I have to spend several hundred dollars at Best Buy very soon. Other than buying B.B. gift cards at Staples using my CIC for the 5x bonus, is there any other obvious strategy I am missing? We also have CSR, CSP, CIP, and SPG biz. I have never used any of the rebate apps but I am willing if it’s worth it.

Great question! I have the same question since DH doesn't want to get a TV through the Dell discount on his Amex. :rolleyes1

Yikes, what credit card did you pay for the flight fees with? Idk if there is typically protection when flying to your home airport though.
We used our CSR to pay for the fees and points to pay for the tickets. Shouldn’t our CSR give us some kind of money back? I’ve never had to deal with this so I’m not exactly sure how it works

ETA: We don’t know for sure our bags are lost but they are delayed and it says on chase that we get $100/day for toiletries and clothes for up to 5 days. Does this work even if we only paid the fees with our card?

Ik it works even though you only paid the fees with your card. The thing I’m seeing it says for “emergency” purchases idk if that would prevent you from recovering. But I guess you can try it out. I have never filed a claim before. Hopefully, someone else can chime in and help. If not I would call Chase and see what they say. You and DH may even get $100 each??

you can do $.50 too, but im unsure how low ur requirements are.

Oh even better! I just got to do 30 transacations in 60 days. I think the opening deposit counts. I just did a mini transfer of $1k. Once that posts, I'll do the bigger transfer to get me to $25k. And then just gotta get those other 26 transactions, LOL

I’m not impressed with southwest customer service at all. When frontier had our bags delayed once (not even lost, just delayed) they gave each of us a $100 voucher to use. Southwest told me if I pick up my own bag THAT THEY LOST they will give me a $50 credit. Cool. Too bad we live 2 1/2 hours from the airport. I’m not coming back tomorrow to get my bag but I don’t get any compensation for them losing my luggage? What a bunch of crap....

I always take to twitter and email. When I was stuck in Charlotte on New Years it got me $150 voucher from Twitter and 7500 miles from email :)

Thank you both. We’ll be emailing and tweeting at southwest to see if they will do anything first. If not, I’ll call chase. If our bags turn out to actually be lost then I’ll be expecting more obviously

Chase will cover more than too if it’s lost.

I think under the carrier contract/federal laws the airline is only required to provide compensation when the luggage is lost and it will be capped regardless of how much the stuff inside costs. I know some airlines have other things they do, Alaska will give you miles if they don't have your bags on the carousel within 20 min of landing.

When they "lost" my son's gear they gave him a $50 credit right away it seems. The bags made it to him before his next flight the next morning, they had been on his previously booked flight. He had switched flights due to delay and was required (Army) to be at his destination by a certain time. His bags hadn't switched flights with him so really we just needed to wait for them to catch up with him, but they seemed easy to work with from my point of view which was via text from my son lol

Usually they find them, so I wouldn't get too worried at this point, although I know it's a pain. I'm sorry this happened. It took AA 3 days to get DD's luggage to her (and she really didn't have much with her since she was moving back into the dorm), and they finally coughed up $150 voucher. Yeah, not much, but much better than anything we've received in the past.

I’m just gonna be honest, I read the first 25 pages and then skipped to the last 5 before I gave up. I picked up on a few things and I know about the 5/24 rule but I’m still lost on what should we get.
  • Current cards that we’ve had FOREVER: CF (2008 maybe?) and a plain ol Capital One card that I’ve had since college (2000) that we never use because no points earned. I’m the account holder and DH is an AU on both.
  • I’m open to a card with an AF but would prefer one without unless the rewards are worth it. No side biz yet so can’t do a biz card.
  • We haven’t flown in years but would like to plan an overseas anniversary trip in the next 2 years.
  • We only use hotels maybe 1-2x a year
  • We typically charge about 1-2K/mo and pay off in full monthly. Mostly gas, groceries, restaurants, retail
  • Of note: we are in the middle of a house renovation and while most of the contractors will need to be paid cash we will have a number of large purchases in the next 6 months including appliances and furniture.
  • Goal is to earn some money towards our September WDW trip and also just learn the game.
Did I forget anything? TIA

On the biz card...do you have any side hustle at all that might qualify?
Ideas would include: Selling on Ebay, teaching piano lessons, selling cookies, mowing lawns, shoveling snow, selling on etsy, consulting. This business may not even be "profitable" at this point... If that's not your cup of tea though, that's fine.

I sent you a PM about joining DISchurners, I think you'll find some info there very helpful! Money towards a September trip is a great starting point! Here's some questions on that:
  • On-Site or Off-Site or TBD?
  • Any particular Hotel preference or category preference?
  • Flying or Driving?
  • If flying, what airline?
  • Do you have anything booked yet?
  • Any Other info that may be helpful...

DISchurners NEWS thread update...
https://www.reddit.com/r/DISchurners/comments/aj6vx6/news_discussion_thread/

Huge thanks to @Lain and @gottalovepluto for keeping the news thread up to date while I was away last week. I will say that it was very easy for me to keep up with the MAJOR news stories through that. I honestly hadn't planned for it to benefit me personally when I created it, BUT it did :)

I think we'll try to keep that going as it could be a great resource for newer folks and those that can't keep up with the pace daily here. Some examples of major items recently include the 1099s going out from AMEX and Chase, Retention offers on Marriott CCs and many others.

DISchurners Disney World Thread and Question...
https://www.reddit.com/r/DISchurners/comments/ai6lq0/dischurners_walt_disney_world_tips/

Reminder - we are still looking for more insight into various Disney World topics on this thread. Categories for discussion include:
  • Using Cash Back to offset costs
  • Chase Ultimate Rewards (URs)
  • AMEX Membership Rewards (MRs)
  • Citi Thank Points (TY)
  • AAdvantage Miles
  • Disney Gift Card discounts
  • Renting DVC points
  • Swan & Dolphin
  • Other Off-site Hotel recommendations and ideas
  • Citi Prestige 4th night free benefit
  • Using Bank Bonuses to offset costs
  • And a couple other topics not worth mentioning here
ALSO - there was some talk that people would like a touring plan recommendations thread where strategies could be shared and discussed. QUESTION: should this be a separate thread from the Disney World thread I just linked. The header of that thread does say "best tips on The Walt Disney World resort" so we could include touring plans as a category and keep all the discussion under that bullet OR I could create a separate thread. Open to suggestions from this group here :)

I plan to start a private practice nutrition biz to compliment my FT dietitian job in the next year but don’t have anything set yet (no name, no llc, no clients).

As far as the WDW trip:
Already booked via a DVC rental but only deposit paid so far

Thanks! 3/13 is easy to remember since that’s DS’s birthday. But I need the Christmas flights since DS has requested that we go back to our tradition of escaping and spending Christmas in the Caribbean.

Appreciate you posting this. I'm trying to learn Southwest as I cannot drive to SW Florida anymore. Too old!

You do not need to have your business all figured out to apply for a business card. You apply under your SSN (rather than an EIN) and use your name as the name of your business. That will get less scrutiny from Chase. You can put your income as what you expect to make.

The Chase Ink Preferred would be an excellent card for you to begin with. The 80k bonus is worth $800 cash back which would help cover your special event tickets and/or meals/merch.

In your case then, cashback towards your trip might be your best bet! Based on how the "rules" of the game are setup, you'll want to start with Chase cards most likely.

I'd look at the Chase Ink Preferred CIP (biz card) and either the Chase Sapphire Preferred CSP or Chase Sapphire Reserve CSR card as a great place to start. (There is a way to get both the CSP and CSR as an advanced strategy - you'd want to consult our DISchurners thread on that though to see if it's right for you, it does involve needing to spend $8,000 within 115 days to achieve it so that can be troublesome to some folks).

DO you have a spouse or other "player 2" candidate for the game? That can help you earn quicker!
