I must thank Hillary Duff

I have to say that no, I wasn't completely aware of what they did offstage back in the day...I was only in 3rd grade when their first album came out! lol
But, I do know that at least on their videos, on their album covers, and in their lyrics they were pretty innocuous and I can't really say the same thing about B. Spears and a lot of other young artists today. Don't get me wrong...I'm not a prude...but I don't want my 5 and 7 yr. old DDs wanting to dress like them and emulating their on stage/on tv actions.

what they did back stage was not part of their image, Christa. no one was aware of it. of if they were, it wasn't part of the "act" and wasn't really discussed. they weren't singing about sex and drugs and they weren't acting like that's what they were about.

most of the male teen idols of the l 70's are good fodder for the "whre are they now" expose' shows done by VH1. Davids Cassidy hit rock bottom with drugs. who was it...Leif Erikson? -- who paralyzed his best friend in a car accident because he was driving drunk. but that wasn't part of their image, was it? not like guys like Meat Loaf, singing "Paradise By the Dashboard Lights" with all those "special effects" during Phil Rizzuto's part.

Lindsay Lohan has a squeaky clean image right now, but the gossip columns are full of stuff that she's not as clean and innocent as she portrays herself to be. still, I wouldn't mind my daughters idolizing the image...though not necessarily the person underneath.

if you hadn't pointed me to th link about their backstage antics, I would never have known -- though I might have suspected as much. but in show business, reality doens't matter, it's the image you presnet to the audience that sells. and for the parents of a teenage daughter, it's much better to choose an image projected by the Go Gos or Lindsay Lohan than that projected by Madonna or Britney, right?

IMO the only difference between the two is that with one you know what you are getting, the other well you are "idolizing" a lie.

they you'd better start poling around the bedrooms of every star yu like to watch on tv, in the movies, etc.

frankly, in my opinion, their personal lives are just that -- personal.

what matters to me is the public persona, the image.

would I prefer that my daughters choose "real" role models? of course. but if they're going to chase after rock groups and movie stars and sports heroes, I'd prefer that they chase after ones with a wholesome public persona than ones who promote sleazy images of themselves.

just for clarification's sake, it was Leif Garrett. Leif Erickson was a 16th century explorer. No big, just thought you'd want to know. ;)

One of the guys I work with is a big GoGo's fan and he plays them all the time. I had actually forgotten how much I liked their music. I always thought the drummer looked like my cousin. Now whenever I hear them all I can think about is Jane Weidlin dressed as Joan of Arc and living in San Dimas, CA. Thanks Keanu.

I agree, if they what they do behind closed doors is their business. But most do not keep it behind closed doors.

But if their "personal" lives become public then it becomes part of their public persona. Like it or not, they choose to be in the lime light.

Again I agree. There are better choices amoung the "celebreties." But I also see a big difference between enjoying the work of a celeb (ie the music of the Go-Go's, movies/music of Lindsay Lohan) then the celeb itself (ie Belinda Carlise, Lindsay Lohan the person).

So like I said, IMO the Go-Go's are not very good role models for kids , unless you want your child to be druged up and over sexed. That is not to say they do not have good music, I enjoyed it back in the day.

Shouldn't kids look to people they see day to day as role models?
Actors, singers and athletes are in place to entertain, not to instill morals and values.

:p Leif Erickson, Leif Garrett, that is too funny, Jennyanydots!! I didn't even catch that! I think I always thought of him as Leif Erickson!! :teeth: Thery're the only two Leifs I know of!!:p

Anyway, growing up and still today, I was/am a huge Beach Boy fan (who doesn't know this LOL) Anyway, they weren't angels and I know all about what they got invovled in. However, there image was pretty decent and their music was fun and nothing but nothing can change my mind about their music.

CindyB--thanks for that info. That gives me hope to find "Mad About You" by Belinda on a CD!

I think you are confusing parenting and looking up to someone. Parents should be the one to instill morals and values. Kids will always look up to Actors, singers and athletes as "Role Models."

We listened to these people while they were indulging in their wild private lives and seem to be doing just fine now. I like the Go-gos and if DS wanted to listen to them, I'd be fine with it. It's certainly better than Eminem and the like.

I can't believe there is a thread about this, 'cause the same thing happened to my 7 and 4 yr olds! I took them to Hilary's concert, and afterwords I told them about the Go Go's original song. I just so happened to have the Go Go's Best of Album and played it in the van. Now, that's all they want to listen to in the van. I LOVE IT!!! My kinda music.
