The southwest change is exciting to us because we live near a hub for them but would never book due to their seating (just causes me anxiety). I know some liked it though!

I had to book a work trip right after the CIP came, spend I'll get paid back for is my favorite spend haha

we took a tour to Montserrate which was gorgeous

also Park Guel and Catedral Famiglia.

didn't see many bars where we were (gothic quarter) and restaurants we jut looked at menus and picked one!
We were only in Barcelona for one full day before a cruise and were seriously jetlagged but we did a tour of Familia Sagrada and Park Guell. Simply amazing.

Before the deadline of 7/31, I am planning to apply P-1, P-2, and P-3 each for one of the Amex Hilton + FNC cards. Also, P-2 wants to apply soon to get one of the CIP cards for the 120K. Hopefully, I can get the 40K referral before that ends on Sep 3rd. So, my question is... how will getting an Amex personal card now impact the CIP application? How long should P-2 wait before applying for the CIP? Maybe Amex won't do a HP (P-2 has one Amex biz card) but the card will show up since it is a personal card.

Assuming the Hilton card doesn't put anyone at 5/24, then it has no impact. Chase is not inquiry or new card sensitive (outside of 5/24).

Hi...:flower3::tiptoe:(insert timid entrance into thread here....)

I am looking to replace my SW Visa card (not sure specifically which one it is, but it has a $69 AF) with another card that will offer the best rewards that I can redeem towards flights on ANY airline. I have used up almost all of my RR points and so it is really time to cut the cord with SW. I have no issue with them, but because I always seemed to have RR points, it was always cheaper to fly SW. Now that my points are almost gone, I would like to get a CC that will allow me to at least consider other airlines.

I read the stickies so I am going to try and provide as much info as I can....
First, I have not applied for any credit CARDS in the past 24 months.
Second, I currently have the following cards (monthly average spend included)
  1. Apple Card ($3500)
  2. Chase Disney Visa ($1000) *this is the card with the longest history...21 years.
  3. Chase Disney Visa ($500) *This card can be closed after my next trip in October, once I use the points
  4. SW Visa *$69 AF ($1500)
  5. AMEX Blue Sky ($0...only use it if there is a reward available)...second-oldest card with a 20-year history
  6. Target RedCard ($300...not sure if I was supposed to include this one or not:rolleyes1)
  7. BestBuy Visa (There is currently a balance of about $1200 on this card at 0% that will be paid off before the end of the promo) *This card is only used to make major purchases (currently paying off an iPad and iPhone) and only at 0% paid in full before interest accrues.
Third, my DH is not a fan of the number of CC's we have. We accumulated $50K in CC debt due to an uninsured disaster at our home in 2013. We used some of his retirement fund to pay it off in its entirety in 2018. Since then, we have never carried a balance and pay everything in full every month. That being said, DH is the primary "shopper" in the household and he will only use the Apple Card. I am not willing to close the bolded cards. I would prefer to keep the AMEX, but if there is a valid reason to close it, I am open to suggestions.

  • What airport(s) do you typically fly out of? GRR is about 10 minutes from home. DTW is a little over 2 hours and we would spend the night before any flight to avoid any driving delays/mishaps
  • Do you have a preference of Frequent Flyer program? No...I have <500 Delta SkyMiles and about 2500 RR points.
  • Does SOUTHWEST Airline service your airport? Yes, both GRR and DTW, but nothing non-stop and usually terrible times
  • Do you have a Hotel Rewards program preference? Marriott/Bonvoy, but not enough travel to justify a co-branded card
  • Do you currently have travel points or miles in any program? *See above*
  • What at your specific goals for churning credit cards? I don't really want to "churn". I just want to have a dedicated card that I can use to put the rewards towards my airfare expenses.
  • When do you plan to take these trips? I typically take one trip per year to WDW and/or HHI. DH and I do not travel much as I am still working full-time. We both consider travel as a "luxury" so I make sure that we have the money in the bank for the trip BEFORE we travel. I try to maximize my "cash" cost by utilizing as much "free" money (from rewards/rebate programs) as possible.
  • Who does your travel party consist of? Typically, I am travelling to WDW with my friend. Sometimes, I will go with one of my daughters, but now that they are 21 (working full time) and 18 (starting college in the fall), I don't see more trips with them in the future...at least none that I am paying for:laughing:.
Another tidbit to add...I have a DVC membership (100 AKV, 50 HHI) so lodging is not an expense that I have to worry about when paying for my trips. When we travel to HHI (once every three years), we stay in Marriott properties along the way since we drive. I also make a few overnight trips to Detroit during the summer to watch my Tigers play baseball so I earn a few rewards with those stays. I have never reached 10 nights in a year.

I do not particularly want an AF, but since I would be replacing a card that has a $69 AF, I would consider it *IF* the benefits are worth it to me.

If it matters, my credit score is >800...

Chase's 5/24 goes by the date an account was opened not by when it falls off a credit report, right?

Welcome! No reason to be timid here!
I would say the most flexible card for your needs would be the Capital One Venture X. On the surface, the AF might look high ($395). That comes with an annual 10K points reward worth $100 and a $300 travel credit to use through their travel portal. You earn 2x points on all purchases. Currently, the SUB is 750K points worth $750. Points are easy to redeem for travel purchases including flights, hotels and rental cars. You charge the flight to your card and erase the purchase. For example, a flight that costs $250 would require 25,000 points to cover the cost.
If that AF scares you, maybe look at the regular Capital One Venture rewards. $95 annual fee, similar earning and redemptions.

:welcome: Everyone is friendly here….maybe look into the Chase Sapphire Preferred…it does have a $95 annual fee but you receive 60,000UR points after a $4,000 spend…the points can be transferred to certain airlines to book flights….if you open one and you can send DH a support link so you get additional points and he can also earn 60,000 points
Others are more familiar with other cards and can offer suggestions on those

How long are folks waiting after closing INK card before applying to others? I feel like the denials people were seeing this year have me worried. I used to close one and then reapply in a few days

We booked a Delta basic economy tix for DD from MCO-LGA for 9000 miles on the morning of her Great Grandmother's 100th birthday dinner.

GGM passed away yesterday.:sad1:

The funeral will now start before she arrives and the birthday dinner will now become a celebration of life and memorial dinner after the burial. I forget the name of the meal that follows the burial.

In any case, I need to buy DD a new ticket to fly from MCO-HPN on JetBlue the day before and she will just have to ask for an additional day off from work.

Are the 9000 miles used for the Delta basic economy flight refundable? I know that economy basic is not refundable with cash. We are willing to write it off if we have to but 9000 miles back would be nice.

TIA

Mine too, but my company finally made me get a corporate card and book everything with it. I was trying to fly under the radar, but policy is more than 3x a year you need a company card. I still get the airline and hotel points but not cc. :(

I agree with @palhockeymomof2. I would start with Chase and earn URs which are very flexible. The CSP (Sapphire Preferred) the @palhockeymomof2 speaks of is a great travel card with a low AF. The URs transfer to many travel partners. It is my preferred travel card (not used often as I use other UR cards more and then transfer to my CSP.) But we can fill you in on this after you meet the SUB for the CSP should you decide you want to begin with that one.

Replying to you again because I reread your post and noticed you said that you do not really want to churn and do not really want an AF. I feel the same. Here is my (non-churning) strategy:

I have 6 main cards (and a few "sock drawer" cards). I personally don't want to manage more.

CSP - $95AF - I use it very little, but transfer URs from other Chase cards (below). Once the URs are on this card, they can be used for travel. I just opened another one in DH's name(with my support) because there was an elevated SUB. Once my anniversary hits, I will downgrade mine and at some point, hopefully with an elevated SUB, have DH support me to churn this one- then downgrade his. These are the only "churns" I have done/plan to do in about 7-8 years.

CFF - I use this for the 5x rotating categories.

CFU - 1.5x on all spend. Mainly got this for DH since he doesn't want to be bothered thinking about what card to use and doesn't want more than one CC in his wallet. URs also transferred to the CSP. Most of our spend goes on this card.

Amex Everyday - I use this mainly for groceries and a few other things. The MRs transfer to some different travel partners than the Chase URs. I have upgraded to the Preferred with a $95 AF once in the past and then downgraded again after a year because they were offering a nice bonus. I may do this again at some point if the bonus is worth it.

Discover IT - cash back card. 5x rotating categories. I only use this on the rotating categories. I use the cash back to pay the AFs on my other cards. When it builds up beyond that - travel cash.

I also have the no AF Disney and no AF United cards. They get used if there is a good offer on them or if there are 5x categories. So basically only a few times a year.

I just opened a Disney visa account. I have a major purchase to make next month. There is a 300.00 reward you get with over 1,000 purchase in first 3 months right? How long does it take to show the reward?

I'm sorry for your loss.

Thank you. I think everyone is just glad that she is at peace now. She deteriorated quickly at the end. No one wanted her to suffer longer than she had to. No one can say that she didn't live a good, long life already at 99 years and 358 days.

I appreciate the link. Looks like we will just let the 9000 miles go. I'm not sure that I have the energy to call or contact CS, especially since we are not re-booking on Delta. I am glad we paid with points and not $ originally. Lesson learned that maybe the lowest fare isn't always the way to go.
