AMEX Everyday Card Comments

1) Somebody recently was talking about the AMEX Everyday card and it's 0% balance transfer fee and 0% APR for 15 months (I think it was @MinnieMay)...I ended up reading DoC's article on it tonight: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/amex...-offer-10000-points-0-apy-15-months-0-bt-fee/ and it's a pretty sweet deal...especially if you can get the 25k MR point offer to show up incognito (the 25k point offer requires a spend of $2,000. For those not aware, this is basically accessing the AMEX site in an incognito google browser which MAY trigger higher offers than standard public offers. YMMV on actually getting this offer to appear. IF you CAN'T get the higher offer consider using a support link, which leads me to point 2...

2) I updated my link on DISchurners for this card - the "support" link does do the 15k MRs for $1,000 spend offer AND includes the 0% APR/ 0% bal xfer fee. I noticed that a number of people have non-working links for this card so you might want to check yours if you have one and update if necessary. Some people's were working though.

So I think I'm going to get my husband to apply for the SPG biz before the 28th. What do I need to do to refer him?

I don't know about maximizing points, but if you go through USAA Tavel portal you get some really awesome rates, even better than Costco.

And I think you can link your United Account and get some UA points.

Thx. Just looked and have to be a member. Boo.

I have mental images of some folks based on their user name and profile pics. Sometimes when the name is a mashup of letters and numbers, or abbreviations, I've created a whole new word or phrase in my mind. The fun begins when I realize I've been misreading or misinterpreting the names and photos for ages.

There is someone on the dcl forum I thought forever was a man named Doug. It is a female not named Doug.

I know someone has used their CC to pay student loan, can't remember who. Can someone tell me how that might work? Was it through gift of college GCs? And are those a no no on the spg biz?

I just sent mine through plastiq today for the first time. 3x on CIP.

Is he doing mostly local driving, or in the same general areas each week? We would do monthly rentals for our long term projects, it was generally cheaper to keep the car over the weekend (or sometimes even the extra week if we only needed 3 weeks) than doing separate rentals each week. Our main account is with Enterprise but I'm sure all the big brands have that option. Especially if he's willing to drive around in a class not in as high demand. Most locations even let us drop it off for a couple days if we were switching teams out so even if it's not local but he's in the same area each week he can drop it off and pick it back up and it'll be like his own company car :)

In state so about 200-300 miles each way at least once a week plus btwn accounts while he is gone.
I did see a monthly rental on one of the sites today and it came to $900 or so. Not a bad idea. Maybe he should present it to his boss.

I found him a rental for next week through hertz using the AAA cdp for sun-thurs for $150. That’s not too bad.

Got a letter from Amex saying my SPG Biz was approved. The only envelope I want to get from Amex is one with a card in it! 83 days left to spend $7,000.

I’m still waiting too. Check the mail daily. App’d And approved 3/1. I cringe every time I have to swipe a different card.

Oh my gosh I know what you mean! I feel like I'll never be able to spend money again without thinking about what I'm going to be "getting back!" I went to buy my daughter a Boba tea while she was at her drum lesson and they only take cash for purchases under $10. I felt robbed handing over that cash. This board is ruining my carefree spending! o_O

You can sign up for USAA! As long as you’re a US citizen, I think you qualify. I signed my sons up. They also waive the under 25 yo surcharge fo4 car rentals.

I need some input. I am sure I am over thinking this but I can’t help it!

DH got the CIP last May. He actually was the “perfect” candidate for a business card. Still has his full time job but started up a side business from our home. When he was in the initial stages there was expensive equipment to buy and the minimum spend on the CIP was met quickly. He got the CIP without problem, they never asked for any documentation or explanation.

I want a CIP now of my own (80k UR hello!) except I don’t know that I even have any “business.” No never sold on line, don’t get on eBay.

My options as I see it are:
  • Do what I did to get the Amex Business and do it as travel planning. Except you start to look at the Chase categories and that is more than a little intimidating. I don’t know how to make it fit.
  • Apply as if DH did not already have a CIP for his business. My name is on the DBA license, the city license, and on a federal licensing form he was required to do. So if it came to documentation I actually could provide. If I did that though should I do the same business name as his or change it? I could do our last name instead I guess.
  • I am a government attorney (prosecutor). So not a business BUT in theory I could do private practice and be a sole practioner on my own. I am not going too, but I guess if Chase asked I could say I wanted the option?!? This option makes me worry a bit and realistically if they denied and wanted more information I probably would just say never mind.
Open to all ideas. Or maybe I just apply as generally as possible and if I get denied then don’t fight it? Does Chase ever look at spending and see if it relates to the business? If I did get the CIP a big portion of the spending would be spent on travel of some sort so that might make the last 2 options seem weird.

Thanks.

I looked into it before b/c I keep seeing commercials on tv and it is for military/veterans and their families.

ETA: if you see something that says otherwise I’d love to know

You definitely want to do a sole proprietorship, and you can do online sales if you’ve sold anything “online” like criagslist.
I think the 3rd option is also good, since you could easily answer questions.
Good luck!!

@wendow Did you say you pay your kids' dance/activities with Plastiq? Does everything through Plastiq earn 3 points using CIP?

Thanks for the reminder I keep forgetting Usaa has a rental car.
As for plastiq I’ve been gettingv3x for each payment

Just put payments in for another loan.

Do the sole proprietor. So far they haven’t questioned any of my spending for the SW business and the CIP.

I signed up years ago. I'm not military and no family in the military except a cousin...

I think over all the CIC is a better card and seems to have more "value." But I ended up getting DH the CIP because of the higher bonus. I am going to get the CIP next, and then I think I will first try to see if I can get him the CIC in addition to the CIP. If not, then I will product change the CIP. My understanding is that you might not need to even wait a whole year to product change the CIP, but of that I am not sure. The CIC has the office store bonus for gift cards as well as gas charges. The CIP has the phone insurance and 3 times on internet. I have been happy with DH's CIP which is why I haven't immediately downgraded. Hope that helps.

Yes. Thank You. But also read somewhere (and will look into it further ) that you can get a higher CIC bonus when applying at an actual branch office..That's what i was told . But not sure if it would be a tougher application process doing it that way. In other words having to prove that you have a real business not just selling items on the side.

I read that the Disney premier visa has 0% financing on Disney trips, but what about adding on Dining plan to a DVC ressie? Just wondering because I may have to pay it off in 3 payments, so will there be interest?

It was actually my Chase banker who told me that simply selling on the side *was* a business and that I should apply for the CIP. However, to get the higher bonus, I think you need to go through a Business-type banker and I'm not sure if 'selling on the side' would meet their requirements for a business. Would be good to know if anyone wants to be a guinea pig LOL...or as they like to say on all the churning blogs...'Be the data point you want to see'. Why does that annoy me?

Bummer. Had the Turbo Tax offer on my Amex card, and in the previous years, it was a credit after paying. I hadn't had the credit post so I contacted Amex and this year, it's just a discount :( So, you have to click through their link but the discount is the same as pretty much everyone else. I paid $50 to file with TT this year. When I started with them about 10 years ago, it cost like $15. It's gradually gone up but this year is kind of ridiculous. Even though it's gonna be a hassle to move all my info, I think I am finally bailing on TT.

Lol..depending on that higher bonus amount I would think about it...
