Congrats! I'm kind of interested in going for this card too (almost done with AA MSR and then I got nothing..). I'm not understanding why you got the $60 statement credit?? IS that part of the bonus or just cause the instant number didn't work?
It's because the instant number didn't work. I got the same when DH applied.

@DisneyMandC one of your emails should have a link to get the instant number. I was able to use that, but it doesn't always work. It did not work with Swagbucks, which would have been great. Also tried another purchase it didn't work for. Now I can't remember what I did use it for, I think Amazon.

That's a pretty sweet deal!

I have 2 United Club passes that expire 8/8/19 anyone want them?

That's a really nice offer! I'll keep an eye out on DH's travels to see if he'll be using his day passes, and will offer them up here if anyone is interested. It will probably be closer to Dec.

On that note, does anyone want a Shell $.10off/gal TMobile code? :)

Hi are you trying to earn points for a trip to Japan? Can you explain to me what you decided was the best method for this? I am tryng to earn ANA miles for flights to Japan and need a big sign up! thanks!

I'm the worst person to ask about miles for Japan BUT @DisneyMandC just got her tickets, @Haley R went this spring using points and miles and @calypso726 is headed there in the late summer, IIRC.

Regardless, the advice is to start stockpiling points/miles for a big trip a year-two years in advance.

Good luck!

One last question......can I self refer? Seems like a big NO, but now my wheels are turning.
Do you have a P2 to support you....some here have....Amex took self support points back....but Chase has not done so
If you decide not to self support...you can go to our DISchurners group on Reddit and help someone out there

Yes, just from the lack of instant number! I don't need to put any spend on it right away since I'm working on some other cards so it works out great fo rme.

I'm certainly not an expert at getting to Japan but I want to stress that MRs DO NOT transfer to AA! I don't want anyone to go into the Amex sphere to obtain AA miles for they will be disappointed!!! In the One world alliance you can transfer to Qantas and Avios but NOT directly to AA.

ANA is a partner as well (*Alliance).

I'm a big big proponent of MRs (see above) but they can't go straight to AA.

Yikes, thanks for pointing out my typo!! That should have said ANA miles, not AA miles! Going back to edit it.

Good to know, thank you! The email would've gone to DH so I'll have to ask. It's not a big deal anyways since I have this CIP to work on. Actually two CIPs... and a Hilton Biz to finish up... :rotfl2:

Good to know, thank you. We are currently working on gaining Mosaic status with our Jetblue card, but maybe after we reach $50k we might start a CIP card.

$50k (Actually $48k) spend could get you 636k Ultimate Rewards and 117k Hyatt points. At a minimum that's $5,490 cash in your pocket (I took fees out) + the Hyatt points. Or, if used for travel, over 50% more ($8,670) than that in cash value + the Hyatt points.

And to put those Hyatt points in perspective, that 111k gets you around one of the following: 5 nights all inclusive in Puerto Vallarta, 9 nights at Park Hyatt in Siem Reap, 4 nights Park Hyatt in Paris, etc.

You could actually get/maximize more, I just kept it simple (CIP x4, CSR/CSP x2, Hyatt x2).

Would you trade Mosaic status for that? If so, welcome to the party.

AMEX MR transferred to Virgin for ANA or ANA direct will be your best bet.

I sent Scottmel over here from my Japan TR. Since they are locked out of Chase, I suggested MR earning Amex cards to try to be able to transfer to Virgin Airlines for the ANA redemption. There is also the backup MR option of Quantas for JAL.

But I'm not up to date on the best Amex bonuses right now, so I hoped you guys could help Scottmel out by recommending the best cards to try to get.

My off the cuff was: Business or Personal Platinum if can pull the 100k offer and can handle the minimum spend; personal rewards gold; business blue preferred.

@Calfan and I also did big Japan airlines redemptions. Calfan did hers with MRs through Quantas, which will also be an option for Scottmel if ANA doesn't work out and/or they decide to go for JAL. I did British Air avios for JAL with a combo of MRs and URs.

DH got a AMEX Mailer and Email for Delta 70,000 points. In the past he has gotten the pop up. Not sure if the mailer will bypass that or not.

I’m wondering about mailers also. I’m in pop up jail but I got a mailer for the Amex Gold.

I've stayed at a lovely small hotel-The Lime Tree Hotel and while it clearly isn't a Marriott, it was fairly budget friendly (for London) and in an awesome location-near Victoria Station and the Victoria bus station. It was perfect for a week.

ETA-when we were there they served free breakfast and Sainsbury's (or Tesco) was around the corner. It's a grocery store so a quick lunch or dinner could be grabbed. There's also a pub and a pizza place around the corner. Can you tell I'm food focused, lol!

I need to look this one up! London is the only stop on our trip next summer that I don’t have plans figured out for yet.

Will have to look into it! I have been hoarding my Marriott points for Europe, just because we'd already picked up a bunch so kept going. But I'm not tied to them either.

I feel like this could be a commercial tagline :rotfl:

It's so convenient AND in a very nice part of town. I forget if there are 3 or 4 of you but they have tiny single rooms, slightly less tiny single rooms, double and triple rooms (sadly none for 4). DD and I really enjoyed our time there.

@scottmel I probably won't be much help because we used Chase points and you mentioned you won't be getting any Chase cards.

So, if one did wish to purchase those Metabank MCGC at Staples ( I think I read that Staples usually carries them), what is a safe card to use?

Are you referring to Amex cards? Technically, you can purchase it on any card and it's fine, you just won't earn any points from it. You should not purchase GCs from Staples/OD/OM during MSR period since they send level 3 data.

You’re fine for any card but not a good idea if you are meeting a MSR for an Amex. No points earned on Amex for gc purchases as well.
@DisneyMandC covered it!!

In addition to what @DisneyMandC and @wendow wrote, what I would caution is to make sure you're aware of the various time-limited deals and have a clear idea of how you'll liquidate the MCGC or VGC.

There was a lot of chatter last week about MCGCs at Staples because they were running a "fee free" deal on $200 denomination MCGCs between 7/21/19-7/27/19. A $200 MCGC will cost you only $200 on your credit card, and you get the spend and reward points. This deal has since expired. If you were to purchase one of these $200 MCGCs now, you'd be paying $200 + a $6.95 activation fee. The way to break even or even come out ahead of the fee is, buy it with no fee or a discounted fee, with a card on which you're working on MSR or earns a high category bonus for purchases at office supply stores. Occasionally there are Chase Offers and Amex Offers to Staples that you can stack. (Folks on the Disney Gift Card Deals thread will also stack shopping apps like Ebates -- which I wouldn't recommend at risk of shutdown -- or RMN.) So you don't want to be using an Amex card to buy gift cards of any type at an office supply store when working on an MSR (not a problem for you). You can use a CIP or Citi AA Biz and put that purchase towards your MSR, but neither card earns more than 1x at an office supply store. The CIC earns a 5x UR bonus at office supply stores, so some people find it worthwhile to use it to buy gift cards ($200 x 5x UR = 1,000 UR, and you still have your $200 in the form of a gift card and at least $10 in rewards). But in this example, you're "floating" $200 in the form of a gift card. If it's a third-party gift card, say to Disney, you'll liquidate it when you go to Disney; or say, a restaurant, you'll liquidate it when you eat at that restaurant. If it's in a VGC or MCGC, there are ways of liquidating and getting the funds back into your bank account to pay your credit card bill. That's MS, and there are some resources about it on our reddit. Or else, you're "floating" that money until you can spend the VGC or MCGC down organically,

Outside of these fee free and $ off deals on VGC/MCGC, Staples/OD/OM are not necessarily the best place to buy a prepaid gift card with the activation fee. In-store, VGC/MCGC top out at only $200 at Staples/OD/OM and come with a $6.95 fee. 6.95% represents a 3.475% fee on $200. By comparison, most grocery stores sell VGC/MCGC in a variable load denomination up to $500 for a $5.95 fee. That's just a 1.19% fee by comparison. Supermarket chains like Kroger frequently run fuel points on fixed denomination gift cards, including VGC/MCGC; and Safeway runs $10 off deals when buying 2x $50 VGC/MCGC or $100+ VGCs, or $15 off 2x $100 VGC/MCGC. Safeway has a deal on $50 and $100 VGC running until 8/2/19, and Kroger has a 4x fuel points deal on fixed denomination gift cards through 8/13/19.

But again, you need to do a little bit of math to see how the fees (if any), discounts, and credit card rewards work out, and always have a plan how to liquidate it!

Also, beware of tampered gift card packaging to avoid buying compromised gift cards that are at risk of getting drained.

This is a big topic, so let me know if there's anything unclear to you.
