I know schools must have a dress code but this is a bit ridiculous...

I have no problem with kids wearing the sweats with team names and so on or princess on them but some have DIVA or the b word etc and I think that is why they are not allowing them at all. My guess is they are trying to be sure they don't get the ones with the profanity etc on them and if they can't have any with words it gets rid of the bad ones also. You can't have a double standard like letting them have sports or princess and not the others. It is just better to not allow any of them than deal with all the parents that will complain that some are allowed and others are not.

ok I dont like the ones across the butt either but Kaylee has the cutest pair of pants that say Love at right under the belt in the back I think those ae adorable. I guess maybe some find them offensive?? They certainly arent lowriders ( shes 6) I wouldnt allow those at any point.

As far as drawing attention to the bottom of young girls though there are still the designs on the pockets those have been around forever. Think Chic or Vanderbilt jeans even Levis. Isnt that the purpose of those designs?

Amen, sistah! Though I will say I'm surprised that the OP seems to think the dress code is unreasonable. Gee, and I thought school was for learning. When did it become about fashion?

For the record, dd's pants are not shorts. These pants are like long sweat pants with the word "princess" or "soccer" across just below the waist in the back.
While I agree that some words and types of clothing are not acceptable, I think that schools sometimes go overboard.
We have dress codes established , but there's nothing in the handbook about this specific rule.

Before our school system switched to uniforms, we had a clause in our dress code that basically stated that the principal could add to the dress code for their school as they saw fit to address "distracting" clothing and fashion choices made by the student policy.

Mskanga- I would check the handbook for that type of clause.

I have, and there's no clause. Funny thing is the same district allows high school kids to wear pants that are basically falling off their butts, you can see their boxers sticking out and that's ok, they don't come down on that.
I wish they would actually implement a uniform dress code, I would be happy with that.

That's what happened here. The clothing got so bad that the School Board basically said No more! and implemented a dress code policy for K-8, and "warned the High school if the clothes situation did not get better they would implement it there too. Well, two years later our high school have a relaxed uniform policy. K-8 wear navy blue with kahki bottom, and high school has a choice between three colors for tops three for bottoms. I love the uniform policy.

My kids get home today and the first thing the oldest one says is the principal says absolutely no pants that say anything on the rear, and no gang colors.

I think the principal is going a bit overboard this year. I will wait for my first phone call if I ever get one because I will go right down to the office with my school manual and dress code in hand.
Oh , and I still don't know what the gang colors are, so maybe I am violating some kind of rule, I don't know.

This isexactly what the previous poster suggested....the principal is enacting additional restrictions. How the heck would a school policy manuel-that was written a year or more ago-know that all of a sudden girls were wearing "words on their butts"???That is the reason for the additional restrictions.

Our city has all the kids K-12th grade in uniforms-they look great!:D

I've also seen that short pleated skirts are 'in"......can you imagine the view up the school stairs of a short skirt & thong wearing teen girl??

Easy, the handbook is revised every year , names are changed when revised, rules are revised, and every year students get the new revised handbook. This is not an old handbook, it was handed out to the students yesterday and it says 2004-2005 on it.

Let's say-for argument's sake- that this summer the "in" thing is something that is inappropriate for school but notspecifically spelled out in the policy manuel.....don't you think the principal has a right to forbid it???

My high school daughter is on cheer and part of their camp clothes was a pair of soffee shorts with the school name on the back - I think they are fine for camp and for practice - but she would never wear them to school.
My girls also have shorts that say gymnastics on the rear to wear to and from gym. They are not allowed to wear them to school, shopping, etc.

I do think that the principal is probably trying to protect himself - easier to say no words on the rear at all than to try and decide what is OK and what isn't.
ie: soccer is fine, hottie isn't

I too am a little surprised at how strongly people feel about this and how many people find them so objectionable.

I'm curious as to how everyone felt about the olympics wear that barely stayed on - you know what I'm talking about.
Some of those swimming trunks
or the beach volleyball outfits for the women

In my opinion worse than a little girl with a pair of shorts that says princess on the rear!

We saw it, and we turned the channel. Well, while the kids were up. I saw DH flip back to the volleyball a couple of times.

I can control what my kids watch on my TV, but I can't control what they see at school. Do you want my DS age 11 reading your child's butt words? I know I don't want him reading any girl's rear end!

Apples and oranges. The *uniform* for those sports are the micro-trunks or the bikinis. That *is* standard attire for those sports.

We're talking specifically about what is and what is not acceptable for school, where the stated purpose is education--not fashion. If more parents supported the purpose of the schools rather than kvetching about whether or not their kid can draw attention to her ****--well, public education might be a bit better for it. And I'm not singling out the OP, either. This seems to be a pretty pervasive attitude overall in society.

In WDW this spring I saw a 13/14 yr old girl walk past me wearing a tshirt that had 2 hand prints on the chest and underneath it said "Cant touch this" DW and I were flabbergasted.

Which is worse?

2 hand prints with "Can't touch this"

OR

2 Teddy Bears with "Are you staring at my teddies?"

Amazing what some children are allowed to wear.

I think words on the butts of sweatpants are a distraction, and should not be allowed in schools.

Mskanga, our kids' school dress code forbids ANY words, writing, letters, logos of any kind. Also, no jeans, cutoffs, tank tops. No overalls with metal buckles. No sweatpants. No shorts or skirts that are shorter than the child's middle finger when the arm is extended down the side of the leg, with the palm flat.

But I don't know what gang colors are either.

We weren't talking about what adults chose to wear. We were talking about what children, and teenagers are allowed to wear to school.
I think having princess on a toddler's behind is cute. Princess to me isn't offensive at all. But having that on a teenager's butt at school is a different matter. But why would a principal want to have to delinate between what words and on who's butt words are offensive.
I've seen Princess, Naughty, Sexy, Cute, Can't Touch This, etc on girl's behinds.
Why make the principal's job harder by arguing the point? Leave the cute or not so cute sayings at home.

At my dd's highschool, words on tops were ok, as long as it wasn't against the rules. In that case, I allowed it, as long as it passed my eyes. If I thought it would attract too much unwanted attention, she didn't wear it.
