Discover It card...worth it? I just noticed that if I apply through
Amazon I'd get $75 after making any Amazon purchase. I'm at 5/24, so I'm not burning a Chase slot.
Funny you ask that, I was just coming here to vent about my new Discover It.
This is probably due to me just being a peculiar fuddy-duddy, but I got so freaked out by Discover, I basically decided I wasn't using the card anymore and was sticking to Chase where everything always works seamlessly.
I got my Discover It card, and activated this quarter's 5% bonus, hoping that Tractor Supply Company would code as "home improvement" (it does). As a sort of test to see whether or not it would code that way, the first purchase I put on my Discover It card was to buy a $25 TSC gift card online. That was March 30th. The purchase showed up immediately as a pending transaction, and because it was pending, the category was listed as "processing" so I still wasn't sure. I took a leap of faith and went shopping with the card at my local TSC, and spent over $200 (two separate trips on the same day because I forgot something and had to go back). This was April 1st. Those transactions went to pending and then went through, and the gift card was still pending.
Yesterday, I check my Discover account in the morning before work, and see that apparently my statement is ready. They have a due date listed (May 1st) and a minimum for me to pay ($35). But what's weird is that my balance includes the in-store transactions from TSC, but the gift card that I purchased online not only isn't showing in my list of transactions, it's gone from my pending transactions too. I try to find my actual statement (pdf) and when I click, all I get is a screen telling me I have no statements in 2017. Then I notice on my account there are "running balances" (described in their little help button as a tally of all current and PAST balances) listed next to my transactions that total over $400! I have used the thing for THREE transactions total since I got it, totaling about $235. And on top of that, I keep getting a pop-up message saying "It looks like you're behind on your payments. Let us help you get back on track." (something like that). I'm like WHAT?
So, I decide to fire off a quick secure message to ask about my concerns, and don't you know I get another message saying they aren't able to accept messages at that time, so to call or use live chat. I tried several times to send the message, just to see if it was a glitch, and it never worked.
By this time, I'm starting to get irritated, but I had to go to work, so I just left it and waited until the end of the day to see what was up. By the time I got home from work, I had notification of my statement being ready, and I was able to download the pdf version of that. And I noticed the weirdness with the "running balance" was all fixed and said $0.00, which was correct. So that was good. But I notice on my statement that there is no trace of my gift card purchase, and there is still no trace of it on my account page either. I know the transaction went through because TSC has already emailed me that it's on its way!
Then I also happen to notice that despite my $209 spend on the card, my cash back earnings are $0.00 (on both the pdf statement and my account page). The heck?
I try to send another secure message and get the same pop-up telling me to "Hold that Thought" because they cannot accept messages at the moment. *sigh*
It's now the 6th of April, and the only trace of my gift card purchase is that my available balance on the card IS $25 shy of my total credit limit, so I know it's going to pop up on my balance and in my list of transactions eventually.
And I read on one of their FAQs, that cash back earnings don't post until the next statement. So the cashback I earned on this billing cycle won't post until my May statement and so forth. Which I guess is fine, but I'm used to Chase where not only can I see what I've already earned in UR, I can also see what's coming on my next statement. And it's always based on the current billing cycle. No waiting.
I don't know. It has left kind of a weird taste in my mouth about Discover. It seems messy.
