Ok, I know there was a big discussion on luggage a few weeks back, but I’ve decided my roll aboard I got at my bridal shower 12 years ago has seen better days. And that seemed to focus on backpacks.

Anyone have any suggestions for a great carry on? I like reeaallly want an away suitcase, but the logical part of my brain can’t pay $245 for a suitcase.
My mom and cousin say great things about ebags, and I saw today that they have a substantial amount of extra points via the Chase portal if you have access to that.

That happened to me when I priced out a points ressie at swolphin a month or two ago. I think I asked about it here and it got pushed upthread before anyone answered.
Yeah they definitely was missed by me. What did they want you to pay??!

Yes but it wasnpoints advance for me...maybe that is why. I knew it was unusual though because I’d never done it before. It was a speculative booking so I just didn’t book it.

Did they give you an amount? Was it like the cost of one night’s stay?

View from the Wing is posting about Marriott asking for cash deposits on point award bookings, and high deposits at that. It's not seen unless you read the fine print.

This on top of the extra person fees for 2+ persons, even if they’re just kids — glitch or not — makes booking Marriott very unfriendly. I mean do they want to scare off prospective guests with sticker shock right off the bat?

This week's movie, since Mom also hadn't seen it, was Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. I can see why Bette Davis was nominated for an Oscar for it but it was so long as slow. But someone should totally remake the move, bring it more present day somehow and tighten it up. It'd be good. It's considered horror but a remake would fall into today's psychological thriller. Mom's only comment was she realized why she'd never watched it :rotfl2:

I'll be honest when it comes to the thread I skip over most of the Marriott stuff since I don't have or want any of their cards. I like my Hyatt and will look into Hilton next to use in Japan in a couple years.

I skip over all of the Hyatt and Marriott talk lol

Am I correct that if using this coupon it would be 185 for the two gc or is there activation fees and it's not that much savings?

hmm... i wonder if u can abuse that...

its $196.90 at the end.

I was bad and used a Citi card for $800 tonight instead of working towards my CIP MSR. I had to buy one of my parents a new smartphone and I also decided to spring for a smart doorbell from Costco because the deal is almost as good as Thanksgiving and I regretted not jumping in then. Citi's 24-month extended warranty period and price rewind got me good :( At least I am just over half way through the CIP MSR and my insurance bill next month will easily put me over.

And just like that...my Backdoor SM was successful and Citi closed my AA Business card, no questions asked. This was potentially the easiest 60,000 miles & $200 I've ever earned from a card...(I do realize I'm discounting the 3 backdoor SMs I had to send to get that 20k match...lol)

The Marriott thing? Would depend on how long you want the money tied up. Can you cancel them and get the points back without fees? If you had the money to float or a 0% card. Didn't seem they knew when it'd be charged though because they didn't have a DP of anyone booking it.

its more like... book something big, like St Regis Aspen... Get charged, wait for it to post and paid for... cancel your card...
how else are they gonna refund u? cash? back to a debit card?

random thoughts... lol

Preview of snacks to be offered on SW Hawaii flights:

https://viewfromthewing.boardingare...st-airlines-snack-service-for-hawaii-flights/

Nothing surprising...no hot meals. I will link to news thread also. :)

Taking a page from Hawaiian Airlines:
According to an internal Southwest Airlines memo they’re doing this because “customers will want to be immersed in the Hawaiian culture as soon as they board our aircraft.”

Still it turns out that Southwest will bolster their complimentary snack service a bit, offering:
  • “a snack bag filled with Wheat Thins, pretzels, cheese spread, fruit snacks and … Tic Tacs.”

  • an hour prior to arrival Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies

  • new Hawaii-inspired drinks on board: Minute Maid pineapple orange juice, Blue Chair Bay coconut spiced rum, and Kona Longboard Island Lager.

I have to say, wheat thins and Milano cookies don’t exactly say “Aloha” or evoke Hawaiian culture to me, but I suppose that’s because Southwest is new to the islands and hasn’t developed partnerships with local companies yet.

By comparison, Hawaiian offers a snack mix bag, pineapple-shaped shortbread cookies from the Honolulu Cookie Co., and complimentary island flavored drinks from Hawaiian Sun and Koloa Rum.

United Airlines used to offer glamorous service to Hawaii and indeed until just a few years ago most flights featured the “Halfway to Hawaii game” where you could win a bottle of champagne. Passengers would be invited to guess the exact time they’d be halfway across the ocean to Hawaii.... I’m not aware of the game being played any longer.

I remember this, and I actually won once!

Really glad Southwest is making the effort!

ETA: I will add that Hawaiian still serves a complimentary meal aboard their flights. Their offerings have changed (usually lower in quality) over the years, and lately you can expect a warm breakfast sandwich on morning flights, and a warm (e.g., teriyaki chicken) sandwich on their afternoon or evening flights. Not too many years ago, they used to offer a lunch box with a few items, and hot dinners with a choice of usually chicken or pasta.

Just watched this Ask Sebby video about the AmEx Hilton cards and upgrade bonuses.

He talks about getting all 3 AmEx Hilton cards (no fee, Ascend, Aspire) and then upgrading with upgrade offers for a total of 6 bonuses (3 welcome, 3 upgrade). I'm intrigued. Sounds great for when I'm over 5/24. But I'm wondering are upgrade offers pretty predictable after you've had the card 1 year? And do you get the upgrade offer if you already have the card (i.e. upgrade offer for Ascend to Aspire when you already have the Aspire)? Does it matter which order to get the cards initially?

2 Thoughts:

2) AA Miles for Disney are all the rage right now on the thread and people are using CitiBusiness AA cards and Barclays Aviator Biz cards to earn them...consider jumping on that bandwagon as it doesn't affect 5/24!

Do these cards share the same portal for booking travel?

Also, can I go ahead and apply now, or should I wait another month? I got my first Chase card, a WOH one, at the end of December (card didn't arrive until January). Is Feb. too soon?

You may be fine now..but since your nervous about applying for a business card..it may be best to wait 3 monthus until March....to go for the CIP

Thank you so much for the advice. How low is low enough? And is it only my Chase cards that matter? I have an old Citi AA with a crazy high number (we've lowered it twice but they keep raising it). My one Chase card is something like 1/8 of our total income, but of course way high compared to my projected Biz income. Help! I don't want to be scarred for life. :)

The highest credit limit I’ve kept is $10,000 on my CSR...the rest of my chase cards I’ve reduced to $1,000-$2000...

First sent last night for the match. Wish me luck.

We can be brave together. I am also going to apply for a CIP after March 1st. I am nervous too, lol. I already lowered my one Chase CL but not the other. Now it’s probably too late. I also have a citi with a CL that is higher than it needs to be.

It’s probably not too late to reduce those CLs....I was super nervous the first time too and upset when my CIP wasn’t automatically approved like I’d been for personal cards...but a few days later I was approved....after calling the status line a lot..lol....It’s definitely worth the stress for all those URs
