I love credit cards so much!

Got rid of my Disney visa since I never use it. I'm eyeing the csp..but not until end of January..I have summer camp to pay for which is 3/4 of the 4K spend.

What do the numbers/24 mean? I apologize for asking what I'm sure is a dumb question.

Chase will only allow you to have 5 new cards (of any brand) within a 24 mo period. Though usually Chase will not admit they have this rule.

Does the entire $4,000 need to be spent to get the credit? I don't remember, but I was going to do the rest of our spend on our trip in mid-December. I've got about $800
Left to reach the $4K spend, I *could* do it before our trip but don't really want to

I spent money on travel expenses and was credited $300 on my CSR well before I ever hit the 4k spend.

Can anyone post again what the 'break even' point is for keeping the CSR? I know I won't meet it b/c we don't eat out much nor travel much but I have a family member getting the card and they eat out quite a bit. Also, is there another card that doesn't have such a high annual fee but also earns 3x or more on dining? TIA!

@wendow here is the language on the travel credit:
$300 Annual Travel Credit: A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for purchases in the travel category, up to $300 in statement credits annually ("annually" means the year beginning with your account open date through the first December statement date of that same year, and each 12 billing cycles starting after your December statement date through the following December statement date). Purchases are when you, or an authorized user, use a card to make purchases of products and services, minus returns or refunds. Buying products and services with your card, in most cases, will count as a purchase; however, the following types of transactions won't count: balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, overdraft advances, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable. We do not determine whether merchants correctly identify and bill transactions as being of a certain type. For more information about Chase rewards categories, see www.Chase.com/RewardsCategoryFAQs. Statement credit(s) will post to your account the same day your travel category purchase posts to your account and will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles. Qualifying purchases made by authorized users on your account will be included in the $300 Annual Travel Credit. Maximum statement credit accumulation for the Annual Travel Credit is $300 annually. The Annual Travel Credit will be issued for the year in which the transaction posts to your account, through your December statement date. For example, if you pay for baggage fees, but the airline does not post the transaction until after your December statement date, the cost of the baggage fees will be allocated towards the following year's Annual Travel Credit maximum of $300.

My understanding is my travel credit for this year has to be spent before 12/7 which is around when my December statement will be generated.

@wendow...I think the "break even" depends on whether one takes into consideration some of the credits assigned.

For instance, the annual fee is $450. However, if you utilize the travel fee reimbursement of $300/yr, it is effectively $150. So at that level I'd consider the "break even" anything over $5000. If for some reason, the travel credit of $300 wasn't utilized and it was merely for dining (3%) then the number is $15000...or if it's a combination of dining plus "everything else" then obviously that depends on the proportion of 3% purchases to 1% purchases.

Of course some individuals take into account the 104,000- 112, 000 Ultimate Rewards (to earn the bonus $4,000 must be spent in the first 3 [I believe] months so depending on how the spend is rewarded there is a variance) which in straight cash is worth $1040-$1120...that would cover the annual fee for a couple of years+ if used on a cash basis. I'm still not sure how I'm going to utilize my points (now closer to 150,000) so I leave out that valuation but it is a consideration during the initial offer (100,000 is a lot, to me!).

In my case, I utilized the $300 travel credit plus the Global Entry Refund ($100). So this year's AF is essentially $50 for me. So yes, I easily spend $1667 on dining and travel. Next year it will need to be greater than $5,000 but since I have another ABD next winter that will be easily met :)

Hope this made sense and helped!

Is it a certain amount that has to be spent on a travel? I've got about $1K so far in travel expenses but haven't seen the $300 credit pop up yet.

Ahh wait I see what happened.they didn't count my ticket purchase as travel... that's why I haven't seen the travel credit yet. I thought by buying my fix through the resort it would pop up as a resort/travel charge but apparently not... :(

break even point i would say for CSR is $150.($450 AF - $300 travel credit). to redeem $150 Statement credit is 15k points. divide that by 3 is $5000. U would need to spend over $5k(@ 3x category) to break even. (at least thats how i think it should be).
You can also say, u earned 100k points at the beginning, u can use that to cover your AF fee a few years over.
edit: doh, someone answered it already.

Would you consider a cheaper Annual Fee? best card for dining besides CSR would be the costco card. 4x gas, 3x dining and travel, 2x costco. AF is just costco membership $55.

Freedom & IT card have 5x categories in dining. that would cover half of the year.

Has anyone called about the CSR travel category? For some reason, my airport parking is not coded as travel, even though several other kinds of parking charges have coded as travel. Wondering whether Chase is open to making adjustments.

That's how I figured out what had happened. We just went to a concert the other night, and the parking garage fee coded as travel, and I immediately saw the credit to my account. I'll give them a call tomorrow and ask, cuz I was really hoping my park tix would code as travel since I bought them from the resort...

Break even point is usually figured for the cost/benefit between the Sapphire Preferred @ $95 vs the Sapphire Reserve @ $450. Since the $300 travel credit is straight forward, the CSR is essentially considered to be a $150 per year card. Therefore, the difference is an additional $55 per year to earn 3x UR points vs 2x UR points. Break even will depend on how you value your UR points. Lucky from One Mile at a Time values them at 1.7 cents per point so he calculates break even at $3200 per year in dining and travel. The Points Guy values UR points at 2.1 cents so his break even is $2619.

I haven't had it happen on my CSR but in the past I have been able to get the extra points when something didn't code as I expected. It all depends on how the merchant has it coded.

I do have the Costco card. I was asking this question for a family member. She does not have a Costco around her and therefore, is not a member. I wonder if she could join Costco online and then get the Costco card, b/c you are right, it is a great card for dining and gas (her biggest expenses). Going to look into that. THanks for mentioning!

Just went to apply for the IT card and it's gone, saw your post about it going away on the 14th and was hoping it might still be available at 5AM but no luck. I will check out Freedom and Costco, thanks.

Got an offer from Chase for up to 150,000 Marriott points for spending $30,000! Of course I passed on it.

Our latest CC addition: Hilton HHonors Amex. 75,000 points after $1,000 spend using a referral, No AF. DH has a company card that he has to use for travel (boooo), but he usually stays at Hiltons so he's been accumulating points through the rewards program. It made sense to get the credit card for the points and then stick it in a drawer aside from any promotions they run. I'm still going for the Southwest CP next month.

Calypso, I wanted to quote you since I'm fairly certain you know the answer to my question. If I shop through the Chase Rewards portal with my CSR can I also get ebates on the purchase (I hit the ebates button on my screen after I have gone through the Chase portal)?

Chase has been super nice to consumers... 70k CSP has surfaced, 80k Ink P, 100kCSR. new business card coming soon too...
