My DS is also 9. He has an old iPhone with no service so it works like an iPod. He is always wanting to walk to/from school and other places, plus sports and camp, etc. I’ve been considering adding a line to his phone but it became more of an issue last week. My mom watches him the days he is not at camp. She decided to take him grocery shopping to a store she hasn’t been to in a year or more. So I’m at work, and DS calls me on Grandma’s flip phone and says they are lost.

He tells me what street they are on, I tell him what street they should be on and which cross street and he hangs up. I wait a couple minutes and try to call back. No answer for over 10 minutes while I’m having a heart attack. At least if he had a phone I could track his location or text him. If I went looking for them, I’d have no idea where to start. Grandma probably also needs a smart phone but she doesn’t go out much and forgets to charge her phone anyway (plus she’d need a giant version to be able to read it)
