We have a local nursing home with 92 cases and 16 deaths
Ugh

While our hospital is pretty full, they are furloughing employees who do outpatient since that is all canceled and usually makes up 50% of revenue. We are on lockdown too, and guess what, rates have skyrocketed this week.My shift was canceled today and I'm an RN. They are canceling RN's in my state every day as hospitals sit at half capacity. People get mad when I say that because it's not what they are being told on the news. We even have local businesses bringing us food because they think we're working so hard. Then people will tell me it's coming your going to get hit eventually. How is there going to be a surge in my city when were on lockdown. Isn't that the whole purpose of the lockdown? In the meantime, a couple of my favorite small businesses have folded.
I'm sure it's bad in NYC, but I'm guessing in a city with 19 million people there hospitals are always busting at the seams. It doesn't sound like they were prepared for this.
I don't know what 20%-30% unemployment looks like. I haven't seen that in my lifetime. I would expect some civil unrest in certain cities, but I don't know.
That’s awesome. I haven’t been to Costco in over a month. The nearest Costco is always super busy, not attempting it now. That said, Instacart is pretty useless here. Nothing can be scheduled in less than a week.I was planning a Costco trip as well and getting stressed just thinking about it but my neighbor texted this morning asking if I needed anything from Costco. She is placing an Instacart order. So, I sent her my list. Yay! Love my neighbor!
I freeze extra flour. Keeps it fresh.
I am sure the studies don't show their assumptions and a confidence interval. Statistically, I would say April 27 and April 29 are the same thing. There is no way to pinpoint to the exact day!!
I think they are showing confidence intervals. Maybe I'm misremembering![]()
That’s our Costco too. Always a zoo even with no pandemic going on. I’ve never used Instacart and she hadn’t either so who knows if she’s able to get a time...? She said she was ‘waiting on a time slot’.That’s awesome. I haven’t been to Costco in over a month. The nearest Costco is always super busy, not attempting it now. Most nurses have kids and families so it’s not that easy to deploy. Most of the states that are hardest hit aren’t compact states. I don't know if they have lifted the license requirements. NYC is offering travel contracts up to 5k a week but so far I haven’t met a traveler that wants to go there. While our hospital is pretty full, they are furloughing employees who do outpatient since that is all canceled and usually makes up 50% of revenue. Nurses who have nothing to do can certainly deploy to areas of need.
My grandma is 91yo. She lives at home alone and is also doing great! She has two neighbors who are getting her groceries and other neighbors are going and picking up meals and bringing her one. No working out for her lol but she normally volunteers two 8-hour days a week at the hospital but she’s not gone in since end of Feb. She is just hunkered down. I’m so glad she has nice neighbors cause she’d rather be home than having to go stay with family a few hours away.I just got off the phone with my 93 yo grandma. Sounds like she’s doing great! I’m so thankful she lives in her own house with my aunt on a farm. She has so much space to go outside and walk around. She’s been home for 6 weeks and counting. She has a book of workouts she’s doing with 3 lb weights. She said they feel like nothing because she’s used to 5 lb weights at the Y![]()
Your grandma is younger than my grandma lol. I have old parents though. My grandma was able to call the store (fareway) and tell them what she wanted. Then she drove up and they put it in her trunk for her. She normally volunteers at the hospital gift shop but hasn’t been able to either. She told me on the phone she can’t even go to her brunch spot that she goes to every Sunday lol.My grandma is 91yo. She lives at home alone and is also doing great! They are redepositing without a fee but only flights before May 31. I have a June 11 flight and am waiting for them to extend their deadlines. We are in the same position. We had our family vacation planned to London for June 3rd-9th. We have not 100% decided to cancel, but it looks like that is the prudent thing to do at this point. We are on UA for the flights. We are booked totally on points, but have other family members that are also going that are booked non-points. I have the same question. Is it better to go ahead and cancel now, or wait and see if UA cancels the flights? Also, has UA relented and now giving refunds and re-depositing points without fees and vouchers? We had not made any hotel or other reservations, so no concerns there. TIA for any info/advice.
I'm not a PhD so I get lost when this gets too technical. I do work with PhD economists and am the daughter of one so that helps someFeel free to educate me as needed! I do find this whole thing fascinating, but I would gladly do without the experience to save lives.

Yeah I saw that. The money’s great if you can handle being in a shut down NYC. I couldn’t handle it.I saw a whole plane full (well, every other seat, full) of doctors & nurses flying to NYC (I think) to help out. It was on NBC national news.
I live in Central New York but I am feeling keenly, what those down state of me are living through. It is painful to watch. I believe that plane full of doctors and nurses who made the choice to come here, in spite of the very likely great personal cost to both themselves and the ones they love are the ones who divide those who have a "job" from the ones who live a "calling." They are true heroes, in my mind... just like my loved ones who are military, in the Marines and Air Force. This is a war... and it affects all of us, whether we see it that way now, or not. I'm feeling guilty lately that what I am doing right now to help, is sitting on the couch watching it unfold from a distance, while others put their lives on the line every day.I saw a whole plane full (well, every other seat, full) of doctors & nurses flying to NYC (I think) to help out. Can you reschedule for next year? Maybe with the date change for the olympics the tickets will become available again and you can try for it.
I'm hoping my friend and I will be able to get the time off I want and we don't get pushed back into August so we can avoid it. I don't think overlapping with the end of the parolympic games will cause us too much issues. I'll have to look into it though, suppose we could always do the trip backwards from what was planned if we had to.
Haven't verified this yet but it would help me out

I really like your post. I work in a nursing home where we now have 3 positive residents, one of which passed away two nights ago, and A LOT of test results pending for residents with symptoms (it takes us 5 days to get results- ridiculous). I had to call verizon wireless today about about an issue I was having and the girl I spoke with said she was working from home and asked if I was working from home too. I told her no, I'm actually on my lunch break working in my nursing home right now. She responded by saying "Thank you for your service." It was so unexpected to hear that because that's always what you say to your military, but it really made me feel good. In my town we haven't yet been hit hard. It's just starting. Already there is such a different feel to the place and a lot of staff are nervous. We have parents and family members at home that we worry we could take it home to. I'm concerned enough about DH, DS, and DD. My parents are in their 70's with multiple health conditions. They live next door, but I've told them I won't be seeing them until this is over. Some of our staff here don't have the ability to do that. One of my close co-workers lives with and cares for her 80 something parents. We had several employees who walked out the day we had our first positive patient, and a trickle of others quitting since then. I can't imagine how it will get if it spreads more through our facility. I work in physical therapy, but our therapy staff has been helping nursing, activities, and anywhere else after we finish our treatments for the day because we're short staffed now. I've actually really developed a greater appreciation for our activities staff. Our poor residents have been stuck in their rooms- not able to come out for any reason- for weeks now, and our more active, social residents are really struggling with that. Our activities staff is doing an awesome job keeping them busy, helping them face time family members since they can't visit, playing hallway BINGO, things like that. I'm really praying for negative results on the ones we have outstanding. I know how it feels here in my building- I can't imagine how those working in the hard hit areas must be feeling.I live in Central New York but I am feeling keenly, what those down state of me are living through. I will say this. I hope if I or the ones I love end up in need in the coming months... we find ourselves in the care of those who were called on, and chose to respond.
