Been on seven cruises. Everything I've read, including this board, something somewhere from DCL, Passporter, etc.,etc.... They all said it is 1/4 of a mile around deck four on the Promenade for all the exercise nuts!

On every cruise, as part of my DCL Guilt Suppression Program(GSP), I try to walk deck four every day. Goal - 4 miles!! Quick old math - 16 laps!!! Usually lose count somewhere along the way! The only thing I do keep track of is my lap time. And everytime, when I check it, I say to myself, in the words of a famous sitcom philospher, "Holy Crap!, I'm slow!" This can't be a quarter mile!!! Must be more...someone stretched the ship!!! It was always depressing! My only hope was when I overheard some jock say to a friend that he was sure a lap was more than 1/4 mile. Only then did I stop from throwing myself overboard!!!....But still, the "official" word....1 lap = 1/4 mile.

Last cruise...on the Magic. Working my DCLGSP...Feeling depressed before I even started....AND THERE IT WAS!!!! I know it wasn't there on other cruises!!! I could have missed it, but I'm sure I would have seen it in my desperation. A Plaque!!! Right on the starboard side forward just before going into the tunnel. Don't remember if it was wood, or brass...too excited to care!!! 'Cause right there in Disney looking official print was the inscription "1 lap=.333 miles". Something about meters too, but who cares!!!! New math... 1 mile = 3laps (not 4) .... 4 miles =12 laps (not 16). I felt 20 years younger!!!!!

So the next day, when I missed my walk, I felt 25% less guilty!!!!:Pinkbounc

Glad to see it is 3=1 mile. I went farther than I thought also.

I had always thought it took four laps to make a mile, I was on lap five and saw the sign (don't know how I missed it before) so I only did one more lap and had desert!

I too noticed that plaque! LOL But it still felt like it took forever to get around it! Of course that could have just been because I was antsy to get along to other activites!

The same thing happened to us-- well, dh, I didn't exercise on the cruise. He was very upset with his running times-- wondering what he was going to do because he had gotten so slow after a few days off at WDW and he had to take his military physical readiness test right after we returned. He was so relieved when he saw the sign, and to this day still reminds me I was wrong-- 4 laps didn't equal a mile.

Oh well, he's not right very often , so I'll let him gloat.

Julie

Have to get a countdown thing for our Halloween Magic cruise!

Thank you so much for your post!!!!

:rotfl:

I have read about deck four and the lap=mile ratio. Since then, I have been contemplating of takig my running shoes....(um.....helllo?!?!?!?! You coulud get two pair of high heeled shoes for ONE pair of running shoes!!!BAGGAGE SPACE!!!!)

So, thank you. If I do decide to bring running shoes, I know if I ran 4 laps I would be thinkig "this is SOOO not worth it!" (More like half of a lap!!!!)

Anyway, it brought a smile to my face :)

I care too!!!
But actually, on the last couple of cruises I have varied my routine and I now do laps on Deck 10. I've found that it is much better for people-watching than deck 4, which makes the time go by much faster for me.

OHMIGOD, I thought it was me!

I was doing all sorts of mental justifications as to why I was so slow! ("The wind resistance on the starboard side was approximately 20 knots, slowing me down by approximately 25%")

Every day, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't do 4 laps in 16 minutes.

I got back on the treadmill at home and I was flying!

Mystery solved.

(I had asked someone (non-official) and got the 1:4 message).

So glad to hear this. I asked the walk a smile mile cm one morningand he told me 4 laps is a mile.He was just standing around encouraging people as they walked. AT home I can do 3 miles in 45 minutes and I usually do cooldown to make it an hour walk. But it took soooooo much longer on the cruise I was getting depressed. I feel better already and to think i ALMOST skipped dessert.

I remember seeing "the" plaque on the cruise last summer. I think that it said 4 laps = 1 mile. But then painted somewhere else on deck for was that 3 laps = 1 statute mile (or it may have been 4 laps = 1 statute mile and 3 laps = 1 mile).

I just did a web search on statute miles and found this:
In the US a statute mile = 1760 yards (5280 feet). Statute miles can vary from country to country.
A geographical or Nautical mile is 1 sixtieth (60th) of a degree of a great circle of the earth, or 2026.76 yards (6080.27 feet) - always! -- or it's about 15% longer than a US mile.
Here is a converter: Nautical vs. Statute Mile Converter

Just remember any walking/running while on board is better than none. Thats why I take the stairs - and it's a long climb from deck 2 to 9:goodvibes but the idea of more great desserts keeps me going:tongue:

OK, who has a pedometer they can bring with them on their next cruise? :)

Izzinmac...........did you read the real small print on the bottom of the plaque?? I know you remember me......the one with the ESPN mug welded to my hand!!! The small print said "during rough seas (like we had that Thursday....do you remember?) or for those of you who consume too much alcohol before your walk.....three laps it considered a mile due to the left and right stagger in your step. For all true health nuts it's three laps. I was told by a good source that there are cameras EVERYWHERE on the ship.......bars, resturants, pools and yes, the spa. And after viewing the tapes of everyone eat and drink for 7 days very few people qualify as "healty people". LOL Good post Bob......stick with measuring distances and not forcasting the weather..........LOL

Ok youse guys! I'm normally a mild mannered guy, but how could you doubt what I saw!!! I know what that sign said ..it was an epiphany moment for me!! No one will convince me now that a mile is anything but three laps!!

What's a pedometer??? Sounds like something the Santa Barbara police used to decide how many counts to charge against Michael Jackson!! (Sorry, Bad Joke, Bad Joke!!!- I really do know what a pedometer is)

Ron, the sign you are talking about telling the distances for staggerers and rough seas is not the one I saw. Mine was about waist high. The one you are talking about is six inches off the deck. You probably read that as you were crawling around deck four. It would have been right at eye level!!(lol)

O well.. back to dessert (or desert). Whichever!

Bob, I noticed a lot of things 6 inches from the floor those 7 days!!! Is it still 3 laps on all fours? Have you ever noticed how long the hallways look on stateroom floors? Do you know that the "plexiglass" on the verandah doesn't obstruct you view from there? LOL
