I lost my job on Friday...

Is Marketing seen as a "fluff" department? I had my own experience at the real estate developer. Then when I worked at the hospital and there was "downsizing" going on, Marketing was cut from 3 employees to 1. Eek! I love that type of work but am very hesitant about choosing it as a career now that I'm back in school. Hmmmm...what will I "settle" on this time around?

So sorry on yor job loss Elisabeth.:( Many good thoughts and prayers on finding a better job in the days ahead!:sunny:

I'm so sorry about your job. Hang in there, something better is around the corner. :D

Thank you so much for your kind words everyone. They really mean the world to me.

Pin Wizard, at some companies marketing is seen as a fluff department, whereas at others it's seen as a vital part of the company. It really just depends on the corporate culture itself. A lot of people don't understand what we do (they think that marketing is easy or that it's all "smoke and mirrors"). Also, marketing is unusual in the sense that everyone thinks they know all about it. It seems that other areas don't have that problem (for instance, everybody doesn't say they know all about accounting and try to tell the accounting dept. how to do their job). At the company that let me go, marketing isn't really seen as one or the other. They basically just don't understand that it takes more than 2 people to do the work (especially when one of the 2 people doesn't pull their fair share of the work load). I actually feel sorry for my old boss, as she will be getting dumped on now.

Elisabeth,

Did your former employer offer any job hunting assistance? An outplacement agency (paid for by your former employer) can be of tremendous assistance with important things right now, spiffing up your resume, practice interviews and in general moral support.

If they haven't, try to call them to see if its not too late to include it in your severence package.

Good luck with everything! Don't forget to smell the roses along the way on your new journey! When my DH was in a similar position 2 years ago, he took time to occasionally chaperone on field trips that DD's class went on, and they went on other little excursions while I was working. It was a special time for them. And every once in a while, my DD (now almost 10) still wishes for when dad wasn't working!

Unfortunately, no one in this situation can whip out a crystal ball and predict how the story will end...just know that it does end, and it usually ends for the better!

Again, good luck!

Sorry to hear about your job, I'm sure another will come along that you will like even better. Somehow things like that happen and I'm glad you have such a good outlook and a great family to support you. Don't be sad, try to make the best of it until your working again. Enjoy your time and do something special for you and with each family member. That should pass the time until soemthing else comes along.

{{{HUGS}}} Elisabeth. I'm sorry to hear this. I'll bet you get an even better job. I hope you find the perfect job very soon.

Elisabeth,
First off I am very sorry that you are going thru this :( Secondly, I wanted to share 2 things with you that have helped me through this stressful time in my job. (Possibility of being surplussed every 3 months) The first thing I heard strangely enough was from Tammy Faye, on The Surreal Life. It has stuck with me since I heard it. She was referencing psychics (sp?) but I liked what she said. God has a plan for everyone, and I do not need to know the plan, because being a human, I would try to think of a better one. I just thought that was so true and it has really helped me out.
The other thing I wanted to share, after keeping the above in mind is "Give it all, and let go" it is very hard to do, and I have to remind myself daily, but I try to give all my doubts and worries to God, and let them go.
The above 2 statements have really helped me out the past few weeks, and I hope they can help you too.
Thinking of you,
Amanda

I'm sorry you lost your job. It seems like they were very unfair to you. I hope you find a job that will better suit you in the very near future. It seems like they totally took advantage of you. I wouldn't worry so much about my former boss as I bet she will be just fine. One of my former bosses would always say that she would go to the mat for us and so believed in one of my co-workers complaints that if they didn't do right by her she was going to quit. Well that was over a year ago and guess who is still employed? Not my friend of course and she was done very, very wrong even after serving alot of very dedicated years to our place of employment. We were all heartsick to see her go. She was heartsick as well but it was best for her. Fast forward a year and she couldn't be happier. She said it was the best thing that could ever have happened to her, even if she was pushed out the door. I hope this works out for you as well.:D
