As an foreigner (Born and raised in Brazil) I remember that day in clear details, maybe because of my age 16 at the time. I remember what class I was taking ( High school literature). It was a huge deal for us even from so far away and not knowing anybody affected directly.9/11 memories do tend to be regional. For some reason I took it really seriously, but lots of people out here on the West Coast just don't look back and think it was a big deal. My friends in NY, however, take it very seriously, so I end up talking with them about it. My DD was 4 at the time and has no memories of it, but I remember how eerily quiet it was in our neighborhood for a while with all of the flights shut down and people tending to stay home more.
I also remember walking to the gate when dropping people off, or just being able to walk to our planes with no security, etc.
Leaving in MA I have meet Many people that were directly affected and they do tell me that leaving in the area right after that was such a different word.
