I love credit cards so much! v5.0 - 2022 (see first page for add'l details)

I’m up early on trying to finish off my Christmas shopping. Not seeing many good deals on things I want to get the kids. Kind of putting me in a bah humbug kind of mood.
It could also be that the two little kids were wild yesterday and should probably be on the naughty list at this point. Plus DD18 has been filled with teenage attitude and should also be getting a lump of coal. However, their Christmas lists keep getting longer and longer.

I ordered DH AirPods using Chase points. Didn’t see any great deals for the ones he wanted. Just placed an order on Amazon to finish up 90% for the kids. Just waiting on 2 more things to see if the price drops before Xmas.

I also want to get a few ornaments at Shopdisney but don’t want to pay shipping and it doesn’t add up to $75. I hate that shopdisney is so stingy with the free shipping promos. I probably would have spent hundreds of dollars in small orders in the last few weeks but hate paying shipping so instead spent nothing.

We are heading to WDW this Sunday. Really hoping this trip goes well. I am on the fence about adding on more dvc points and its all depends on how it goes. Can knock of my CIC MSR in one swipe if I decide to go ahead.

Going to open a Southwest account today. It looks like the most expensive one is the best deal--any thoughts?
Also, someone suggested I open a second one tomorrow and I'm wondering if I should refer P2 instead (we have 2 kids).

It's probably too late to answer your questions, but just in case you didn't already apply, here's my two cents. I like the Plus card because of the lower fee and the 2 free EBCI's. It works for my situation. Some prefer the 4 free upgraded boardings and $75 credit with the Priority. I'm not sure if you're asking about two different people applying for cards or doing the modified double dip, MDD, where one person applies for a card one day and then a second card on the next day. Usually, the advice is not to plan this for a weekend in case you need to talk to someone at Chase to push the app through. If you get instant approval, or if you'd rather not talk to anyone anyway, then it doesn't matter. If you already have a SW card, then have P2 use your link for both apps of the MDD. If you don't have a SW account, considering using someone's link from our dischurner's group. If you're each opening new accounts, then once your account is open, you can generate a link for P2 to use. I hope this makes sense. :)

I used a friends referral link for the $149 one (oh well) and signed up this morning. So do I open a second one myself or refer P2? Can I use another referral or should I wait to get my own referral link? Sorry for all the questions. TY!

If you are trying to get the RR points to get a companion pass you need to open the second card…if going for another personal card it needs to be approved tomorrow…if a business card in 30 days…just make sure you wait to complete the MSR in 2023 so you have the pass for 2023 and 2024

Ok so I should apply for a second personal card tomorrow. If my statement date is Dec 4, does that mean that December spending won't show til January so will count towards the companion pass?

Hi all (: my name is Kirstyn and I would love some advice on getting a new card / whether it’s worth it. My two main goals right now would be to find a card that would allow me a ~$3.5k purchase of a couch but I figure that’s a long shot or a card that could help us pay off our plane tickets for next year (see below for more info).

Any advice would be appreciated (: this thread is a bit too big of a beast for me to really accurately parse through.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions!

Cards in the last 24 months:
8/22: Synchrony Bank (Care Credit)

Monthly amount of spend:
Our joint credit card is anywhere between $1.8k-$4k/month. We would rather it be on the lower side but I think that’s a dream that inflation has thrown a wrench into
My personal card I try to keep between $600-$1k/month

Do we pay off every month?
With the exception of a chase plan here or there to handle unexpected expenses yes. The care Credit we do not as we opened it specially to pay for a very large unexpected vet bill but it doesn’t gain interest if we pay within 12 months and we plan to have it paid off by then

Airports:
-Usually fly Delta
-Open and interested in frequent flyer programs but would probably like to stick with Delta
-Not interested in flying southwest
-Don’t have hotel rewards and not really interested as we barely ever stay at hotels aside from onsite Disney.
-Currently have travel miles on Delta but only about 2k
-I’m not sure what churning means sorry. But if it just means what we’re interested in gaining by opening a new credit card it would be:
A. To help pay off Disney vacations
B. To help pay for flights to Disney
C. To save money so we can afford some of our loftier goals (Joybird couch, DVC)
-Our next Disney trip is Nov. 2023, but after that we probably won’t go for 2+ years.
-On our upcoming trip our travel party includes extended family (mom&dad, brother, grandparents(2), aunt, myself, DH) but typically it would just be myself & DH

Cards we currently use:
We both have chase freedom cards as our personal credit cards, we have a joint credit card that is the Disney visa rewards card, and we have another joint card that is a target Mastercard (aside from the one listed above).

So, the MDD makes me super nervous even though I know lots of people on here so it successfully.

In order to get both bonuses, you need to change it so the cards close the same date and you have to earn the bonus on both cards the same billing cycle. (At least, that's what Hubby told me when he tried to convince me to pull it last year. As it turns out, SW offered one of its best bonuses ever end of '21, so we were able to each get a CP off of only one card. But I digress...)

Trying for two SW personal cards like this is, I'd say, moderately advanced and I'd highly recommend you read up on the reddit page about how to do it right so that you don't end up with two SW cards with annual fees but only one bonus and no CP.

not quite..... in order to get both bonuses, (if they're both personal cards) you'd need to time them as described a few posts back for applying. I have done this many times , and never once have I changed a card closing date.... I *did* however time my spending very carefully, to be sure it all hit after that Jan 1 date..... the Spend for the bonus points has to be within the *same calendar year* by the same person in order to turn that into a companion pass. So anything *after* Jan 1 for spending, and you're safe. I've timed paying my bills (in the past) to literally the Jan 1st,or 2nd. I know you can (technically) do it earlier than that and it should hit after Jan 1, but I like to be safe. OP, there is a lot of info on this, and how people have made mistakes and missed the big bonus.

Ok, so less complex than I thought perhaps.

Like I said, this was a year ago and I was getting it second hand but I thought there was a specific timing on both the application and the bonus because, if you earned one bonus first, the system would see you were ineligible for a second bonus in the timeframe and wouldn't bonus out the second card. Maybe that's not the case?

Regardless, MDD is something you should know how to do before you undertake it.

So there are few tutorials in this thread I think,on getting the SWA cp (or perhaps they're in the reddit thread) but it's fairly straightfoward, if you app for (and are approved) one card, then another (either MDD with 2 personal, or one personal, one biz) Both cards in same name- then you wait till the spend will show after Jan 1 to hit that MSR. There are many sad stories on the 'net about folks who miscalculated the timing, and hit that spend too soon, thus negating the companion pass deal for the next two years, as those points accrued MUST be within the same calendar year to qualify.(in this case, after Jan 1,2023)

No, that is not the case at all. You could hit SW card #1 in Jan and hit SW card #2 in Feb and both will receive the bonus.

And, technically, once your Dec bill closes you can start meeting the Jan spend. So if your statement closes 12/20, 12/21 you can meet the MSR.

Also, remember returns count toward the MSR.

Well, maybe I'll be a little more open to the MDD when we come eligible again for the CSP/CSR.

As described to me, I thought it was both application timing and bonus timing, which felt more risky.

ETA: Bonus timing completely independent from the SWA calendar year rule. I am fully comfortable with the fact that spending should hit in the new calendar year for the CP, but I thought there was an added complication with MDD and bonus timing aside from the CP calendar year earning.

NOT AT ALL! The terms and conditions state it takes something like up to 6-8 weeks for points to appear. When we tried to get a CP we made the MSR spend requirements to get the bonus in mid-December and they posted the points only days later and screwed us out of getting the pass. I had SW card in the past and it always took weeks for points to post. I will always feel it was purposefully done by the company.

this would be one example of those sad stories..... b/c I've read so many others similiar, I was super careful to hit that spend AFTER the 1st..... (I'm sorry that happened to you I feel your frustration!)

So it sounds like your first goal either is trying to get cash back for a sofa or plane tickets (on Delta).
Based on the info you reported, you are 1/24 (for Chase purposes). Do you each have your own CF? Or is one of you an AU?
I am not a Delta flyer being based in Chicago and FL. Someone else will have more info there for the Delta/Amex world.
Most of us focus on the Chase cards first while we are under 5/25 (5 cards in 24 months). Since you already have CF cards you are off to a good start on earning UR points. Take a look at the Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR). It has a high SUB until 11/30 of 80K UR. These points would marry with your CF points. This card has a high annual fee of $550. You get $300 annual travel credit, one TSA/GE credit and various other things that might add value for you (doordash, instacart credits). You would have access to the travel portal to book Delta this way. Your UR points would be worth 1.5x toward travel and pay yourself back categories(PYB).
A very important point I like to point our to young churners is to always pay your balance off. If you start to pay interest, those points are worth nothing. Work on building an emergency fund to pay for those unexpected expenses! Capital One (online bank) is paying 3% interest right now. Make sure you get your money working for you.
