LOVE Food Revolution!!!!!!

I want him to come to my school and jazz us up!!!

I'd much rather have what he was preparing than what the school was serving. No wonder our children are so fat now.

I too loved his show last night. How scary was it when those first graders had no idea what any of the vegetables were? I knew that stuff in first grade and that was not all that long ago (19 years ago, wow that sounds like so long ago when I type it out).

I hope he can help make a change because what those kids eat is atrociuos and no one seems to really care.

DH & I don't have kids, but we were very shocked the kids could not identify even tomatoes or a potato. :scared1: Nor did they give them utensils to eat lunch with up through the 4th grade. Crappy finger foods all those years?

AND they were eating the same types of food at home.

This was NOT the types of lunch we recived when we were in school in the 70s.

I loved this show last night! What I found most shocking was the kids that wanted to eat the "chicken patty" that Jamie made after seeing what is was made with!

Also, those lunch ladies were nasty and mean. I understand that they are required to conform to the standards set by higher ups, but they were really taking all of Jamie's suggestions personally :sad2:. Alice annoyed the crap out of me...."chicken breast, first ingrediant" yeah, how about the 95 other ingrediants that aren't chicken breast??? I guess those don't matter since "chicken breast" is the first ingrediant :confused3

The silverware thing really floored me! What do you serve every day that doesn't require utensils? They had cereal for breakfast, do they have spoons? I can not comprehend going to school from pre-k to 6th (I assume that's what it is) and never need a fork!!!! We don't have knives, but that is because we had a "safety" incident so the kids can't have them, but spoons & forks are there and used!!

How do you not know what a potato is? Are there no farms in the south? Baked potato's? They even sell them at Wendy's for Pete's sake!!! Is there no Wendy's?

I'm guessing those kids had no clue because either their parents NEVER took them grocery shopping or the don't go to the produce aisle. Looking at that family's fridge I suspect it was the latter.

I watched and was was very disappointed by the way Jaime was treated. Those lunch ladies were mean, and yes, taking it personally. They need to realized it's not about them but the kids.

W.V. is my home state and I would hate for Jaime and everyone watching to think that all West Virginians have such a bad attitude and are so unhealthy.I hope the parents who saw the food demonstration are serious about wanting change.

I am quite sure you could take schools/families in just about every state, and all over Britain for that matter, and find the same situation. Processed easy to prepare food has become the norm.

I was really upset watching that show. DH was too. He has type 1 diabetes, and the idea of a kid in middle school possibly having type 2 diabetes because of his lifestyle really bothered him. I hope that was a big wake-up call to his parents. School food these days is crap, absolute crap.

The thing with those kids eating that crap for breakfast and lunch is it would make it much much harder for their parents to get them to eat good food at home. Their palate is going to be used to high fat, high sugar, high salt. And if you have a picky eater they know they will get what they want at school the next day if they hate their dinner. And how hungry could they really be at dinner after loading up on all of that?? I noticed that the USDA regulations didn't seem to mention calories anywhere, it was just servings without taking calories into consideration.

I, too, was disgusted watching that show. Disgusted at the lunches and the way he was treated. Heaven forbid a thousand times that someone try to do something *good* and *smart* in the school system.

I saw him on Oprah yesterday as well. They brought one of the huge caskets that America is buying. You need two plots to be buried in it.:sad2:

I was also a little ticked at the woman in charge-the one that decided Jaime could stay longer. She was complaining about the higher costs when he served his nutritious lunch. Well, yes, if you want to feed kids crap-crap is cheap. Quality costs a little more, but is definitely a worthwhile investment. My DH and I watched this show in utter amazement. That boy is in the same grade as my DS12 and he weighs almost 3X as much!

I didn't see them weigh the kids, but I could NOT believe that poor girl was only 4! I thought 8-9 at the youngest.:sad1:

I'm just guessing at his weight. He looks to be at least 150 to me. I was also shocked by the little girls age. It is very sad when a 4 year old looks like a 9 year old by her overweight size.

I wonder if Michelle Obama might appear in future shows?

I haven't seen the series, I always seem to be busy when it's on, but no silverware?!? Ewwwwwwwww...

West Virginia is not in the South. It might *look* like "the South", to an outsider but it most definitely is not. I grew up there and I think most West Virginians would consider it to be Appalachian - in general I think people who live there are proud, independent, suspicious of outsiders... and in its history this is the state that broke away from Virginia over the issue of slavery during the Civil War.
I know, I know to say it's Appalachian and not South might seem to be a very fine point of difference, but it's important.

And frankly, I think it was very brave for the Huntington schools to take this on. It's not JUST people in WV who have poor eating habits...walk into any high school or middle school or grade school and ask the students how many vegetables or fruit (not including that starchy favorite of potatoes) they have eaten within a day or two or even within a week. WV doesn't hold the patent on eating nasty junk, that stuff is sold everywhere all over the country.

agnes!

I was shocked watching that show last night and realized I have so much to be thankful for.

The theme this week for my pre-school class was health & nutrition. My class is fortunate that they do eat healthy and are very produce savvy. They also are allowed to use plastic fork, spoons & knives. As they were eating their whole grain bagel with cream cheese, I took the time to explain to them how to use their knife. We do this on a regular basis. They pour, cut, spread etc. on their own.

What I saw last night was pathetic and not fair to the children on many levels. :sad2:

I'm not sure what you are trying to say about the south, but this description of the people of WV could be describing Southerners, except for the suspicious part-southerners are very friendly and open to strangers. This is coming from a Yankee who moved South 25 years ago. My kids have had silverware in their schools since kindergarten.

I was disappointed in how he was treated also. It seemed like they had made their minds up before he even showed up as to how things were going to go and they never even gave him a good chance. Granted, I only saw the preview show last week so that is just my initial impression, but I would be totally shocked if much changed.

This problem is definitely in every state and in other countries too, Jamie admitted that things aren't perfect at home either, but he just wants to see change for the kids' sake. Nothing wrong with that! I know that DH and I watched the show last week together- he actually stopped what he was doing to watch it with me- it is definitely mind boggling and eye opening- which I think was the point! I mean, you can look at the lunch menu and sort of see it for yourself but to really have it pointed out like that just highlights exactly how sad the situation is.

Yeah, but the reason he started there was some country wide health survey that was done that showed the residents there to be the most unhealthy in the entire country. Considering the state of affairs country-wide, that's really saying something. The town was not just picked at random.

The thing that bothered me the most is that I felt that by presenting Jamie's meal alongside the normal cafeteria fare, it didn't really give it a fair shake. I wonder if it had been the only option how much better the participation would have been :confused3

I saw him on Oprah yesterday, and they had the DJ on as well. The DJ said that they were upset because the CDC had just labeled their town the unhealthiest in the country and they were afraid that Jamie was coming to exploit that. I think they were just defensive, you know?
