I love credit cards so much!

I applied for CIC and was approved instantly on line. I am still thinking about applying for the CIP or CSP and referring DH to apply as well, but have heard it is best to wait 2-3 months before doing so. My question is, if the CIC doesn’t show on my personal credit, would it matter if I applied right away for the CSP, or even in a month? Other than, of course, having to meet both of the spend requirements?

Congrats on the approval! Chase biz instant approvals can be hard to come by so that's awesome! The main reasoning behind waiting for 2-3 months is to avoid a Chase shutdown, so not appearing too risky by acquiring too much credit in too short of a time with Chase. If you're thinking of referring your DH for the CIC and you have the ability to meet the MSR, it seems like referring him now would be a good idea, and waiting 2-3 months for your CSP app. Hopefully others weigh in with their opinions too!

So, I signed up for Reddit and was going to list the one and only card that was listed as a “refer a friend” option, which is the Disney Rewards Visa. Anyway, after I provided my information on the Chase site, it said the promotion was not available to me. Any idea why if it’s listed as a choice under the Chase “Refer a friend” list?

Try using the Chase app on your phone, not Chase pay, but the actual app. Sometimes you can get the link there. Which reminds me I need to look at this as well. I've been having the same issues with chase referrals and had tried the app a few weeks ago and didn't get anything. I need to try both again since others have been able to generate them. I don't understand why it wouldn't be available to everyone, especially since I do use the cards.

I know you asked about new cards, but I think we forget here that UR points can be redeemed for a statement credit. Of course it's not the best use of points, in the abstract, but if the airbnb works for you, I wouldn't use UR points to book a hotel. Depending on how expensive hotels are in Paris, it might cost you fewer points to use them for the airbnb.

Great point! Thank you!

Thank you! I’ll try using the app. I definitely use the card, so was surprised when it said it was unavailable.

Thank you! I was surprised I was approved that quick, but it’s been a while since I’ve applied for a credit card. I don’t know why I didn’t think to refer DH to the CIC card. That makes sense to do for now.

I found it. I just needed to login to my account.

Only concern left is hitting the minimums... CIC is 3k? spg biz i think is $5k? your looking at a total of 8k to spend in 3 months.

I would have to look at the 8k spend. Between the holidays, both my and DS's car insurance being due, and planning to buy flights and park tickets for our May WDW trip it may be doable.

I'm sorry, I'm not clear on what you mean by this:

amex biz cards dont hit your credit report(or at least it shouldnt). i wouldnt take that risk just in case(although amex does report to credit bureaus super slow).

Thanks for your help!

FYI: There is no referral for CIC.

EDIT: A good alternate plan would be to have your husband apply for a CSP or CIP now and then he could refer YOU to that card in 3 months.

The CSP sounds like a good call. Simple, annual fee waived year one and you’re familiar with the UR program already.

Imho do not store Hilton points that long. They have started some crazy dynamic changes in their rewards redemptions, they aren’t hyper-inflation status yet but doubling point costs at random hotels overnight is killer if your hotel is the one that gets hit. If that happened to you it sounds like dh might put his foot down permanently so I’d much rather dip toes in with CSP and get a Hilton closer to the potential Maldives trip. A simpler way to look at it is: the Hilton offers are at all-time highs- but so are the point costs for their hotels.

Thank you for the advice!

I can hold off on the Hilton card for now and get dh to apply for the CSP for dd!

Hi all,

You guys are so amazing. I have just tried reading the latest 10 pages in the thread, but just the acronyms are confusing me. I have no idea what is going on but am hoping for some advice!
We only use one credit card at a time, it just works easier for our budget. Last spring, I opened an Amex to get the bonus points for a pair of plane tix. Worked beautifully. Went back to old card, mainly because a lot of places don’t take Amex.
So, now I’m looking to get points for American flights in Dec. and possibly Southwest next summer. And what about the hotel points??? Does credit card hopping get you in trouble?
Again, we carry one card at a time. Might could manage two, but my brain doesn’t work that way.
Looking to maximize airline and possibly hotel points.
No business travel whatsoever. Usually hit $2500-3000 a month on the card.
We both have awesome credit scores.

TIA!

PS - if anyone wants to post a list of common abbreviations that would be super cool too

I'll just quickly reply...

First for American miles, where are you flying to/from and are you happy in economy/economy premium/business/first? This, AND a list of your credit cards and when they were opened are the most helpful for advice givers.

I am fine with economy and a checked bag. Short flight - so not a big deal. We have a Sam's Club card and a BOA Visa that have both been open for easily 10 years. I opened the Delta AMEX in April and closed it about two weeks ago. We always fly out of Charlotte. The Dec trip is to either Shreveport or Little Rock. Family is between. We are picky about getting a direct flight on this one.
Thank you for your help!

Briefly for American miles there are TWO banks (so TWO credit cards or FOUR if your significant other will participate)---Citi and Barclays. Citi currently has a stable of four personal cards -- the two best (to me) are 50,000 miles for $2500 spend in 3 months (first year annual fee waived) OR 70,000 miles for $4000 spend in 4 months (Annual Fee-AF waived in the first year). Complete details here: https://www.citi.com/credit-cards/c...?ID=american-airlines-aadvantage-credit-cards

Barclaycard could also work for you...it's pay the annual fee of $95, make ONE purchase and earn 60,000 AA miles.

You could easily get one of the Citi's cards and Barclay cards and earn 130,000 AA miles (times two if you sig other plays the game-aka P2).

I like this strategy - the second Citi card would work well to get 70,000 pretty easily. I hadn't thought about stacking them... Thanks!

I don't think multiple cards hurts your credit score IF you pay off your bills on time. My DH is reluctant to have more than 3 credit cards, I have 20-something AND my credit score is higher than his. If you carry a balance or forget a payment, then obviously that can hurt your credit scores.

There are several people who know the ins and outs of southwest so hopefully they'll chime in soon.

We do use a lot of acronyms and abbreviations---my best advice is to ask whenever a puzzling one comes up. We were all new once and there are a lot of helpful and nice people who are willing to assist.

Thanks so much for all this! We are extremely conservative, so I am totally just like your DH

Hi there and welcome!
I’m not familiar with American but if you don’t fly them frequently, you could always just book them through the chase portal using ultimate rewards (URs). There are a number of cards you could get to rack up URs.
If you spend a lot of travel and restaurants, I would suggest the chase sapphire reserve (csr).
URs also transfer to southwest easily.
Another good option is a business card, chase ink preferred (CIP). It is offering a 80k sign up bonus!
It sounds like you haven’t opened many cards in the past 24 months, correct? Can you list what you have opened?

Ok, so the chase portal - does that come from using a Chase credit card? So, those points can be used with any airline... including Southwest. Which is nice. Most of our spending is shopping, gas stations, restaurants, just usual life stuff.
Can I do a business card, for a personal card? See above for the card info. Have hardly anything going.
Thanks for your help!

I like this list for acronyms

You're in a nice spot to meet minimum spend requirements with that monthly spend. For flights in December that might be close, but American has two credit card issuers - Citi and Barclays - plus alliance partners and points transfer partners. Do you know how many points you need for the flights?

Most of the cards I see, we definitely hit that minimum requirement (MSR, yes?). I think I'll need 70,000-80,000 for the flights. Depends on what's available and how quick I can get it done.
So, alliance partners and points transfer partners? How does that work?
Thank you for helping!

You are doing Moonlight Magic right? A review of that would be appreciated. :)

Note the OP, but we attended Moonlight Magic last week. We really enjoyed it! We mostly rode rides and met characters. The lines for food were the only lines we waited in, so you might consider eating your meal before the official start. We had done the Early Morning Magic at HS earlier in the week, so we skipped the TSL rides as lines were longer than we were willing to wait (SDD>30 min, AS2>20 min) for the first 2.5 hours and then we were done. Not all of the characters were listed on the map, so keep your eyes open for others if interested

amex biz cards usually will not report of a new credit card to the 3 bureaus. so it doesnt add to your 5/24 count since chase wont see it.
i just suggest waiting for your CIC approve first just in case amex decided to change the rule out of the blue(lots of bad news seem to happen this way).

Instant approval dance
:bounce::dogdance:pixiedust::dogdance::jumping3:

That's great and doesn't happen often.

If you can meet the spend technically you can apply for the CSP at the same time. Chase allows for 2 applications in a 30 day period when applying for a personal card ( more than that and they deny the application). Due to a new anti-churning process, they are doing a manual review of applications for 2 cards in the same day and potentially closing one of them; so I would wait at least a day for the CSP personally. We don't have much data on a biz and personal in the same day since they started that as no one wants to be that data point :)

I believe that chase will see your CIC internally and would still suggest you put 2-3 months in between to just be safe.

Thank you! I may need to do that since DH doesn’t spend as much on the categories rewarded on the CIC card. The CSP or CIP might make more sense for his spending anyway.

So, tried both the app and web site and, although it posts the offer to refer a friend to the Chase Disney Visa, it says the Offer isn’t available anymore. It honestly may not have been used as much since there are currently better offers available.

What office supply stores sell Disney Gift cards? I shop a lot at Office Depot, but didn’t see any there. Anyway, someone mentioned they use their CIC to buy gift cards for the 5% cash back and I was just curious where they found them?

Does anyone have experience with online RMN awards? I made an online purchase at Macy's last week as well, and I linked to the Macy's site through the RMN website after activating an offer, but nothing is pending. I'm wondering if this is just a fail or if online offers take longer to process and go pending for some reason. If this doesn't work, I'm just going to stick with the inshore offers. It was an item I wanted anyway and was on a great discount offer, so no biggie if RMN doesn't come through. But it would be nice if it did....

I have tried 2x online and neither tracked. One was staples for GC so I didn't follow up. The other was a sams order and they fixed it via chat when I uploaded my receipt.
