Has anyone taken the train from ewr into nyc. Still trying to figure out my Thanksgiving trip. Amtrak’s prices shot up overnight.

I took NJ transit last year from EWR to NY Penn Station. It was easy, and there are numerous descriptions of it online which I found helpful. @DisneyMandC brought up a good point about needing a taxi or rideshare if your hotel is far from Penn Station. My family did the trek with our luggage (we were going on to Italy from JFK in a few days) and we stayed about a 15 minute walk away from Penn Station, it was doable if crowded on the sidewalks. But NY streets were soooo congested with traffic I bet we were faster walking.

Yes, we did once and it was super easy. Got off plane, walked to train station (in the airport), purchased tickets, waited no more than 5 mins, train arrived, hopped in and in less than a half hour (I think) we were in NYC! I'd do it again and recommend it!

Jumping in with Plastiq for MSR for the new CIP. Questions: Does the plastiq acct have to be in the same name as the CIP cardholder? If I link the CIP, does the Plastiq acct have to be a business acct? Also, if I pay my DD's tuition, the plastiq acct and CC doesn't have to match either, correct? Thank you!

i could of sworn someone in here did exactly that.

People were doing this back when you could still pay mortgages (and similarly, HELOCs) with Visa and hitting it hard with CIP 3x. I’m sure I mentioned it.

Oh I don't doubt it. It probably just didn't register at the time for some reason.

Looks like you’ve been busy this year with cards that Chase can see from 2/1, 4/5, 4/21, and 4/23. That’s 3 cards last month, not counting inquires on the biz. I’d take some time to cool off.

Definitely keep assessing your CLs for Chase. Chase doesn’t seem to care so much about CLs on cards from other issuers so much as their balances. I’ve been seeing increasing reports recently of Chase conducting “periodic reviews” (financial reviews) of folks who have an increased number of recent inquiries and/or rapid increases in balances whether on cards issued by Chase or other banks. (Not just because of a new Chase app/hard pull, which makes me wonder if Chase is conducting occasional soft pulls on their customers.) So if you’re floating any high balances on personal cards, it’s probably a good idea to pay them down before applying.

Thank you. I think I agree with you. Just wonder how much time is enough. 6 months? I'm only at about 30% of income with CL's, so I think I'm good there. My personal card balances are low. Sounds like I just need to wait.

No, the cc does not have to be in the name of the Plastiq accountholder or for whom the payment is made on behalf of. I don’t think there’s really any distinction between a business or personal account on Plastiq. I use personal and biz ccs interchangeably on Plastiq.

@CyndiLouWho said what I was going to say. I've driven the uhaul across the country from WA to NC and back and I don't care if I move 10 miles across town I'm not doing it myself. Though with that short I'd be fine driving the truck but not the loading and unloading. Anything out of state someone else can do, ESPECIALLY if someone else is paying for it.

It's a giant pain in the butt and it's not fun. If you did it yourself you'd have to tow one of the cars, because really either way in order for the cars to be there when you get there they'll have to leave IA before you do. Or they leave when you do and you are car less in FL and have to rent. Either way I'd drive one of the cars down and let them move the other. Cost wise, it's not going to save anything and someone else is paying. It's just more stress. They aren't fun to drive, you have to rely on your mirrors and be a more confident driver than you are in your car.

And then there's the whole, Someone else is PAYING to move the stuff so you don't have to. Pack up the car with the guitars, some clothes, the cats, valuables and any papers that are sensitive that you don't want lost. When you sit and think about it, the car is for the stuff you don't want to lose but it's stuff you wouldn't want/be able to take if you did fly, not even thinking about the cats. But the bed that the movers move or the box of towels etc, I can live without those for a few days and I have insurance so if something happens to them I can just go buy new ones. But moving sucks, take the stress out of doing it yourself because you can.
My last move was so stressful and we had movers and moved everything into storage. Movers originally scheduled for Saturday, couldn’t get a truck so rescheduled for Monday. Which DH and I did not have off work. I stayed at the house until 11 am, making me very late for work, but my boss wouldn’t give me the day off with such short notice. DH ended up calling in sick to get stuff done. Movers were putting everything into a couple storage units, but had to make multiple trips. Lawyer calls from closing to say buyers check didn’t arrive, they will be waiting for it. Cool, more time. Buyers Realtor shows up saying she wants the keys now and buyers have deliveries scheduled. Then starts making offensive comments. Lawyer calls back to says buyers check arrives, all good. While I’m on the phone with him, Realtor is standing next to me calling him to complain. :headache: Seriously one of the most stressful days of my life.

The moving company they give us would pack everything as well as move it. Dh’s family is a “do it yourself” kind of family which is almost the opposite of mine. We just come from different backgrounds and I think that’s why. He wants to just save the money so that we can use as much of the capped limit as possible. The biggest problem is we thought they would move our stuff in like 3 days which wasn’t realistic thinking but we literally leave 3 days after getting back from Japan so we don’t have a lot of options as far as them coming earlier to pack.

BUT the good thing is that the sellers are leaving their kitchen, dining room, and living room sets. So if our stuff takes too long we could sleep on the sectional and we would be okay.
Just because you own the new house, doesn’t mean you need to live there ASAP or is that when DHs new job starts?

If you were just moving to a new house in your current town, no one would be paying for any of it. He’s getting a budget for moving costs, a great new job, and if I understand correctly, a pay increase. He needs to try to look at the big picture. I know it’s hard though

Ooooh, you found something near Times Square! Well that seems like a bonus to me.

Yeah... well, Hell's Kitchen, so a 10-12 minute walk to TS. So yes!

No, sorry. Amtrak from Richmond but now I may fly. I know taxi from newark is expensive. Just wondering how taking the train is. Otherwise I’ll fly into lga.

I've done the train thing a few times. Not specifically the Richmond to NYC route but I've certainly passed through it. Amtrak's pricing isn't variable, it's just they sell a certain number of tickets at cheaper prices, and when they're sold, that's it, the price moves up to the next bucket. If it's a multiple times per day train (like the Northeast Regional), you could check different times for different prices. The train from EWR to NYP would be incredibly easy, as previously mentioned. You could also take NJ Transit, and I believe there's even a World Trade Center bound train where you can transfer to the NYC subway (though this would be much more of a pain depending on where you're staying).

He starts a week after we get back from Japan

Mark your boxes for contents - you may not want to search through multiple 'kitchen' boxes just to find a spatula and frying pan for breakfast.
I lived this. Lol. Boxes marked Kitchen had to be searched multiple times just to get a meal on the table
DH just tells me I'll look great no matter what I decide lol
Smart man. It would be ugly if my husband told me how to cut my hair.

He starts a week after we get back from Japan
And he thinks he’s going to move cross country and get things unpacked in a week? He’s an optimistic person.
Are his parent going to come down and help unpack?
It does sound like you don’t have a lot of stuff. We have lots of stuff. Lots. But we’ve been married 30 years and DH is a collector. Much of our stuff is in boxes in our basement because we have no room in current house.

So tickets were $370 (for two of us—$164 for the saver up leaving 11/29 am and $206 for value home leaving 12/1 around noon). Almost all trains were at these prices those days. Now they are $294 for value up (saver not available) and $206 for value back. Just not much of a value compared to non-stop flights.

My ex and I moved a ton in our 20s. Chicago to northern Virginia, northern Virginia to Richmond, Richmond to Tampa, Tampa to Raleigh (then ended back in Richmond in our early 30s). All but the first two moves were with little ones. We had movers but always packed everything ourselves. And I don’t really remember either of us taking almost any time off to move. Certainly never a week. It seems crazy now but at the time I guess it worked.

oh really? Both of ours auto draft to our credit cards. I assume you went to the issuer's website to verify it can't be done? If so, maybe call them and ask how to mail a payment.
Many of the major life insurance issuers out there don't accept payment via card. I'm sure it's mostly to keep costs down and I'm cool with that as my primary concern when choosing life insurance is cost and how reputable the company is :)

Honestly, and maybe I am biased b/c I don't care at all about SWGE, but I haven't heard anyone talk about or much less say they are going b/c it is opening. I mean, obviously on disboards, but not in real life. I am really wondering if it will be that busy, esp since it isn't opening all at once. Obviously I expect initial insanity, but I'm not sure it will be long-lived. I will probably be proven totally wrong, lol.
I'm pretty sure you'll be proven wrong, lol. I'm expecting it to still be a zoo for our late January trip! LOL!

Did you guys see this thing about SWGE EMH schedule?

  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios — Daily from Sept. 1-Nov. 2, the park will have Extra, Extra Magic Hours from 6-9 a.m., including Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, plus Toy Story Land attractions and select other attractions. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and its experiences subject to capacity.
(Please note that on Aug. 29-31,Disney’s Hollywood Studios will open at 6 a.m. for all guests. There will not be Extra, Extra Magic Hours on those days.)

  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom – Extra, Extra Magic Hours will happen daily Aug. 29-Nov. 2, from 7-8 a.m., featuring Pandora – The World of Avatar and other attractions throughout the park (same as today’s morning Extra Magic Hours offerings).
  • Magic Kingdom Park —Extra, Extra Magic Hours will happen daily from Aug. 29-Nov. 2, from 7-8 a.m., featuring favorite attractions in Fantasyland and Tomorrowland (same as today’s morning EMH offerings).
I’m equal parts excited and anxious. We are in the camp of people with young kids that specifically chose Labor Day week for low crowds, so the SWGE news was a bit hard to take at first. I’m glad they’re giving more time to people to enjoy the parks, but I’m worried about what it means for crowds. DH has already lost the magic bug because of it. The one bonus was that we did receive gracious compensation for our canceled MK EMM.

Arghh, I'm staying offsite my October trip! I can book a campsite for $71 for one night to visit HS early.

I booked a one night tent site ($80 with tax), will give me 2 days of free parking at the parks, saving me $50, plus 2 days of 60 day FP and the VERY early HS opening. I was there at 6 AM last August for the TSL early opening, I think I can get there at 5 AM in October!

Thanks for the heads-up SouthFayetteFan - some days I'm so busy this is the only thread I read!

We’ve never taken a week off to move but it’s taken longer than a week to move and unpack. And only our last move had movers. Always begged friends for help before that.

I’m expecting chaos at DLR summer 2020. I never heard one person IRL mention Pandora yet FOP had huge waits at opening and a couple years later can still top 3 hours. Star Wars has a much bigger fan base. Even today is a busier day for SW attractions and it’s only May the 4th.

Yeah I’m not sure where his mind’s at lol. I’m fairly positive I’ll convince him to have them move us. Just like he’ll probably convince me to drive it all in one day. If we take turns there’s no reason we couldn’t do it in one day. It would be nice not to have to stop at a hotel and just get to the house. It would give the cats a chance to settle in before the movers show up. That way they can get used to the house and have their scent on things.
