I read on a post that in the future it is possible that you may only be able to book at your home resort. Can someone help me to find that thread? Is this something that was said by a CM or is it in the fine print of the contract?

I don't think its a real possibility, its just one of them clauses that keep the Disney legal team in business.

Who knows what could happen, I just think that it is another reason not to buy VB when primarily planning WDW stays.

What section of the contract is it in? Personally, it would not bother me as far as WDW dvc properties, but I would really hate to lose the option of staying at HH. We own at OKW and BCV.

Wow-does anyone know if that's a real possibility? DH LOVES OKW, that's the only place he wants to stay, and yet, that isn't our home resort. Guess that's a reason we should look into changing home resorts after our loan for this is paid off. Just in case this ever comes true.

I know what you mean. We are thinking of adding on points at OKW, so I am wondering how possible this is. If they change their booking policy to only being able to book at your home resort this changes the whole scope of DVC. When we bought, we knew that home resort was important, but we also bought for the option of being able to book at other DVC resorts at the seven month window. I would not be happy if these options were taken away.

1) At some time, Disney will stop building DVC's.
2) Once sold out, all weeks are accounted for - mathematically.
3) At that point, one could assume no more staying at other resorts.
4) I can see the possibility of this happening.
5) But it won't happen for a long time.

Right now, all of the existing properties ARE sold out. Have been since August or thereabouts. Nevertheless, we aren't hearing constant reports of people unable to get ressies that suit their needs. Sure, some times are harder to book than others. But as long as you plan ahead, people seem to be able to get the dates/rooms/resorts that they want.

Also, it stands to reason that as long as the entirety of the DVC membership has a deisre to stay at non-home resorts, there will continue to be availability. You could argue that it will be harder to come by at smaller, more desirable locations like BCV, but as long as there are people with BCV as their Home who want to try the other properties, then those who do not own BCV will be able to book a stay at 7 months.

The ability to book at non-home DVC resorts is a perk, not a contractual right. It is one more reason why it is so important to buy where you want to stay the most.

I agree that this perk won't be taken away while they're still selling new DVC resorts.

I don't recall that it says we can't book at other resorts. It does say that the home resort "edge" could be reduced to as little as 1 month (instead of the current 4 months). There is also legalese protecting DVC if a resort were to be destroyed. But, as with the whole program, a degree of trust has to be placed with Disney "to do the right thing". So, far that has worked out. When I'm not so tired, I'll try to read through once again.

Sorry, doesn't make sense. Even whe all weeks are sold, as long as members are interested in staying at alternative resorts and those requests balance, there's no reason that there would be no mre staying at other resorts. After all, remember what happen's when you assume.

I don't see how it's dependant on new resorts and not simply an ongoing easy to manage trading methodology between resorts.

While I don't have my documents handy to look it up, the only reference I can think of about limiting reservations to our home resort is in the event that owners of a resort choose to remove DVC as the management entity or if an entire resort was destroyed and beyond any ability to rebuild/repair. In that situation, those owners would cease to be part of DVC and they could not use the exchange component (BVTC) of the program. They could not exchange to other DVC resorts and other DVC owners could not exchange into that resort.

Unless the owners voted to replace DVC, I'm not aware of any other mechanism where the option to use points at other resorts would be lost. As Pam mentioned, the provision to change the priority to as little as 1 month does exist (11 months/10 months instead of 11/7) and I don't expect to see that happen any time soon (if ever).

I sure wouldn't lose any sleep over the issue and would feel very secure if I owned at VB and wanted to book at BWV or OKW or BCV or VWL or HH or SSR in September at 7 months out.

I took a brief look at my documents. Could only find the following about being able to reserve non-home resorts.

1. If a resort is no longer a DVC resort or if a resort is destroyed or lost somehow. In these cases owners at that resort could no longer book into the other resorts.

2. Booking at non-home resorts was also subject to the Holiday Preference List. (My documents are from 1993. They did away with Holiday Preference Lists a long time ago.)

3. Change the home resort window advantage to only 1-month instead of the current 4 months.

So, pretty much as Doc stated it.

Thanks everybody. I'm surprised about the home resort statement. I would have thought that that the provision would state that it would reduce the non- home resort booking window. I now feel better about buying more OKW points. We just signed the documents and wrote the check!

I think it's unlikely for anything to happen. The current reasons any resort could or would leave DVC are if the owners voted DVC out, DVC decided to drop the management contract for any or all resorts or if the home resort were not available for some reason (natural disaster). It would be possible to modify this area with a vote of the membership, which Disney also totally controls so it would at least be possible to change the rules at a future date.
