the alphabet. A easy to manipulate game for all ages is to have plastic magnetic letters on little metal burner covers or cookie sheets.

3. A game using numbers. Maybe a bean bag toss.

4. How about a cooking station. They can decorate a cookie or cupcake with ABC sprinkles.

5. A dress up station with teacher clothing and classroom props. My kids LOVE to dress up.

6. An art project

7. A music activity

8. Sidewalk chalk

Also, I just saw some cute little backpacks at the $ store that would be perfect for favor bags. I think it was Dollar Tree. It you can't find backpacks, what about those mini lunchbox type containers. I see those at the dollar store too.

sounds like an awesome party!

don't forget to have 'Music time' 'ART class', 'PE' and 'recess'
to have the party go with the school theme

you could have everyone (including adults) play
'Teacher may I?' (Mother may I?)
etc

also a 'class photo' with a little sign with the date/info
down front like school pics have
