I LOVE OUR DVC, BUT THIS I HAVE TO POST :(lengthy)

To answer some of the questions posed. Valet is out sourced to Mears and they have paid for a certain number of parking places at each resort. It is not within Disney's ability to change that just because they are empty. Disney Minnie Vans are completely owned and operated by Disney and driven by Disney Cast members with good standing and a certain number of years employment.

If driving, and the lot is full, I always ask can we valet.

In the past we have run into "LOCALS" who would utilize the parking at the resort then hang out at the pool. They bragged about how easy it was to park here and lounge for the day. I'm not sure this is still happening but you might want to take that into consideration as to why they are clamping down.

Dee,

I was referring to your proximity to the Security Guard. You basically told your kids to disobey the Security Guard's order for them to leave the parking lot by having them return in line again -- all within earshot of the guard. Again, putting it nicely, that was a "bold" move.

Good day.
To put it nicely: Piffle.

If my kid was in front of me and was told to turn around and I was going to drive up to explain things (thinking that maybe my status as a DVC member ane BWV owner would help) I would tell them to turn around behind me too. Where else were they supposed to go while I worked things out? What better place than behind me after I worked things out? It really was the best choice in the situation.

Thanks for clarifying. I read through the rest of your post and I will be more clear as well. Years ago all the valet employees and security guards were Disney employees and therefore trained by Disney, who hold themselves to a higher standard then the rest of the industry without being expected to. That's Disney. A standard we've all come to expect - so inxnay on the comment about me feeling entitled. That had no place in this. I have, as many of us who visit Disney do, a certain expectation of the way things are handled.

For example, "we're very happy to see a DVC member, a BWV DVC member wanting to spend some time visiting their home resort, unfortunately, due to ............ we can only offer valet parking options at this time...." "What we got was "if you don't have reservation, we cannot let you in, you have to turn around and leave".

Had the security guard had ANY sense of the fact that they are working at and in representation of one of the most "hospitable" places on earth, and approached us as such, my response would have been completely different. That being said, and I really really don't mean this to sound as nasty as it may, I say to my kids whatever I want in front of whomever I want whenever I want. They are my children. No one knows me or my intentions better. Also putting it nicely, I don't mind being "bold" at all, in fact I really like that about myself. More people should try it.....

Again, I appreciate and respect your opinion. Have a good night.

Totally understand the clamping down. And as I've stated in some of my previous posts, no more driving over to the BWV, even with reservations. We'll cab over or just not go. We stay there more often than anywhere else as it's one of our home resorts, 11 month booking window and all, so we visit it enough and now realize we don't need to take a car or pay a cab to visit, we can just go someplace else and see the wonderful BW next time around.
:love::love:

Have a great night.

@DeeCee735, I appreciate your frustration with the way the security guard delivered his message; and I applaud you for coming back to this thread multiple times and owning that things could have been handled differently by all parties.

My personal experience is that when we've visited the Boardwalk we've relied on Disney transportation. When we've stayed there, we've not had a rental car.

From 2/24 - 3/3 we were staying at BLT, and it was really busy with marathon participants/families the first weekend. We did have a rental car, but I realized when I returned from the Car Care Center that my arms were too short and the car was too low for me to reach the tap pad without actually climbing out of the vehicle so I had go through the guards at the gate each time we returned. Since we did online check-in and got mobile notification of when our room was ready, we had no need to visit the lobby desk; therefore, no paper parking pass.

We had no issues when returning to the resort most nights. I would take off my magic band (worn on my right wrist) and hand it to the guard for him to scan. I'd get a welcome back or welcome home and allowed into the lot. Only one night in the middle of the week did a guard give us a tiny attitude. When I pulled up and tried to hand him my magic band, he peered into the car and asked what our business was at the resort. We told him we were staying there. Then he took my band and scanned it. Had he done that first, his question would have been answered.

Thank you. I love the pretty Minnie cars, had to do it once, just because it was the more fun option.
When I'm there with my niece or children, I'll probably pay for them again.... other than that I'd use a regular Lyft ride...I think, is it less expensive than the Minnie car or a regular cab? I have no experience with Lyft other than my Minnie ride :)

If you are returning to your home resort there is no need to bother the guard, get in the lane with the automatic gate and scan your magic band and it will open.

That is what I normally do but see from my original post why that didn’t work this time.

Not all resorts have an automated entry lane.

She said she couldn't reach it. Didn't you finish reading her post? I have the same issue. I have to actually unbuckle my seatbelt and open my door to reach the scanner with my band. By the time I've done this and gotten the gate open, sometimes it closes on me before I can get through it!

When the security guard lane is backed up, I definitely go through the returning guests lane.
Sometimes the guards are nice enough to notice me and open it for me without the performance I have to go through to get through that lane.

The worst guard I've ever encountered was at the Contemporary! Rude! It was our departure day and we were trying to eat at the Wave - yes, without a reservation. If anyone knew the Wave a few years ago, you would know that often no one is there at 7:30am when they open.

He wouldn't let us in. We had to actually make a reservation to get in. The lot was not empty but far from full. He reluctantly let us in when we came back around with our ADR number.

That is what I normally do but see from my original post why that didn’t work this time.

If I don't get right up as close as I can to the scanner - like the car mirror just skimming by it - I have to unbuckle my seat belt and if I'm just a little further away I have had to open my door to reach over to the reader. I do wish they changed the electronics on them just a bit so it didn't require a touch against - even just being able to wave it within a couple of inches would make it work for me.

What I've noticed though is that not all guards will start out looking to scan your band which is a little puzzling. It seems to be a perfect use of the technology.

Old Key West has a single entry lane. It is controlled by the guard. This single lane is used by both busses and guests, so can get backed up.

I'll start with the good because I don't really like to post negative things regarding DVC or WDW, as we've been happy members for 18 years and recently spent (mostly) a wonderful few days with our growing family there. 1st time for our daughter in law, 1st time for our grand baby. 34th wedding anniversary for DH and I. This is the first time in 18 years we rented cars.

We couldn't get the 3 bedroom grand villa at BWV (one of our two home resorts), even though we were wait listed until 7 days prior to arrival. Okay, no problem. The grand villa at Saratoga Springs was beautiful, of course so roomy, offering plenty of common space as well as plenty of private space.

Having the car at Saratoga was a good idea, the resort is very big and we liked being able to park right outside our building. We used the car during the week to visit the Grand Floridian, to drive over to our reservation for Chef Mickey's at Contemporary, to go over to Animal Kingdom Kidani Villas (our other home resort) for lunch at Mara and to show our first timers the giraffe and zebra. As well as to and from the airport, of course.

In true Disney Spirit we were welcomed with friendliness and "welcome home's".

Until.....we attempted to go over to the Boardwalk in early afternoon for a bite to eat, shop in the general store and get ice cream. We also wanted our daughter in law and son in law to see the model room there so they could see what options they have on the future trips where we don't travel all together.

Well, we were stopped at the gate and literally told we weren't allowed in without a reservation. No explanation, no kindness, nothing. Just "you have to leave if you don't have a reservation". Well, Big River Grille doesn't take reservations, neither does the ice cream shoppe or the model room. My kids were in their car ahead of us and were told to turn around and leave, and as they were on the opposite side of the gate leaving, I opened the window and told them to get back in line to enter, behind our car.

I explained to the Security Guard at the gate why we were coming in, that this was one of our home resorts, and that the places we were looking to go didn't take reservations. Besides the fact that the Boardwalk presents itself to all the world as an entertainment, dining, shopping (and now bars) area welcoming visits - I explained this as well. She told me we couldn't come in. Okay, so now I'm getting a little annoyed. I ask her to get on the phone with her manager because I found this unacceptable. Keep in mind she did not ask me if I was going to use Valet Parking or anything of the nature...this matters later on. We were granted a two hour visit and she followed us to our parking spots.

I went into the lobby to speak to a manager. The manager said the same thing the security guard said, we weren't allowed in without a reservation to dine but that she was the one who gave us the courtesy two hour limit. I said the same thing to the manager that I said to the security guard, not all places take reservations. She told me they lost 200 parking spots to the construction of the skyway, I told her while that wasn't my problem, they could open the valet lot to accommodate cars. She said the free parking had to be available to conventioneers and guests of the hotel. I said I understand that, and that not all conventioneers may be resort guests, it's the middle of the day and the lot was no where near full. She said again we were allowed a two hour visit. I asked if we were to pay the valet fee can we stay as long as we want and go wherever we want with no questions asked. She said yes.

I said let me talk to my family, who were in the lobby now, watching this conversation. In all fairness, at this point, while not yelling (I don't go to Disney to argue), I was stressing my point strongly, so was she.

I walked over to my family and explained our options, which of course I was not in agreement with or happy over. Two members of my family told me the manager made a face and rolled her eyes as I walked away. I went back to the manager, got her name and reminded her that making a face and rolling her eyes was very unprofessional, which of course she denied doing. My son in law called her out and said they were watching the conversation and they saw her make the face and roll the eyes. I wouldn't accept or expect this in an economy hotel off 95, let alone a deluxe resort on property.

Okay, so we decide it's not worth visiting there since we were made to feel pretty unwelcome from the beginning, let alone childish responses (face making) from a manager. We were out of there.

I emailed DVC and explained the entire situation, along with the names of both the security guard at the gate and the manager. They did get back to me. Of course, and as expected, they defended their position of not allowing non resort guests access to the parking lot during festival time, (that was the first reason I got). I explained to the very nice woman on the phone that there were no festivals taking place during the entire time we were on property. She rethought and agreed. She further explained that new parking limitations have been placed on deluxe resorts. And that signs are sometimes posted and two hour visiting limits are sometimes put in place. I explained that none of this was told to us by either the security guard, or the manager and that no signs were posted. I also explained that when visiting Grand Floridian we were told there were two weddings, and resort was full so we may have a hard time finding parking, followed by a "welcome home" and "enjoy your visit". GF, it doesn't get more deluxe than that.

Bottom line, I was told things weren't going to change, and the two hour limit was all I could hope for when parking limits were put in place, although there was no sign stating so, nor were we notified of this. She did agree that the way it was handled was inappropriate and it would be looked into.

Quite a few minutes into the conversation with DVC member satisfaction, I was offered fast passes for a future trip. I took them and of course said thank you, although I don't really feel it was enough to compensate for such poor treatment of my family and I, or the time wasted with all this stuff. I'm not sure I expected anything, yet expected something. I just know I'm unbelievably disappointed in the way this was handled, the way we were so unwelcome and this unnecessary experience on our last day and in our favorite place on property. Of course, Disney would take our money (i.e., valet parking fee), restaurants, bars, shopping and ice cream at the boardwalk, but never offer anything worth a dime. Maybe a direct apology from the manager would help although that'll never happen.

I guess I'm just venting. I'm more sensitive than the rest of my family who already wrote this off as one bad experience in a great week. But I got a good dose of the fact that the all mighty dollar speaks volumes over customer satisfaction.

All of this being said, we won't let one bad experience change how we enjoy our membership going forward....nothing is perfect....and the nightmare in the dream, is hopefully few and far between.....

I am sorry but I too have to disagree with you. Let me ask you this .How would you feel if you were staying at bwv and left for the day and came back to your home away from home to find no parking or only parking very far away because others just visiting for the day were occupying so many spaces? Probably furious and for good reason. I am a happy dvc owner who like you enjoys traveling to other resorts to tour around and enjoy the theming . we use the free transportation that disney provides or at times have taken a taxi. Now disney offers Minnie vans that I believe can be used as well for this purpose for a fee. Please do not fault disney for implementing a policy and standing their ground when you tried to disagree with their policy. You could have taken the bus to Hollywood studios and had a nice enjoyable boat ride over to bwv or taken a bus to a them park and then a bus to bwv. I like the hws and boat ride option the best .That's what we do when we want to go to the piano bar . And we have fun doing it . Don't sweat the small stuff. I am one person of many thst is happy disney has rules for people to follow Without rules it would be utter chaos

After 25+ trips, we have stopped renting a car. But when we did, we kept a spare magicband in the car to use to scan at the gate. Much easier to reach with that than to use a magicband on a wrist. Before that occurred to us, I would just be ready with my band off to hand my husband who was driving.

I don’t think we’ve ever had a rude guard.

It’s been a policy for quite a long time that you can’t park at the contemporary without a dining reservation. You didn’t have one. I’m sure the guards at the boardwalk and at the contemporary, and other park resorts, hear excuses all the time for why people want to park there and because the lot wasn’t completely full didn’t mean it wouldn’t be. Either have a reservation or take another mode of transportation.

As a BWV owner (and rule follower) who used to always have a rental car, this is was a major pet peeve of mine...a shortage of parking spaces at the resort where we were staying.

Perhaps your husbands arms are longer than mine. I cannot reach the scanner with a magic band whether it is on my wrist or off my wrist. I drive a vehicle that is much higher than the scanners.

Most of them are not rude. They may not accommodate what your request is but aren't necessarily rude about it. This security guard was rude.

Perhaps that is in writing somewhere. Care to share your source?

I will make my own decisions, thank you!

I'm also a BWV owner and have always been able to park the vehicles I've driven to the resort. It would be quite unfortunate if I couldn't and I'm sure if I brought it to managements attention that I was back to retire to my room, and there was absolutely no place to park, I'm sure some accommodation would be fort coming. Sometimes it takes patience and it helps not to get too peeved with the system.

I have always just understood that you have to have a reservation, hotel or dining, to get through the gate...hence the gate. If we want to visit for shopping or ice cream we go from the parks. And Big River does have reservations as does Beaches and Cream now...all the food places except those little booths on the Boardwalk. Also, there are no model rooms there anymore...at least from what I was told. I am also a BWV owner and while I agree that the staff there can be less than super Disney like pleasant...in your situation I think they handled it fine (Maybe could have left out the eyerolls but I'd have rolled eyes too, sorry).

I can attest the fact that Big River does now have reservations, as we were there this past May. Also, The BWV does have a model room as we saw it this past May on the Boardwalk...

Thank you.
Thankfully this is all settled and behind us. No more visiting BWV when staying in another DVC with a car for us. Solves any issues that may arise. There’s plenty to see and do everywhere so we decided to leave visiting BW venues for when we are actually staying on property.

Appreciate all the input and points of view.

Dee
