I love credit cards so much!

Merchants/recipients typically eat the PP fee when receiving payments. Friends and family shifts the fee to the sender. Someone's going to be paying the fee; can't get around that.
Hmmmm...my fellow league members and I pay each other our fantasy league fees using PP and neither sender nor receiver have to pay a fee. Is it the amount that generates the fee for the sender because I've never had to pay one on both sides of these friendly transactions?

Solidarity :rotfl: My DH is less reluctant than he was at the beginning, but he is a silent partner unless otherwise needed (which is basically calling). He is happy to let me handle everything as long as I stay on top of payments and label his cards with how to use them :) I have you guys for in depth strategy talk.

Upvote for you. My DH handles things pretty much the same way.

There's a fee if you use a credit card to send money via PP, even if you're sending it Friends and Family. I don't believe there a fee if you use a debit card/checking account/PP balance. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Are you doing it from your PP balance? Last I saw at PP:
Sending money – Personal payments (feature not available for all countries):

There are no fees within the U.S. to send money to family and friends when you use only your PayPal balance or bank account, or a combination of your PayPal balance and bank account.

There is a fee to send money as a personal payment using a debit card or credit card.

If you use a card there should be a fee. If not, tell us how :)

Thanks for this. I wasn't sure about the debit card, but I knew there was a fee using a cc.

That's it! Haven't been using a credit card.

Did you use the business status checker? https://www.barclaycardus.com/apply/cas/applications/search?PARTNERID=BUSINESS

They are probably going to need identity verification. I think I just called whatever customer service number I could find for Barclays and told them which card I'd applied for and they connected me to the right person. Be prepared to mail in front and back copies of your social security card, driver's license, and your bank account statement.
Thank you for the link to the business tracker. Alas, I was declined. It was my first time declined in 16 applications for myself over the last 24 months, 15 applications for my wife.

I felt kind of hurt at first, but I have since learned that Barclays will not approve any credit cards to residents of my state (Iowa). I knew they would not approve the Arrival card, but I thought the other cards were ok.

What type of miles are you trying to use? If it's AA.... there was a DP a couple weeks ago on FT about AA miles to book QR, availability not showing on BA but the agent was still able to book the flights for them. Also, QR is supposedly bookable on AA's website as of today for awards.

Holy moly this thread moves fast...! We have Alaska Airlines miles so it seems they book for BA and QR but QR takes 120K miles versus the 80K & 70K we have on hand which works for BA. Even with QR the availability is not there unless we want coach. I contacted my TA this morning and she said moving dates around is not an option this close (we are there Aug & Sept..!) I called when booking my flights over and they claimed they see exactly what we saw on the website... maybe that's not true?

dates, origin, destination, airline.

Two Questions:

1. I have 49 Elite Points (or whatever it is called) with Marriott. So, need 1 more night for Platinum. My SPG Card is set to renew in December. Do I get more nights when I renew or is that only a 1 time thing when approved for the card.
2. In July I upgraded my Chase Freedom to CSR (it was originally CSR then I downgraded to Freedom). I got my $300 Travel Credit right away but from what I understand the AF will be billed at the original date. That would be November. So, would I get another Travel Credit then after the fee is paid or not until after July now?

We get in at 3:30 pm on September 7th 2018 to Johannesburg South Africa and want to fly to Portland Oregon using Alaska Airline miles (I have 70K and my husband has 80K which is enough to use British Airways but not Emirates).

hmm, Johannesburg South Africa --> Portland, OR. not many routes... most i see involves KLM which is dynamic based or Delta. ExpertFlyers wont show much for Delta.
tough one. i think the most logical route would be Johannesburg --> Atlanta --> Portland.

Uh-oh. You want JNB to USA with AS miles? With AS miles your only options are BA, Cathay, Condor & Emirates. Here: https://www.alaskaair.com/content/mileage-plan/use-miles/award-charts select region of origin to region of destination to see who they allow you to fly. Other partners won’t be allowed.

I booked Cathay with AS miles JNB -LAX via HKG (HKG is their hub). Free stopover in HKG to boot when you book via AS! Use BA site to search for availability one segment at a time. They only do biz class JNB-HKG, I did re-book it for $100 fee to a First Class ticket when I saw first class open up to LAX (no discount on it though even though only half the trip will be first). AS stopovers can be as long as you want. I’m spending a week & a half in HK.

If you find availability you may need to HUCA to book it, my first rep swore up & down it couldn’t be booked, the next one was wiser and was able to find what I saw. She did quote me the price for 2 awards due to the stopover but I explained it was allowed and she looked it up and put it all in the computer and confirmed it was indeed allowed.

(Make sure you watch what the taxes & fees are on BA flights. They’re known to be sky-high for biz/first & over the last couple weeks jumped again putting them close to “insane” territory.)

ETA: CPT could be an option over JNB, flights between the 2 cities are numerous and super cheap.

thats a huge detour i think. haha. would be pretty fun at a stopover in HKG.

Thats really interesting! I haven't been seeing any rewards for Cathay or Condor at all, only Emirates and BA. We did indeed have to pay a hefty fee for Business class on our way over to Nairobi but we were happy to do so for the legroom even though it basically ended up being about the cost for an economy flight (~$800 per person just for the tax). Can't wait to have tea time upstairs on a 747!! We're actually heading over to Hong Kong and mainland China next month - we leave on the 10th and I literally just got our visas in the mail a couple hours ago!

I'm also surprised you were allowed to upgrade your award using cash... thats an option? How did you search for/find it? We have basically no further time... I'm on sabbatical but my husband is using every last ounce of his time off to go. He needs to be back at work on Monday morning.

CPT is kind of making me angry as is the tiny hop from SEA to PDX... both make it show as an upgraded award flight even though the segments are short. 20K miles for a turbo prop for 40 min that costs $20 more than an economy ticket is NOT worth 20K more points guys!!

Edited to add, I had said QR earlier but I meant Emirates... I don't know why I said that. :headache:
