How did I miss this? So you can pay a mortgage with a CIP? I thought all Visas blocked mortgages (other than people doing tricks with names).

You're right about that Visas are blocked (other than doing name tricks), I wasn't clear about that, sorry! I'll go edit my post.

ETA: I tried a previous name trick that worked for me, and Plastiq would not allow me to make the payment on a CIP. Even though I picked "clubs" as the category, Plastiq knew it was for a mortgage. tagging @biochemgirl

Hi everyone!

I'd like to start by explaining that my DH and I have paid ZERO attention to credit card offers/incentives in the past. Irresponsible? Absolutely. Just felt like something we didn't have time time or energy to focus on (laziness). For years, we have kept the same 2 credit cards and have thrown away everything that came in the mail from credit card companies.

Our main card is a Chase Slate card. Our other card is a BankAmericard Rewards card (we barely use - don't even know how to build rewards). We have excellent credit scores and have always been reluctant to make any changes.

Our DD has just completed her Freshman year of college. She will be studying abroad in Scotland for the fall semester. THIS is why we finally stopped for a minute and considered our credit cards. I had to make a down payment on her room and was charged an additional 3% for an international conversion. I'll owe an additional $2600 dollars at the start of school and don't want the additional 3% added on.

We plan on flying to Scotland to make sure she's situated and stay for about a week. We are also considering the fact that we'd like her to have a credit card for emergencies. She does NOT currently have one.

I've done a little research and it seems that the Chase Sapphire and Capital One Venture cards are popular travel rewards cards that have no foreign transaction fees.

Is ignorance bliss? Heck no!! Would love any advice!!

Thank you!!!

Thanks for the detailed explanation. It sounds like it's going to work well for you, and something I may consider in the future.

Do you belong to a credit union? My DD was able to get a Visa from the credit union where she had her savings account. After that she went for a Chase CFU Visa because she wants travel points.

I was going to suggest Google Maps, but you've tried it. Last time I checked AAA had some form of their road trip "triptik" thing online, but that was a few years ago. In terms of places to stop, I'd suggest leaving some time to see Carmel/Monterey if you can.

:rotfl: I can totally relate to this, sadly.
No we don’t belong to a credit union, that would be a good idea if we did.

I am looking at booking our hotel for Disneyland this November. Marriott gives me a choice of Points Advance with $1.80 taxes and fees owed now. I want to transfer points from DH's Marriott account and attach my FN certificate shortly to pay in full with points. I have never used a FN certificate before so a few questions...

  • Would I have less chance of being BONVOYED if I wait until his points transfer to book?
  • Is there a compelling reason to use another card over a Marriott card for the payment?
  • Any trip cancellation protection from the CSR that would cover a Marriott points hotel stay?
  • How long and cost for points to transfer? I think I've heard $10 fee.
  • Anything else I am missing?

My daughter is going overseas for a year starting in August. She has an AU card on our AMEX Platinum which has no foreign transaction fees and that's what she has used in the past when traveling abroad. We also have the CSR which is a really good travel card, also with no FTC.

My DD wants a card of her own (so she gets the travel points) so I'm looking for one that doesn't require a high income level to apply. But if you don't mind the account being yours and giving her an AU card, I think the CSR is a really good option. It also comes with good travel insurance, and it sounds like that will come in handy, too.

Anyone familiar with Lone Pine, California? Between Yosemite and Las Vegas. Will be passing by on our road trip and might be a good point to stop for the night.

Does Priceline count for travel for arrival plus? So I can redeem points towards it if I book using that card right?

We initially got a Saturday 11am - 3pm timeslot, which was not ideal given the two hours of overlap between the first and third groups of the day. I kept checking with the SWGE booth and reservation line throughout yesterday, and we were able to score an 8 am - 12 pm timeslot last night.

We went to bed early and woke up early. Put in our mobile orders at Starbucks Downtown Disney West (by the Lego Store), just as we headed out of our hotel room around 5:45 am. There was no line at the bag check near the DLH. Swung by Starbucks to grab our morning fuel. Got to the turnstiles shortly before 6 am, when they’d let SWGE guests in. Headed straight to Launch Bay to get our wristbands. Then they corralled us near Galactic Grill until about 6:40 am, when they led us along the path around the Matterhorn, through Fantasyland to wait in front of the gate to Big Thunder Ranch. EMH started at 7, and we were in Fantasyland before that! We could’ve headed over to Peter Pan right at 7 to take 2 or 3 trips over London, through Neverland and back before the morning crowds even arrived. But we thought they’d take us over to the entrance to Batuu right when the park opened for EMH and didn’t want to risk getting separated. Turns out, we waited in front of that gate until just about 7:50 am, when they finally led us over to Batuu and started scanning us in. My kiddo was a champ through the whole thing.

Once in, my wife and I had a strategy of splitting up. The time stamp on my text messages tell me we got in a little earlier than 8, about 7:56 or so. We weren’t right near the front, but were maybe in the front 1/3 of the pack. We knew from reading social media, the DIS, Reddit that Oga’s Cantina and Savi’s Workshop were the most popular. We decided not to build lightsabers, but my wife wanted to build droids with our kiddo. I wanted to get some Yub Nub tiki mugs and experience the cantina. So I headed straight to line up at Oga’s. Sure enough, within 2 minutes of the land opening, CMs were already going down the line to say that the line was for the waitlist at Oga’s and only one person from the party needed to be in line. That was fine since our plan was to get on the waitlist so my wife and little one would have time to build their droids. The line moved fast enough, and within 5 minutes or so of getting in line, I had a reservation with about a 30 minute return time. There are several CMs with “data pads” (beefed up smart phones) to take down your name, number in your party, and phone number to text you to return. You’re told when you receive your text, you have 10 minutes to return even though the text says 15.

I headed back to the Droid Depot where my wife had bought two of the Batuuan Spira gift cards and already lined up to build their droids. The Spira gift cards are made of metal and feels hefty like a big coin. They have a barcode on the back that can be scanned to make purchases in store and a number and pin that can be entered to make purchases online or for management on disneygiftcard .com. I had kind of gone back and forth whether to get this. It requires a $100 load, but doesn’t cost anything extra beyond that. But I buy my Disney gift cards at a minimum of 10% off, so it’s really a lost opportunity cost of at least a $10 savings. In the end, it was just too cool, and the idea of storing up to $1,000 in Disney credit on it, then flipping and twirling it around like a big alien coin was too much to resist. These are sold only at the Droid Depot and limited to 1 per person (my wife bought 2, one for her and one “for” our kiddo). It’s been reported that these Spira gift cards have been selling out, so she bought it first thing. I was tempted to pick another one up, since I do have quite a bit of discounted Disney gift cards accumulated throughout the year towards various trips, but I’ll be fine with just two and transferring balances over when one depletes.

Just as we got near the front of the droid building line, when they let you in to pick your parts off the conveyor belt, I got a text message to return to Oga’s. This was only about 10 minutes after I put my name down, and I had 15 minutes to return. My wife made a snap judgment that she’d rather build droids than check out the cantina, and sent me back to the cantina. I explained the situation to the cantina CM who was checking people in, and she was totally cool with letting us come back in 20-30 minutes after my wife and youngling had completed their droids. I rushed back to the Droid Depot where my wife was picking out parts at the conveyor belt, we built two droids, a CM activated them, and we were on our way in about 20 minutes. When we left the Droid Depot, a pretty sizable line had formed.

We returned to the cantina, the kind CM checked us in, and we waited only a few minutes before we were let in. The cantina is dimly lit, with alien animals and off putting liquids in tanks, an animatronic droid DJing loud music, and a slightly rude waitstaff. There are booths, but they seemed to be held for large parties or shared among several groups. We stood at a table in between the bar and booths. I didn’t notice any barstools, and there definitely isn’t a restroom in there. We ordered a Yub Nub and extra tiki mugs (same price with or without the drink), an Oga’s Obsession, which is like a Petri dish of blue tapioca balls and pop rocks; and a Batuu bites, which might seem exotic looking and tasting, but for anyone familiar with Asian snacks it’s just mostly togarashi tossed rice chips, nori with puffed rice chips, lotus root chips, wasabi peas, arare/mochi crunch. I felt a little(/lot) ripped off! We got a tip from our neighbors at the table to ask for coasters, and we’re given some gratis. They’re a little like the coasters given out at the Lamplight Lounge. We took a sip of the Yub Nub, and it was fine for a tropical cocktail but a bit sour, and we couldn’t exactly get smashed before 9 am with a kiddo in tow. We were in and out of there pretty quickly, although they tell you going in that there’s a 45 minute time limit on the experience and a 2 drink limit.

We rode the Millennium Falcon ride next. The line was 20 minutes, and it’s a pretty long queue experience. You walk through a hanger full of ships and droids, and incredible views of the Millennium Falcon parked out front. I think when SWGE opens up to the public later this month, the lines will be long in part because people will be taking pictures of the Falcon’s backside. The concept if the attraction is Ohnaka is doing some work for the Resistance and hiring a crew to take the Millennium Falcon on a mission to retrieve a power source (?). They divvy up the line into groups of 6, with 2 of each pilots, gunners, and engineers. The staging area is the room in the Millennium Falcon with the holographic alien “chess” table and you’re led into a cockpit with 6 seats. The ride itself is only about 5 minutes long, but it feels incredibly immersive, especially if you’re chosen as a pilot because you sit up front. We rode the ride altogether once, and my kiddo and I went back for another run while my wife checked out the shops. The second time around, the line was only about 15 minutes long. My youngling and I played pilot and gunner on our two rides.

I’ve got a little more to write, but I’m out of time so I’ll just leave this here.

OMG aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh

:offtopic:Kind of...anyone have an air printer for the iPad that they would recommend? I have discounted iTunes funds to use and get tired of always having to use the laptop to print to our wireless printer.

Thanks. I don't need the car at all. Just seeing if I could reduce the price by shortening the car length.
Oh ok, I see. Even though you can't, it is still cheaper than going through useaamiles, so I guess just pretend like the car isn't included.
I wonder if you could pick it up and then call the rental agency directly during your trip to extend the rental?
I did think about that, I'll have to call and see.

Anyone familiar with Lone Pine, California? Between Yosemite and Las Vegas. Will be passing by on our road trip and might be a good point to stop for the night.
Yes, we stopped there about 2 yrs ago, going from Vegas up to Mammoth Lakes (road to Yosemite was still closed for snow, early April). Stayed at the Comfort Inn - nothing fancy, but it was fine. If you have time, stop at Manzanar. It was an unexpected stop for us, but we spent several hours there. A WWII 'camp' for Japanese Americans - so much interesting history that we had no idea about!!!

Thank you, that makes total sense! BBP it is (seems like a great keeper card).

I’ve successfully done this with 2 out of the 3 payments I needed to hit MSR on my Barclays Aviator. No issues so far.

I found my bank deposits the check around 10am (both times it’s been on the exact day Plastiq estimated for delivery) so I have a reminder to pull that amount from the HELOC by 9am and it’s back to a $0 balance a bit after 10am.

I have a $4K payment scheduled for today to meet the spend on DH’s Citi Aviator but since it’s a weekend it doesn’t look like they processed the check. I’ll be pulling on Monday around 9am and hopefully the timing will work.

So far it’s the easiest (and cheapest at 1% MC promo) MSR I’ve done other than PNC bank funding.
I'm not worried about cutting it that close 😂 with a daily interest rate of .0164109% even the full $5,000 is only $0.82 per day. If I pay 3-4 days interest, I think I can swing it LOL!

Thanks! Good to know the Comfort Inn is decent. And thank you for the info on Manzanar, I’ll definitely read up and try to get there. I think there’s a movie museum in the area for all the Westerns they used to film around there as well.

Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve are good travel cards depending on your spend. I've been killing it the last 8 months with my American Express Gold Card. We spend most on restaurants and grocery stores, both 4x categories on AMEX that have gotten me enough points to fly my entire family to WDW at Thanksgiving. But I will always have a Sapphire card in my wallet for the rental car insurance and travel insurance. To me Capital One cards aren't that good when compared to Chase and/or AMEX.

Watched Rear Window tonight. I can see why people enjoy it so much. My biggest problem was the episode of Castle they based off the movie so I kept thinking of that. Of the movies I've watched so far this year I'd put it at #3 behind It Happened One Night and All the Presidents Men. Not sure what my least favorite is yet but I've watched some duds that I just don't understand why people like them. I haven't missed a week yet and will watch 2 movies the weekend before my WDW trip to cover that weekend :)

Are you looking for just 1 or 2 cards for everyday spend or are you looking to get several. The Sign up bonuses is what most of us are after, so a lot of people here will get a new card every few months, or sometimes more! There are 2 Chase Sapphire products, the Reserve (CSR) and the Preferred (CSP). The Reserve has a $450 AF which scares a lot of people away. But the first $300 in travel (airfare, hotels, tolls etc) will be automatically reimbursed leaving only $150 out of pocket. Also you will get credit for a TSA precheck or Global Entry. If you can use that then there is another $100 benefit. There is also Priority Pass lounge access at the airports. It also comes with some travel insurance benefits if you book with it. In short, the $450 fee is really not that scary once you see the benefits. The Preferred has a $95 AF and I believe it is not waived the first year like it used to be. You will probably want your DD to be an AU on one of your cards. It will be free on the CSP but would be $75 on the CSR. You will generally see more love here for Chase and Amex cards and not as much for others, such as the Capitol One. Their points UR (Chase) and MR (Amex) are generally more flexible. But it depends on what you see doing with your points.

Also, you might look into getting your DD a bank account that has fee free Atm transactions. My DD is in South Africa and she signed up for a Charles Schwab account before she left and is able to use Atms anywhere and they will reimburse the ATM fee. I am sure there are other banks that do this. Also there are links out there to sign up and get $100 for free.

I am a little surprised that you are paying directly to the University in Scotland. All of our tuition and fees were paid directly to our home University and they paid the bill. I just assumed they all worked that way.

Ok - I'm testing out this Plastiq HELOC strategy!! My wife's AA Biz showed up yesterday. Got it all registered...setup to transfer $500 on Thursday this week from my HELOC to my checking. Have a Plastiq payment for the same amount with a guaranteed delivery date of 6/18. If all works, I'll owe ~$.50 in interest and pay the $12.50 Plastiq Fee. This will also trigger some FFDs through the referral :)
It’s been working really well for me. I take an extra step and buy mc gift cards that are charged the 1%. Stop and shop had a 3x gas points so I got about $22 off in gas paid the $5.95 fee and $4.95 to Plastiq to come out ahead
