I love credit cards so much!

Just got the Barclaycard Aviator Red, annual fee is $95 but it comes with 40,000 American Airlines miles after first purchase. I have 50,000 miles from the Citi AA a couple months ago and will be taking a couple trips domestically this year. I wanted to make those milesaaver business/first tickets but didn't have enough miles to cover my trips. Now I do (or will)! Basically I'm hoping I just upgraded 2 round trip domestic tickets for $95. Fingers crossed the right airports show up on the reduced milesaaver award charts now...

It depends on how you value the points. Here is TPG's point valuation http://thepointsguy.com/2016/11/november-2016-monthly-valuations/

If you by his values or something close then the UR points you have are worth $252 and the Marriott ones are worth $245. While UR points are far more valuable they are also easier to earn through bonus spend across multiple cards. As straight cash value the UR points at a minimum should be valued at 1.25 if you have the CSP and 1.5 if you have the CSR. Since you are considering using the UR points as cash and I am thinking you have the CSR then the hotel is $180. In this situation I'd actually use the UR points because the redemption value on the Marriott points is far less. At a minimum I would earn .01/$ for spending on the Marriott card. Therefore, I wouldn't touch those points unless I am getting at least .01 value for them and I would use the valuation @Albort used.

Personally, if using the CSR travel credit was an option then I'd go that route and earn points for the stay. Another option would be to see if that hotel was a cat 1 - 5 and my annual free night certificate for having my Marriott card was available for the stay. This is mostly because I prefer using UR points as miles to book seats in first so I value them pretty high. The thought of using them for a hotel stay makes me cringe :scared: but I have done it before especially when trying to cut costs :teacher: on what would otherwise be a very expensive vacation. For example, in 2015 we went on the Frozen Disney cruise that left out of Copenhagen and went to Norway, Iceland, Scotland and finished off in Dover. That cruise was the most expensive cruise we'd ever booked, plus we added the pre-cruise Adventures by Disney in Copenhagen trip to it. Now, we used discounted Disney gift cards that also racked up 5 UR points/$ and were loaded to the DVA account to pay for both but was still a lot of money out of pocket. We were getting into Copenhagen a day before the ABD trip and wanted to stay at the same hotel which was the Tivoli. We used UR points to pay for the Tivoli which saved us about $350. I would have done it even if the redemption value was only .01/point or less. I simply didn't care and just needed to cut costs where I could. We decided to stay in London over the weekend after the cruise. The St. Ermin's hotel was going for 40K Marriott points/night or $350/per night and taxes and fees would have likely pushed past the $400 mark. We used the Marriott points. We couldn't use the free night cert since it was a cat 8 hotel. Even if we weren't getting .01/point for those Marriott points I would have used them. My point of all that is simply that how anyone uses or values their points is subjective and sometimes depending on the circumstances the value of a point won't even come into play. I hope that helps :goodvibes
Thanks for the advice, I'll use the UR points and save my Marriott points. I have used almost all of my 2017 travel credit booking 3 separate car rentals for 2017 trips...

Does anyone else know that you can book "activities" through the UR portal? I am getting ready to use 13,000 UR to book Kennedy Space Center tickets for my family of 4. I'll still have over 90,000 UR points left. I saw Universal tickets and Legoland as well. Thoughts? Good use of UR?

I don't have the Marriott card and the hotel is a category 7. Hope that clarifies. I went ahead and cancelled the Marriott stay booked on Marriott points and used my UR points to book. I'm also Marriott Gold through me having the AMEX platinum card so I should be ok.

I noticed this. I'm planning a week at universal in August. But the hotel and flights will eat up my points. I think the tickets looked a little higher than what you would pay elsewhere.

Universal was 50,000 points for my family of 4.. KSC is $200 on the UR portal but $180 plus tax booking directly. So not necessarily cheaper but convenient, if you don't want to use cash.

as noted before..... how YOU value your points may differ from how I value them... I used to agonize WAY more about actual value (like the TPG calculator) then I just started booking what I needed with my clear goal in mind -travel more/spend less. For me,that sometimes means using points for 'less value' redemptions. But since they provide what I want, they have huge value to me! That said, I once used a combo of UR points plus some SWA points to stay at Universal Hard Rock Hotel and play in the parks for the weekend.... for free.totally worth it for us! I would never pay oop to stay there....

You are so right!!! Thank you!

I think with devaluations happening so frequently, it's smart to USE your points. So I'm using mine :). It may not be the BEST value but it works for me.

I actually saw this today when I was making plans for our trip to Copenhagen. We have a free day and I want to schedule a trip to see Kronborg Castle (the castle in Shakespeare's Hamlet). I found a tour on Viatour (a nice place for booking independent tours) and then noticed that the exact same tour is available under the activities section in the UR portal. I am leaning towards booking that way since it would mean $0 OOP for this additional part of our trip.

Can't help you with a referral as I don't have the SW cards. If no one has PM'd you with a referral yet then there are other ways to find the higher offers. I usually will apply off of a link from whichever travel hacker blogger has had the most helpful information for whatever I am trying to figure out how to accomplish. So I rotate bloggers and their application links tend to have the highest bonus offers. Another way is to go to Flyer Talk and search for the current offers in the credit card thread. Hope that helps.
Do you know if they will honor my elite status at Marriott if I book my room through the UR portal?

They should. Your status isn't affected by where you book your reservation. I also have Elite Gold at Marriott (thanks SPG gold!) and booked our Copenhagen hotel nights at a Marriot hotel. One with SPG points that I transferred for Marriott and one night through the UR portal. Both reservations show up in my Marriott account.

Awesome. Thanks so much !

I found a much better use for my Marriott points..the Marriott Marquis in Times Square! Rooms are $500 plus a night on the Saturday in July we are going and I used the points I saved from the Baltimore booking to book it for my 40th birthday trip. We were going to come home the same day but not now :)! Thanks to all for your sage advice. I used 45,0000 Marriott points.
