Anyone see the new line of "I love nerds." in the disney store? Shows the characters in huge glasses?

Anyone not a fan? :sad2:

Me too.

Feel like Disney is making an unkind generalization. How does this make those kiddos with glasses feel?

Not the wisest marketing move IMO

They're trying to get into the nerd chic. The idea that being a nerd isn't a bad thing. If your kids think that being a nerd, wearing glasses, liking learning and not being into sports is a bad thing, then I would say that's your failing.

I personally love the nerds merch!! Its really cute!! I was hunting everywhere for the Mickey and Minnie vinylmations of it, but alas, they were sold out!! Shows I'm not the only one who likes the new merch ;)

wow...really?

so the 5 year old with glasses is supposed to understand that nerds are chic right?....

I suppose you think that the kids that are made fun of in school ...is their fault or their parents fault...

wow...

So why not post a pic of Belle with the word NERD plastered over her.?..

Oh wait, cause she's a princess....

Buit guess what girls, if you are a girl with glasses you are nerd chic.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Really, we thought it was cute. Dd has a hoodie (and she wears glasses and at the time thought she was getting braces).

ETA: I asked her what she thought about the above post and she has never been made fun of for wearing glasses - started in 4th grade and currently going into 7th.

okay so just to put a twist on it....

What if they came out with merchandise with Aurora on it... with a smiling sleeping beauty and had a headline..dumb blonde?

Any takers?

Stretching it...but same concept

Really? When were you in school? I've never heard of a kid being made fun of for wearing glasses as a 5 year old. I've never heard of a kid being made fun of at all for wearing glasses, including when I was in school. Glasses are now just a part of life, not something for mockery.

Now being called a nerd is, but all a parent has to do is teach their kid that education isn't a thing to be ashamed of, that being smart is a boon. And that can be started when they're five.

The merch is cute, it's very contemporary, and I would say most people like it. If anything it's teaching kids who wear glasses or are "nerds" that it's something to be proud of.

missfigment, if you really don't like that merchandise, send a letter to Disney regarding your concerns. In the mean time, avoid the stores that sell this merchandise. There will always be people who like a line of merchandise, and people who dislike.

Like I said, its a very popular line, most of it sells out quickly, so most people do not have this big a problem with it.

I wish they would have sold it when I was a kid. None of the Disney characters wore glasses when I did. I gave a little "Yippee" in the store when I saw it!!

I love the 'I Love Nerd' clothes. I wear them... oh yeah and I also wear glasses.
I agree with the PP why are you associating the work "Nerd" with negative connotations.
To me that is more offensive that people think being a nerd is a bad thing.

I am proud to be a nerd... a FEMALE nerd!!! :cool1:

You cannot shelter children from things you think might offend them and you cannot dictate to others what to wear (or not wear) on the chance it might offend others.

It seems to me part of being a parent is helping a child learn how to deal with exactly such situations (assuming the shirt did offend them).

I have been made fun of for wearing glasses. It's just part of childhood. Kids can be cruel and if it hadn't been glasses it would have been something else (freckles, or red hair or braces, or you get the idea).

For my part, I think the shirts are cute. :)

I dont have an issue with the characters wearing glasses...I think thats cute...

I guess some disagree...thats fine...but I do think its an unkind generalization.

I understand that "nerd" term is hot right now. I get it...

And I definitely understand you cant shelter children....because that kind of stuff is everywhere....

I just find it interesting that while society is a on an anti-bullying kick right now...that now is the time that Disney takes the term Nerd on and pastes it on a character with glasses. And that its acceptable and cute becuase its plastered on a disney icon.

Being a "nerd" is not really an insult anymore, that's kinda the point of the merchandise.

Like the previous poster mentioned, the term 'nerd' hasn't been insulting for a while now, as nerd/geek culture has taken on a life of its' own. There are a ton of folks who stopped wearing contact lenses and went back to sporting glasses just to let thier geek flag fly.

My DDs are 8 and 10 and LOVE the Nerds Collection. They both wear glasses and love school. My DD10 first saw the collection when we were in Disney in May and bought herself the backpack which she is also planning on using at school. Then our local Disney store got the Nerd Collection in and she was in Heaven. Since then both of my girls have gotten the Nerds Plush Minnie Mouse dolls and I had recently bought my DD10 the Nerds hoodie. I think the Nerds collection is really cute and I really don't think it is a insult to those that wear glasses and like school.

I don't care for them that much. It isn't that unique, as I have seen the "nerd chic look" for the past three or so years at school. Disney could do a lot better than follow a quick fad that is probably going to die soon.

So do you take offense that Tinkerbell is a small thin female? or that the Princesses are thin and a 'desirable' shape?

To take offense at cartoon charecters wearing glasses is a bit much considering all the things that children are subjected to nowadays (ever seen tv or the teeny tiny shorts marketed to tweens now?), there are much more important things to worry about in this world other thant if your glasses wearing child's self esteem will be bothered by a cute line of cartoon appearal.

To find it insulting is to assume the word "nerd" is bad. It's not! To us, nerds are the super smart kids, the ones that have it together. I was proud to be a nerd, and the whole idea of nerds is completely trendy right now. Stupid isn't cool, smart is.

Besides, I think they look more like "hipsters" than nerds anyway.

OP-Are you serious?

We LOVE the Nerds line. We even got the Nerd backpack, water bottle, and lunch bag to match the t-shirt, sweatshirt and shoes we bought my 8 year old for school. I have a t-shirt, and keychain that hangs proudly from my purse. I hope they make MORE of it. I would be really disappointed if they discontinued this line. And bullies these days do a lot worse than calling kids "nerds". The term "nerd" has been replaced with much more offensive 4 letter words.

Some people have way too much time on their hands to analyze stuff like this. It's cute. Deal with it. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

And guess what? Belle IS a nerd, remember? Thats the point of the opening song in that movie, how she is so peculiar because she always has her nose in a book. So yes, I would LOVE a Nerds line with Belle in it, because it fits her character, glasses or not.

She really is a funny girl that Belle...
