I love credit cards so much!

IIRC, you opened the CSP and CF in 9/17 and 10/17, respectively? Yes, those would automatically count towards his */24 count, putting him at 3/24 with the Chase Amazon card. He could apply for the CIP now even without removing the AUs, which would not add to his */24 and leaves him at 3/24. He could even double dip the CSR and CSP, which would put him at 5/24 if you don't have those AUs removed. Those two AUs probably won't "drop off" on their own until 9/19 and 10/19, so at some point you'll want to get them removed.

Thank you! This is what I needed :) I'm going to SM Chase to get him removed.

Thank you! Probably just a product change is a simpler way to handle it. Yes with the fraud alert either way we will need to call. When he talks to Chase he even has a secret code he has to give before they will do anything. (The person who was able to change the address on the account even had his usual personal information like mom maiden name). Maybe instead of trying to get the business card I will just refer him to get a Freedom Unlimited. With my referrral bonus that is only 5000 points less than just getting the CIC. We will still need to talk to them but should be less drama. That is good to hear about the “employee card.” I wasn’t certain how that worked.

Nice little discussion about employee cards: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/c...thread_week_of_may_01_2017/dgzmzua/?context=3

A bit off topic, but Undercover Tourist still has WDW tix at 2017 prices. They expire 12/2018. We almost certainly wouldn't be able to use them by then, would have to trade them in at WDW and pay the difference. Is this even worth the savings? And how would you make FP if you need to upgrade your tickets?

I don’t know if it would be worth it or not. Probably not. Now tickets expire the upgrading process is a lot more difficult. I think if they were in MDE you could do FP but not sure.

@CaliforniaGirl09,

Your post shows a lot of careful thought about what you want to do with what you have and gaps to fill with what you might be missing, so I really want to try to reply with the same level of thoughtfulness. I was sort of where you were a year ago, wanting to be more strategic about maximizing the return on our spending so your goal really speaks out to me.

Getting straight to one of your later points, I don’t think a great “everyday” card really exists. I’ve looked. There are lots of cards out there. Some are great for some categories of spend, but not for others. So diversify your wallet, know what the category bonuses are for those cards and what points/miles they earn, and use them accordingly. (And for spouses who are slower to the game, we’ve found putting labels with the bonus categories on each card helps.) A great everyday card in that sense is a card you put spend on when it doesn’t fit a bonus category on any of your other cards, and preferably a new card on which you’re putting that spend towards a bonus, or a card that earns you a high value currency even at 1x (like SPG Starpoints).

So you say you want to build up UR (and secondarily MR) points and maximize return on everyday purchases. You’ll need to shift your spending habits. Instead of putting your everyday spend directly on credit cards, trying to figure out which card gives you the best return when you’re at a grocery store, vs. a movie theater, vs. a restaurant, vs. a clothing store, vs. gas stations, vs. Amazon; BUY GIFT CARDS to the merchants you were going to spend money at anyway using just two credit cards that specifically earn you 5x on, essentially, gift cards.

I’ll start with what you already have in your wallet. As @calypso726 already mentioned, the Ink+ is your cash cow. It earns 5x UR at office supply stores and phone, internet, and cable tv services. Staples and Office Depot/Office Max sells a wide variety of gift cards to retailer, restaurants, gas, online services and travel, including I think Amazon and Disney Gift Cards. Go to an office supply store, buy gift cards to merchants you were going to spend money at anyway, and earn 5x UR on every dollar spent. (Another tip in your search for a great everyday card is these office supply stores often run sales or rebates on Visa Gift Cards (“VGCs”), negating the activation fee and even saving you some money on the face value of the VGCs, in addition to the 5x UR earned on the purchase. You can then spend the VGCs where you’d otherwise only earn 1x.) Alternatively, Ink+ (as well as the Chase Ink Cash (“CIC”)) earns 5x UR on e-gift card apps/websites like Gyft and Swych when you checkout using PayPal with Ink+ (or CIC) set as the payment method. Gyft, for example, sells e-gift cards to Amazon, Target, and Walmart, each at face value, but you earn 5x UR on the purchase. (Other e-gift card platforms like Cashstar also earn 5x UR when using Ink+ and CIC. Gyft, Swych, and Cashstar all earn 3x UR on the Chase Ink Preferred (“CIP”)). This tactic essentially shifts your card’s 5x earning power from office supply stores to almost everything else.

(Note that when you buy something with a gift card vs. your credit card, you are foregoing the consumer protections available on your credit card, e.g., price and purchase protection, extended warranty, charge backs and dispute processes. So consider this when purchasing goods vs. using gift cards to pay for services.)

I believe @calypso726 uses a mix of this tactic to pay her DVC dues, which are significant, and you should do this instead of direct debit! Buy Disney Gift Cards at an office supply store using Ink+, earning 5x UR; then use those Disney Gift Cards to pay DVC. (There are other ways to get better deals on Disney Gift Cards – there’s an entire thread on the subject – but Ink+ at office supply stores is probably the most direct. You could, alternatively, buy a Walmart e-gift card using one of the apps, then use the Walmart gift card at Sam’s Club (if you’re a member) to buy Disney Gift Cards that are discounted ~4%. Or you could have taken advantage of the recently expired Chase deal that earned 10x UR when you use Chase Pay with the Freedom, CSP and CSR at Best Buy for purchases – including Disney Gift Cards – up to $300. Chase Pay also had a 10x UR deal at Best Buy and Walmart .com in December 2017).

A different take on the above tactic is using the MileagePlus X (“MPX”) app. I see you have a United MileagePlus card. Great! Connect it to the MPX app to earn a bonus of 25% more United miles on any purchase from the app, whether you charge it with the United MileagePlus card or some other card that earns you better credit card rewards on your MPX purchases. As @calypso726 pointed out, I have a write up about using MPX with the right card(s) on the /r/DISchurners subreddit, so I won’t repeat it here.

You said you spend a lot on Amazon. You can buy Amazon gift cards on Gyft, Swych, and MPX, and I believe in office supply stores. Load them into your gift card wallet on Amazon and apply them to your purchases. But there’s more! You could be earning 3x TrueBlue miles by shopping on Amazon through JetBlue’s partners portal: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/earn-3-jetblue-points-per-dollar-amazon-purchases/ (I’d note however, that there have been a lot of complaints that TrueBlue points from Amazon shopping take a long time to post or don’t seem to be tracking/posting.)

Relatedly, you can use Amazon gift cards to buy third-party gift cards (excluding Amazon and Visa gift cards). This is useful because I find that office supply stores and the gift card apps don’t tend to sell grocery store gift cards. Amazon sells Whole Foods and Safeway/Albertsons gift cards, which I can easily use here in California. For grocery stores, sometimes I’ll use the VGCs bought from promos offering 5x or more, like I mentioned above.

Moving on. Yes, use shopping portals for all your online shopping! Check cashbackmonitor.com to see if your merchant has a portal and which portal is offering the best rates in cash back, miles, or points.

For United miles, have you considered joining their survey clubs and MileagePlus Dining (where you connect any card – I’d suggest the CSR for 3x UR on dining – and earn United miles on top of your credit card rewards when you use that connected [CSR] card to dine at participating restaurants)?

As for business cards, since you have a legitimate LLC, I would really suggest you consider applying for the CIP, even if it would be your fourth Chase business card. You already know about the big 80k UR bonus. (You should eventually refer DH for his own CIP and another 80k UR signup bonus, with a 20k UR referral for you.) And it won’t add to your */24 count. However, the main reason I’d recommend the CIP is because of Plastiq. Plastiq is a bill payment service that lets you use a credit card to pay almost any kind of bill with a 2.5% fee. Currently, and for some time now, the CIP has been earning 3x UR on what seems like all categories of expenses paid through Plastiq (you may want to make a small test payment to verify). It’s the only card known to do this (this could change at a later date as with anything else in this game). Since you have a business, you likely have bills to pay. You could be earning credit card rewards on those expenses and fee (possibly, 3x UR with the CIP!) and writing off the fee. Plastiq’s CEO did a AMA (Ask Me Anything) Q&A on /r/churning subreddit yesterday and noted: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/7weuyq/im_eliot_buchanan_ceo_of_plastiq_ama/du02r7y/

Plastiq sends checks and sometimes electronic payments to your payee, but has really been upping their efforts to attract small businesses by offering ACH payments and expedited delivery and tracking expected soon.

You could also pay your taxes with CIP through Plastiq, but you’d have to evaluate whether the (potential) 3x UR earned on CIP with a 2.5% fee through Plastiq outweighs the 50% MR bonus when paying with your Amex Platinum Business with a 1.87% fee through Pay1040 .com.

You can also use Plastiq to pay other expenses like tuition and student loans, utilities, rent, and YMMV with mortgages and car payments (Visa and Amex have imposed restrictions on what categories of payments Plastiq can accept on their cards).

Again, Plastiq charges a 2.5% fee for payments made with credit cards, but the 3x UR (equal to 3¢/$1) earned on the CIP would put you ahead if you decide you want to redeem your UR points (1 point = 1¢) for cash to pay off those fees. Basically you are buying 1 UR point worth 1¢ for 0.83¢. If you decide to keep the points and transfer them to the CSR, they are worth 50% more when redeeming on the UR portal, so 3x effectively becomes 4.5x worth that more than offsets the 2.5% fee. That’s a pretty good deal!

For P2P payments, Venmo earns 3x UR on the CIP. Like Plastiq, you’re negating the 3% fee with 3x UR earned.

I think this covers most of the holes in your spending and optimizes the use of the cards you do have. As for the cards you should really consider getting: the Chase Ink Preferred (signup bonus and ability to refer DH, business and other expenses through Plastiq, won’t add to your */24 count); Amex SPG Business (won’t add to your */24 count with Chase, SPG points are valuable, but current 25k Starpoints signup bonus is a lukewarm offer); and Amex Ameriprise Platinum (see my post in /r/DISchurners, but will add to your */24 count).

Please consider using a DISchurners link to spread some goodwill back to this community whenever you can. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to post. We’re here for you!

Good luck!

This was a beautifully written explanation @Lain - I will address the areas where I was tagged.

@Lain said, "As @calypso726 already mentioned, the Ink+ is your cash cow. It earns 5x UR at office supply stores and phone, internet, and cable tv services. This is exactly what we do, but will often take it a step further. Our grocery shopping is split up between Costco, Wholefoods and Publix. Ink+ codes at 5x for Staples. Staples sells Wholefoods e gift cards as well as other 3rd party merchants. Rather than physically going to Staples, we go through the Chase UR portal and purchase. Now the T&C's state that you don't get the extra bonus for going through the UR portal for gift cards. That is YMMV. We've gotten it by doing that. Either way, we get the 5x for using the Ink+ and save a trip to the store getting the extra UR portal bonus is icing on the cake.

Now, when I have to purchase an actual item other than e gift cards this is not what I do. I go through the United Mileage X app and purchase the gift card to whatever merchant on the app whether I am at home or physically at a store. If I'm at home, or at the store and can wait on the item to be shipped or do same day pick up, I then go through a shopping portal, UR, AA etc. and purchase my item through the shopping portal and pay using the gift card I just got on the MPX app, thus doing a triple stack on points.

Once again, absolutely correct on the methods to my madness and how we are able to accumulate as many points as we do. ALL of our Disney related expenses will get us a bare minimum of 5x. Once in a while, we get 10x thanks to the BB and Walmart promotions for using Chase Pay. DH and I each maxed out both promotions. The Walmart ones also gave us the opportunity to get 10X and a 4.7% savings on the Disney gift cards since we used the Walmart GCs to purchase through Sam's. I think I've posted something similar before but I will go ahead and post our Disney vacation expenses for this year alone so those who missed it or those new to the thread can see how this adds up.

DVC dues on 1300 points - $8,000 (40,000 UR points)
APs with DVC discount this year $1118 (5,590 UR points)
3 day DCL cruise and dummy date booking - $1656 (8,280 UR points)
ABD China - $15,798 (78,990 UR points)
Deposit on next ABD booking in May - $1200~ (6,000 UR points)

138,860 UR points minimum for the year. I am not even taking into account what we will spend throughout the year while at WDW. We have our reservations booked for F&W at BCV for every weekend and will likely cancel a couple of those weekends if they conflict with other fall plans. We will be there next weekend for the Festival of the Arts and Broadway dining package at Epcot. We have reservations at VGF this Thanksgiving week and are bringing both sides of the family which will be a party of 16. We will likely be at WDW a good number of times besides those trips this year. We often get FB messages from DCL cruise friends and ABD friends we've met on vacation when they are visiting WDW and ask if we can come up and meet for lunch or dinner over the weekend and we do. All of our food and any special events will be paid with Disney GCs that we purchased for 5x at least. With that kind of UR point earning you can see why I don't bother with trying to get under 5/24. Once in a blue moon I may hold off using a Disney GC to pay some of the DVC dues if the timing coincides with minimum spend on a new card I want. That is more convenience than planning though.

The MPX is my new favorite toy! I can't thank @Lain enough :worship: for pointing me in the right direction and the write up on the Dischurner thread! DH sends his thanks too!

For those who have the SPG Business card, how long did it take to actually get the card? Does it appear on your Amex personal website, or are Amex business cards separate? And lastly is it weird that I got an "approved" on the webpage after application but an email that says "we're reviewing your application ?"

I honestly don't remember since it was a few years ago. But it isn't like Chase cards where it appears automatically or on a separate log in. Once you receive the card, log into your Amex account online and add the card.

How does one get invited to the Dischurner's secret group?

create a reddit account, message either @Albort or @SouthFayetteFan with reddit username.
@Albort...you forgot to mention the secret handshake, secret password, and having to wire me and you $200 USD...haha jk!

Our group isn't really "secret" lol but it is private, safe and free from judgement and negativity. We'd love to have anybody on the DIS join whether a serious churned, newbie, or even a non-churner just interested in learning more from the sidelines.

I need some help determining which card(s) to get next. I’ve been playing this game wrong with AU instead of 2 player mode and trying to get it cleaned up. I’ve requested I be removed as AU on Chase Freedom and CSP. Once I am removed, I’ll be at 4/24. My wife is at 3/24.

My top priority is the SW CP, as we are planning on Hawaii in summer 2019 when SW is flying there. We already have the SW Premiere in my wife’s name and me as AU (more than 2 years old).

The other card I have my eye on is the CIP, which we do not currently own. I like the idea of 5x on our outrageous AT&T bill, along with being more strategic with gift card purchases.

So, we’ve got 3 open slots between us immediately with it being close to another year before any more slots open up. Does her already having the SW Premiere complicate this at all? Is it as easy as her applying for the SW Plus and Business to get our CP and me applying for the CIP? Should we cancel the Premiere once the new SW cards are open?

Is this the best strategy or does anyone have any better ideas to maximize points or different cards? Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm not much help when it comes to the SW cards, but I wanted to clarify about the CIP.

The Chase Ink Preferred ("CIP") will not earn 5x UR on AT&T (Internet, cable and phone services) or gift card purchases. It will earn you 3x UR on your AT&T bill when paid directly and on the gift card apps I mentioned upthread (Gyft and Swych) when checking out via PayPal with CIP as the payment method, but not at office supply stores. It will get you a 80k UR signup bonus, and potentially 20k UR when you refer someone! The CIP carries a $95 AF, not waived the first year.

The Chase Ink Cash ("CIC") earns 5x UR on internet, cable and phone services (e.g. AT&T) and at office supply stores (where you can buy gift cards) up to $25,000 spent, and 2x UR at gas stations and restaurants up to $25,000. It also earns 5x UR on Gyft and Swych using PayPal checkout. However, the CIC has only a 30k UR signup bonus, and currently no ability to refer. The CIC does not have an AF.

A lot of us would recommend going for the CIP for the signup bonus, then product changing after a year (or thereabouts) to the CIC for the bonus categories and no AF.

Hi guys, I need some sophomore advice. I opened the SW plus and premiere cards last June to earn the CP and am ready to close them well before the AF's hit. Do I have to call Chase to close these accounts? I also have the CSP which I want to pc to the CFU. I assume I have to call as well?
Many have already said this but I'll reiterate to definitely wait until you get your 6k and 3k anniv. points before cancelling. Additionally I would try to call and get a retention offer before cancelling. Do 1 card at a time (not on the same call) and say something like you aren't sure it's worth keeping the card due to the AF. They may offer to waive the fee or give you additional SW RR points on top of the ones you already got. If they don't offer anything you can still cancel them.

I recently got the Chase Marriott Biz, because I have a specific use in mind for those Marriott points, and I also wanted to test the waters on a Chase biz card since I'm relying on a very modest side eBay selling business as my business. And I didn't want to impact my 5/24 status, since I'm currently at 7/24. I plan to apply for the CIP later this year (Oct.) when I get back to 4/24. I obviously want the bonus, but I like the 3x earn on certain categories I am only getting 1.5x on now. so my current plan is to keep the CIP. However, I also want the CIC for the 5x at office supply stores so I can up my gift card game. I'll go back to 4/24 in Jan. 2019, so thought I would apply for the CIC then. But now I'm starting to worry that Chase might not approve me for a third biz card since I don't have an EIN, etc. Is it possible to product change the Marriott Biz to the CIC? I suspect not with a co-branded card but wanted to make sure. If that doesn't work, what about offering to cancel the Marriott Biz with the explanation that my business spending needs have changed? For those with both the CIP and CIC, which would you keep if I end up having to decide between the two if I can't get approved for the CIC separately and can only get it by product changing the CIP?

You cannot product change A Marriott card to CIC. I can't answer your question on which I'd rather have BUT hopefully you can just get approved for one and don't have to worry about it. ;)

Thanks for the confirmation about product changing Marriott biz. i"m pretty sure I can get approved for either CIP or CIC and will go for CIP first because of the big bonus. The question is whether I can get approved for both (which would make 3 Chase biz cards total), since I'd really like to have both in my wallet.

Great job! I've mostly done the southwest credit cards and am happy with all the free flights we've received from them! That definitely has to be a rush!

If I may ask, what hotels did you stay in? Like I stated above, we've done well with Southwest flights, but I haven't really delved into redeeming credit card points for hotels.

The few I've looked at seemed like the points weren't worth much, so I didn't end up looking into it much more.
how many points/miles does it cost for a ticket to Orlando on southwest, say from Boston or providence

Sorry lol - I meant get approved for both haha.

The points cost varies greatly on Southwest. It can depend on the actual day you are travelling, how far in advance you book, whether you book a nonstop, what time of day you are going.

The southwest website is very easy to check points or prices on. Just log in and select book flights, and without having to book, it will give you what it has. It is open for booking or checking, up until August, if I remember correctly. Go play around with it a bit and you may be amazed!

You don't actually have to even login to check points prices.

Flights are available to book through 8/6/18 currently. And just for those that might be interested the schedule opens up through October 1st on Thursday Feb 15th. The newly released flights usually become available to book around 8am Eastern time that morning.

I'm attempting to update the roll call on DISchurners. If you are Reddit User doitall926 or Reddit User niceish1 can you either send me a quick PM on here or respond to this thread so I can update that list?

Thanks!

I'm getting our new SoCal plans settled this morning. My other idea for our Thursday was the Queen Mary in Long Beach. We stayed on it two summers ago but due to some other things on the trip, we didn't get as much time to see the ship as we had planned.

So we're going to fly into LAX for about 1400 points less than San Diego. I can get a car rental from LAX for $150-$200 less than one from San Diego was. We're going to stay on the Queen Mary that night. It's coming up on third party sites and the UR portal as $127, which is pretty low compared to usual. I'd use the Hotels.com gift card but that's the one third party site saying it's sold out, of course, so I'm using UR points (8398). It's a refundable rate though, so I'll probably keep an eye on it in case it opens up on Hotels.com and then I can use up my gift card, but for now we'll say that this is covered by maxing three cards with the BB Chase Pay promo :)

So we'll hang out on the ship Thursday morning/early afternoon before heading to Fallbrook for the wedding activities. This was part of why we decided not to do DLR this day, besides the fact that it works out perfectly to see the QM again. Even though it was only $30 more total to add another day at the parks, we aren't sure if we will be asked to get to Fallbrook earlier to help out with things, so we were looking at 6 hours max in the parks, and less if we needed to get there earlier. Also, I feel like I've read there's a Disney outlet or two in the LA area? Maybe I can talk DH into stopping... Does anyone know anything about that or if it's worth it? Going to use the Hotels.com gc for the hotel, a fancy Econolodge that is next door to the wedding venue.

Wedding is Friday night, nothing is going on for it Saturday morning, so we'll head up to DLR. Check into the Hyatt House (12k points per night, transferred from UR) and head to the parks. I bought our tickets last night at around 11pm, so I saved $40 on 4 day PHs. I added MaxPass, hopefully that was a good use of my Chase Pay GCs :confused3 I was feeling a bit of FOMO in the moment. It's been almost two years since we've been to DLR, so it will be interesting to see changes and how SW is coming along. Then we've got a flight out of SNA late on Tuesday :sad1: I picked this flight up for only 3730 RR points, and plan on ubering to SNA. BIL and fiance had plans to weekend in Vegas after wedding because their Hawaii honeymoon isn't until this summer, but that might be falling through so they might join us at DLR for the weekend. I think I might look for some Just Married buttons on ebay if they do :)

Is there a place where I can post a referral link for the Chase Freedom? I can get $100 cash back for every person I refer up to $500 and they get a $150 bonus after spending $500.
